Inspiration: Color Blocked Sandals

I’m loving the weather now. I am no longer requires me to wear pants, socks or tights so I can be bare-foot! I’ve added these pretty sandals to my wish-list. I love the color block. I’m thinking of buying a cheap pair of sandals at thrift shop, and using a scotch tape and spray paint and DIYing my own color block sandals. I also want to try this DIY neon cap toe pumps!

Inspiration: Pants Fever

If you look through my finished projects, it is pretty obvious that I love dresses and skirts. I love making them and wearing them so much, but lately I’ve been finding myself attracted to pants as well. Also, after reading this post on frosting vs cake in your wardrobe, it made me think that I have too much frosting, not enough cake! It is just more fun to make frosting, and I tend to go to thrift shops for more basic pieces of clothing. I was thrilled when I found pairs of colored jeans in lavender and burgundy, originally from Uniqulo for 700 yen (8 bucks) each! I got them from a thrift store called “Second Street”. I believe it is a chain in Japan. I’ve been wanting colored skinnies for a while. I was thinking about making clover pants from Colette Patterns (although I have to lengthen the pants as I detest cropped pants), but I bought two pants for the price I would pay for the pattern. Speaking of Colette Patterns, I absolutely adore all the new patterns they have, especially Iris! Ginger is working on the Iris pattern, and I’m excited to see the result. Another recent thrift purchase were these vintage yellow pants for 500 yen. They are high waisted and wide legged! I love them.

Here are some pretty photos that made me want to wear pants more…

Inspiration: The Hunger Games

Source 1, 2, 3, 4

Have you read/watched the Hunger Games? I read the all three books. It was first recommended to me by a friend. When I first started reading I was skeptical, thinking it would be something like a Twilight. But, after about 50 pages, I was hooked. I flew threw the books, and kept bugging Andy to read them too so we could talk about it. I loved reading about the love triangle with Katniss, Peeta and Gale. I felt like I was a teenager again!

Anyway, we recently watched the movie. The movie was terrible which was a bit disappointing but I really liked Katniss’ dress at the reaping. Pairing it with a braided up-do was really pretty. It seems easy to make with use of a blouse pattern. I’m thinking this Burda pattern with some modification to skirt would fit the bill.

I’ve been seeing a lot of double slits skirts where the slits opens up all the way to the thigh. Although this type of skirt reminds me of fundoshi a little bit, it does add an interesting (and sexy) twist to a simple maxi skirt. It also seems like a pretty easy thing to make. I’m thinking of making a simple, square shaped fabric with elastic waist in light weight fabric. Which of the above do you like the best? Would you wear it or do you think it’s too sexy to be actually wearable?

Chevron Stripes Inspiration

After making the orange and gray chevron stripes dress, it kind of got me addicted to using stripes. I checked out online for interesting way to use stripes and here is my picks! I spend way too much time on Pinterest..

Which one do you like the most? I think #2 uses the stripes in a way that is really flattering to a woman’s body.

I’m a big fan of wide legged trousers. I bought this 1970′s vintage wide legged jumpsuit from AtlasVintage two summers ago, and was surprised by how comfortable they were.

I’ve been seeing some wide legged pants made in fun prints lately, and tossing around the idea of making some myself. My biggest concern is that I will look like I just rolled out of the bed. Any thoughts?

I have this Simplicity 8009 pants pattern I might use :) Speaking of wide legged pants, I’m loving these trousers Sherry made!

Inspiration: Mystic

I haven’t done the inspiration posts for a while – not because I am not inspired but because Pinterest completes my inspiration board, and I forget about posting them here! I love Pinterest. I could spend hours on end scrawling down the pretty photos.

While I was out today, I picked up a catalog by a Japanese label, named mystic. It’s really cute, and I thought I’d share, so I scanned some of my favorite pages from the catalog.

Any sewing/wardrobe plans for the Spring? My brain is full with pretty pastels and color blocking with them..sky blue + lime, purple + emerald, pink + mint…<3

P.S. I’m running a 48 hour sale on my shop! Use coupon code “SALE48″ for 20 percent off. I’ve moved my shop to Big Cartel!

Inspiration: New Sewing Books

These are the sewing books that I recently acquired. I read them before bedtime …

First the book in the middle of the above picture is “Cool Couture” by Kenneth D. King. I bought this book recently. After taking the bombshell dress course at Craftsy, I became interested in couture techniques and how to incorporate them in ready-to-wear garments. I forgot who recommended me this book, but I think Kenneth King is pretty famous. The book has a step by step instructions on some couture techniques from piping to different pocket installation. Although the book has plenty of illustrations and pictures, I personally need to follow it while I make a sample, or else  I would forget the process. One of my dreams is to take a sewing class by Kenneth King and Susan Khalji in NY (or Baltimore maybe). I’ve read Gertie took her course, and taking her course has become one of my sewing life goals! It is quite expensive (I think it is about 900 dollars for 5 days), but would be a great way to invest money.

The book “Fitting You Figure” is a collection of articles by vintage Threads magazines. Marina from Frabjous Couture (excellent blog btw, and she guest blogs at BurdaStyle too) kindly sent it to me since I won her giveaway :) I’ve just started reading the book, and it is great. As with the Kenneth King book, I will need to try the techniques with my hands to really acquire the skills, but it is really interesting to read through the articles.

The last book in Japanese is from a local library. I visit there every other week and pick up several books to read at night. This book is titled “How to be a fashion designer“. I just started reading it last night, it gives a brief history of several designers, including Junko Koshino. While reading their stories, it dawned on me that success does not come over night. These famous designers have years of sewing, pattern making, designing experience.  They all patiently wait until their break comes. They have years of waiting time, where they learned the industry, leveled up their skills and so on. Watching Project Runway, sometimes it looks like success comes to you over night, but for most successful people, it does not. I was really encouraged by it:) If I were to become a famous designer tomorrow, I would not be prepared to take the success and would blow the opportunity. I don’t have the necessary skills or knowledge yet. So much more to learn!

Lastly, I found that this etsy shop, Isabel’s Patterns is having a 50% sale on vintage patterns! I picked up 4 new patterns today. They are a boy’s shirt, men’s robe, high waisted wide legged pants and a night gown patterns. I can’t wait to receive them! Check out her store – She has more than 400 vintage patterns, and they are really cheap!

The collaboration Forever 21 did with Hello Kitty is so cute! I thought the cat eye make up, blunt bangs and the bow made everything super cute.

I came across these backstage photos of Meadham Kirchhoff’s SS 2012 show in London at Rookie, and went through the entire 66 photo collection with great curiosity. As someone who designs and sews clothes, I am always curious how the other designers/seamstresses create their collections. I like the mountain of inspirational images that they collected, and the fashion drawings. I wish I could draw better!
