34 weeks – trick on wearing non-maternity clothes

March 10, 2011 By Chie

Hi all! Remember I mentioned that Andy and I went thrifting in Shimokitazawa last Saturday? This is the skirt I scored for $6. Satomi’s post about color evaluation (her blog is in Japanese) got me thinking about the color I use to create my wardrobe. According to her, she went to a therapist where she was told what color best  best suits an individual depending on their facial features, skin tones, hair color etc. I do not have money to blow on the therapy session, but I revisited my closet to find out that my wardrobe consists of…mostly black, gray, purple and blue. I do not have anything orange, or yellow. Orange and yellow are not my favorite colors, but I felt like a such a boring person wearing purple all the time. As for yellow, I’m consciously avoiding to wear yellow, since I feel like it matches with my skin tone too much. But perhaps I can go for different shades of yellow, such as lemon or mustard? Anyway, so when I found this bright orange skirt with yellow and teal tulip print on it for $6, I had to jump on it!

A problem I soon discovered was the waist size. It measures out as 66cm. There is no way that I fit in this skirt comfortably being 34 weeks pregnant! Although, on a side note a 66cm waist is the measurement I want to get back to after the delivery.

After some more deliberation I decided to wear it as a dress. My trick is to make a loop with an elastic band, and attach it to the skirt using safety pin. I threw on a cardigan to hide the opening part in the back. I felt like I’m wearing a moo moo with just that, so I added a belt under bust. Now I have a baby doll style dress:)

And, last but not least for today’s post.  My darling friend Kaitlyn sent me the precious clothes! I can’t wait to dress up my babe with these clothes!

Those colors look beautiful on you! I almost always tend to wear darker neutrals too (perhaps that stems from always wearing navy blue/black for my work uniforms and from growing up in the fire service) but I do aspire to not wear so many dark colors. Great idea wearing the skirt as a dress and belting it, it is so cute!

its funny that many people has patterns of what they like to wear! i don't own neutrals much, but thats something i want to try more often in the future!

You look gorgeous. Orange definitely suits you. Great idea on the safety pin.
I've been trying to expand my color palette a little bit too. In college I was all over the place. I tried to narrow it down to colors that look good on me but I over shot and now my wardrobe is just full of gray, brown, purple and teal.

That color looks really good on you. It looks like it would be cheerful and energizing to wear!

Another alternative for turning a skirt into a dress is this:

    http://www.burdastyle.com/blog/sewing-with-singer-and-the-martha-stewart-show-reviving-vintage-garments-with-the-girls-from-some-odd-rubies

I saw it on Burda a while back but haven't tried it yet. It looks really easy though!

Hi Chie! Your solution for wearing this skirt is brilliant! Wearing long skirts as tube dresses is such a nifty way of remixing a wardrobe 🙂

I gravitate towards the same colors, too: black, gray, white, navy, burgundy. It's my goal this year to expand my color palette.

    Take care of yourself! -janelle

Certainly adds a lot more dimension to a wardrobe if you can wear one piece in several different ways. Thanks for sharing.

Hope you and your family are okay.

Such a really good discussion you all have happening .These are clothes which are mostly liked by the youth and have that carefree attitude about them. These sorts of clothes are not only liked by youngsters but also by elderly a growing bump you obviously need a dress that provide comfort and go well with your bump. A maternity jean is a necessity nowadays for those precious nine months when a woman carries her child in her womb. Seraphim maternity jeans have brought to you an extra bundle of joy. Thanks for sharing with us.

That is such a great idea! Maternity clothes are a waste of money and your closet space afterwards. Hope the rest of your pregnancy goes smoothly. 🙂

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Released. Reimagined.

It took quite a bit of wandering to find this venue. Tucked just off a quiet side street from Harajuku’s Takeshita Exit — full glass frontage, light pouring in. The moment I stepped inside, I knew🌱

Right at the entrance, @brownie_shots will be running a pop-up☕︎ The central space becomes our runway. VIP seating going in now.

Less than one week to go. Fingers crossed for sunshine ☀️

この季節のそのギャップが、なんか好き♡

深みのある金茶とテラコッタ。
春の光に当てると、
秋色が美しく見える気がします✨

朝晩の肌寒さには、シルクの羽織りがちょうどいい。

It’s May — and yet, fall hues🍂

Warm enough to break a sweat by noon,
then a cool breeze sneaks in by evening🌬️

I kind of love that about this time of year♡

Rich amber and terracotta.
Something about spring light makes these autumn tones look even more beautiful✨

For those cool mornings and evenings,
a silk haori is just right.
