How to Make Spaghetti Straps

November 16, 2017 By Chie

youtube video how to make spaghetti strapsIn my 10 years of garment sewing, this is the first dress I made in true red. I was requested this particular dress from a photographer who is planning a fall shoot in Showa Kinen park this week. He is hoping to use the dress to catch the colors of changing leaves. I don’t know if I will have an occassion to wear such a dress myself, but it was fun to make! The bodice is made out of satin and the skirt has wrinkled chiffon layers on top of half circle satin skirt. Chiffon layers are actually streamers as opposed to one connected skirt, so it should be fun to play around with them for the photos. red dress long handmade red showstopper dresssewing red carpet dress try onI made Spaghetti straps to go criss cross at the back, and took a short video clip of how to make them. I’ve made them many times and this method which uses a cord might be the easiest. You sew a strap fabric folded (right side in) with a cord inside, and utilize the cord to turn the strap inside out. My trick is to sew the top and bottom openings a bit wider than actual strap width, so the turning goes smoother. You can cut off the wide parts later so the whole strap is the even width.

Watch the video for the details here.

Sewing BurdaStyle Coat 116 Part 2

November 9, 2017 By Chie

burdastyle sewing tutorial coat 116

Sew with me BurdaStyle coat 08/2016 #116!

In this video part 2(part 1 here), I continued sewing the pockets and lining, added a decorative detail to lining neckline, which was not included in the pattern instructions, and finally tried on!

Sewing Summary:

Pattern:  BurdaStyle Trench Coat 08/2016 116

Fabric: Wool, viscose, nylon mix light gray fabric from Nippori Tomato (similar here)

Sewing time: About 5 hours

Modifications: 1. narrowed the sleeves, 2. shorten the sleeve hem by 2cm, 3. added a contrasting color trim around neckline of lining, 4. shorten the coat length by 5cm.

Fit: It is loose fitting. I prefer a bit more snug fitting around arms.

Difficulty: Relatively easy; good beginner coat sewing pattern.

Make Again?: Probably not, because I want to try a different coat pattern (maybe Mint Trench Coat?) but I’m glad I made this one.

In this video, part 1, I talk about my fabric choice and also give a step-by-step breakdown for sewing the outer coat up until the attachment of the facing.

About BurdaStyle coat 116:
“This multi-faceted classic includes a full-length shawl collar and deep set-in sleeves. It is a great choice for every closet. The open front comes together with the tying belt that allows it to be worn close to the body, loosely drawn or fully open.”

Hope you’ll like the video and are encouraged to sew your own!

Something I've been building since 2008 — taking k Something I've been building since 2008 — taking kimono fabric, fabric that already holds someone's memory, and giving it a new life.

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Thank you to everyone who came🤍

Released. Reimagined.

It took quite a bit of wandering to find this venue. Tucked just off a quiet side street from Harajuku’s Takeshita Exit — full glass frontage, light pouring in. The moment I stepped inside, I knew🌱

Right at the entrance, @brownie_shots will be running a pop-up☕︎ The central space becomes our runway. VIP seating going in now.

Less than one week to go. Fingers crossed for sunshine ☀️

It’s May — and yet, fall hues🍂

Warm enough to break a sweat by noon,
then a cool breeze sneaks in by evening🌬️

I kind of love that about this time of year♡

Rich amber and terracotta.
Something about spring light makes these autumn tones look even more beautiful✨

For those cool mornings and evenings,
a silk haori is just right.
