Recently I had the chance to work with a wonderful photographer team for a bridal shoot. The inspiration behind the shoot is a whimsical wedding in the woods, a long flowy dress with delicate lace and open back.
I love both lace and open back designs, so I jumped at the opportunity. I first searched for some”chemical lace” (this is the name in Japanese but not sure if it is the same in English). I bought a fair amount (have to show you my collection sometime!), laid them all out on the cutting board, and began to mix and match different combinations in a attempt to see what would work. I really wanted the dress to have a unique back, and after deciding trying many different combinations, I was finally able to decide on a lace combination that helped accent the look. It looks like a butterfly is perched on your back or angel’s wings.
From there, I worked on the rest of the dress. I layered the lace fabric with white satin to make the bodice and skirt. The skirt is flowy and slightly A-lined. I kept the rest of the dress very simple as I wanted the design focus to be on the back.
I’ve made a few wedding dresses in the past (This post has detailed process of making the dress, if you are interested), and I really enjoy being surrounded by white delicate fabrics and the fulfillment of completing one big project.
