Mommy’s Diary 16 – Busan Photo Diary

August 11, 2011 By Chie

Here are some photos from Busan, Korea! I brought my DSLR with me, but ended up not taking any photos with it. I love my camera, but it’s so chunky and heavy, and I had so much other baby stuff to carry..so all these photos were taken with my iPhone.

Looking back on the trip, most photos are food photos. I love Korean food, and Andy’s aunt made sure that we ate a lot..

Above photos are “Korean traditional course meal” as Andy’s aunt described it. For 45 straight minutes the restaurant staff brought  endless different dishes and we were super stuffed by the end.

After that meal, we ended up going to a cafe for coffee and desert. While in Busan I kept seeing this thing (left bottom picture). It was what looked like a huge piece of toast with gobs of whipped cream on top. Is that a Korean thing? I’ve never seen that in Japan or the States! We were trying to be good but the next morning, we could not help trying it! It was delicious. I plan on imitating that some morning..it seems super easy, just toast a huge piece of bread, put butter, caramel or chocolate syrup and whipped cream on top of it and eat. The simple pleasures in life!

We took a stroll in the morning near beach.

Here are some shots of hotel we stayed. It was facing the beach, but it was a bit too cold to get in the water.

Next day, we went to a place called Nampodong. It is a shopping area, full of small shops next to each other. It was a bit hard to move around with a stroller. I found some fabric and notions shops. I usually like to buy some fabric whenever I travel to a new place, but I could not find anything uniquely Korean there.. so I ended up buying some invisible zippers! (boring). They were signfiantly cheaper than the ones in Japan though.

Andy ran out of clean underwear during the trip, so he picked some up. Much to his chagrin, Korean male underwear as it turned out, does  not have a pee hole cut out in the front?!  So I asked the sales lady why that’s the case, and she said Korean guys don’t like that the fabric flops open when they sit, so that is why there was no hole. So strange!

The onigiri (rice balls) pictured above was our sad dinner when it poured outside, as mentioned in previous posts we had a war with Kiko and could not go out for dinner. We picked those onigiri up at the 7-11 that was conveniently located downstairs of our hotel.

The last day we went to Lotte department store in downtown Busan. It was very nice, there was a musical water fountain thing going on, and we had some supersized Cold Stone ice cream!

Already looking forward to our next vacation 🙂

    Hi, Chie
It’s nice to see your korea trip photos. It makes me feel home sick.especially many Korean food photos. I love love that one rice cake in red spicy sauce(we call tuck- pok-ki). I never ever can find in Switzerland where i’m living in.
I’m not fom Busan but love to go there. many cute stuffs and nice places to go.
I went to Busan with my hubby and kids too. Luckily my family has a holiday house there and they helped us to stay comfortably.
I understand it’s not that easy to travel with little baby. But you seem did very well.
I went to Osaka and Tokyo when my first son was 2 year old. well… Tokyo wasn’t easy place travel with baby too. We couldn’t go out to eat dinner so we brought Onigiri to room too. I had to laugh when i read your Onigiri story. You can believe me. It will be getting better and better to travel with kid. You shouldn’t stop to bring baby out. She needs to practice too.

LOL at the underwear thing! Maybe it was just at that store? Cuz my husband definitely has some that do have the openings…
Do you know any Korean or did you just get around with English?

hi hana! yea the underwear thing was so weird! my husband bought a couple of pairs not knowing that there were no holes, and i kept seeing the very tight underwear for men at stores. so i asked andy’s aunt, who speaks korean to ask the store clerk why. no i dont speak any korean! :p

This silk is so light, perfect for the hot season 🫠

I made these wide-leg pants from a kimono✂️ The thin silk lets the breeze through, and the hem sways softly with every step ♪

The back is made from what used to be the kimono sleeves, so the floral pattern on the hips ends up upside down👻 I wasn’t sure at first, but honestly it grew on me, so I left it as is 🫶🏻

One of a kind, just this one pair. If you’re curious, the link is in my profile ♡

Reimagined.」

Reimagined.」

Helen x Vivat Veritas

A silk dress I made a few years ago.

For this ""Released. Reimagined."" concept, I asked @redyeingproject to dye it black.

This collaboration grew out of a connection made when he joined the Helen x Vivat Veritas event as a vendor.

""Before you throw it away, consider black dyeing.""
His concept — reviving faded clothes through by-the-gram redyeing — really resonated with me.

The silk skirt, a natural fiber, transformed into a deep, beautiful black.
The chantilly lace took on a subtly greenish tone.

A small choice, in service of wearing one piece for longer.
Take a look at the before/after photos🩷🖤

If you wore this to a café, you'd definitely stand out 😆☕

A new form of fashion, born from upcycling. A coffee bean sack jacket × a kimono-remake set-up.

Every single piece is finished entirely by hand, from matching the fabric patterns to the sewing itself 🪡🧚 Actually, this kimono has a different fabric worked into the lining too — there's a color that only reveals itself once you put it on ♡

I wanted to give the stories sleeping in vintage materials a chance to become part of someone's everyday life again.

Honestly, I wasn't sure whether to include this piece in this show. It was something I'd made a while back. But talking it through with Helen, we decided to show it together after all.

Working with Helen for almost three weeks to prepare for the show, I learned so much — how to build a collection, how to style looks that engage an audience, how to put together a look as a whole. I don't think I would have made the decision to include this piece if I'd been on my own. Creating something together with someone else really opens your eyes to things you wouldn't see alone.

thank you Helen @designerhelen♡

A precious obi entrusted to me by a client.

I often hear people say they aren't sure how to incorporate their cherished obis into their daily lives. That is exactly why I focus on reading the story woven into the fabric and reimagining it into a design that fits modern living😌

There are hidden details that make this bag truly functional, even if you can't see them at first glance. By attaching the shoulder strap, it becomes the perfect hands-free bag for an active lifestyle👜

The lining of a kimono — often discarded when the fabric is remade into something new.
That soft, lightweight silk felt too good to let go, so I turned it into a summer dress. It needed something more, so I asked artist Riko Monma to dye it for me — and suddenly it came alive again.

I made this piece a few years ago, but for the recent event with @designerhelena, I decided to bring it into the collection. Helen gave me so much guidance on color — combinations I never would have arrived at on my own. The whole preparation process was just really, really fun😌
