Mommy’s Diary: Learning to Talk

March 5, 2013 By Chie

mommy's diary20130304kiko1

Kiko has been really picking up language, it is so much fun to watch! While we were in the U.S. for two weeks in February, she learned so many new words, like “snack”, “all done”, “donut” (you can tell what the grandparents had been giving her on my absence) or “elephant”. Andy and I both speak to her in English at home, but still I was amazed how much she picked up within a few days we were there. It made me think maybe I wasn’t talking to her enough at home. She received a constant shower of language from her grandparents, and other extended family, and I saw the effect of that first hand!

Sometimes it is a challenge to figure out what she is talking about. For instance, she kept saying “bider” but I had no idea what she meant, until I figured out that she meant to say “spider”, and wanted to do itsy bitsy spider together. 20130304kiko220130304kiko3DSC_0128 copy

Also, she pronounces the “si” sounds like a Japanese person, and here is a little video clip of what she ended up with. She is trying to say “sit”; I think she learnt it from me asking her to sit down everyday. Hope you have a chuckle out of it:)

Hi Chie! When we were in the Philippines for a month holiday, my children pick up our local language so easily as well. And everyone was a bit surprised. Children are like sponges especially like that age of Kiko. My children are bilingual- speaks both Polish & English but what was so amazing when they try to utter new language so easily. And we’re also trying to be careful in using words especially when at home like cursing words…hehehe! for i had experienced with my daughter at age 3, she utter some cursing words like S****t and by then we’re too careful. Kudos for Kiko’s progress. She’s such a lovely little girl and i luv her curly hair. Where she got her curls? for you have so straight hair.

    Regards!

Hi Ai, it is amazing how a child picks up language! I wish my brain is as flexible as hers. I have no idea where Kiko’s curly hair came from. Andy has a strait hair, and I have a kind of straight, but coarse, frizzy hair, but not curly!

oh my!! she sounds so much more different than i had imagined! she always look so exuberant and outgoing in the pictures, i was so expecting her to have a super loud voice! but she sounds so cute and soft 😀 what a cutie pie!

Aw that’s funny that you though Kiko would be louder! She can be loud when she gets excited though:) I don’t know why she is whispering in this video! Hope your girl is doing well<3
