Sewing the Pink Coat:: Completed!

February 27, 2014 By Chie

pink coat completed by vivat veritas

As I blogged here and here, I was making myself BurdaStyle Wool Long Coat 08/2012#101B this year. Finally the coat is completed! Actually I was done about a month or two ago..Just did not have a chance to take pictures and blog. I am very pleased with this coat. I’ve warn it many times, and it has helped me survived this winter which was unusually cold for Tokyo.

I love:
– the boxy men’s wear inspired silhouette
– it covers my body down to my knees, and is double breasted front style which keeps me warm
– the pink color! It is easier for people to find me in a crowd of gray and black coats
– silk lining. It is very warm and luxurious. It was worth the money for the fabric!

I am not so crazy about:
– the sleeve insertion. Can you see the wrinkle around the armhole in my back view picture above?
– the shoulder width of the coat patterns. They were very wide, and I had to take in about 5 inches! Next time I sew this coat, I would do a narrow shoulder adjustment before I start sewing.

Overall, I am happy with the result. I bought three meters of this wool fabric, and used two meters for the coat. I also made a coat for Kiko with the rest of the fabric. Kiko’s coat is done, I just need to take pictures! It is super cute, I can’t wait to show it here.

Wow … it is a beautiful coat!! … the contrast between the men’s wear cut and the pink color (oh so very feminine) it’s what makes it quite glamorous. If there is something going on with the sleeve insertion … can be easily overlooked when considering the whole. 🙂

Thank you Sasha! I was really obsessed with men’s wear inspired coat this year. I kept pinning different colored version of them on pinterest! I am happy that I was able to get one for myself with the fraction of the price you would pay at the store.

wow such a lovely coat!!! some women are bag women, others shoe women, i’m definitely a coat/jacket woman! i love, love fabulous outerwear. menswear-inspired and vintage coats are also my weakness. so you can just imagine my excitement when i saw this…and it’s pink! not my favorite colour but the colour of the season! i’m a sewing novice and now i just wish i can already sew as well as you do because i definitely want to make one for myself! i wonder though how it would’ve looked like a little oversized (with a wider shoulder width, as originally designed in burda) a la céline, rochas or carven? i love how it turned out though with the fitted shoulders, just the way you envisioned it. great job, fabulous coat! 😉

Hi Tiza, I think I am in the bag woman category! If I were to invest money on something, it is certainly bags for me.

The original pattern does have a wide shoulder. They seem that way in the Burda pictures too. I’m not so crazy about exaggerated shoulders…I’m happy that I took in shoulder width for mine:)

Super duper awesome pink coat!! You done an amazing job executing the pattern! How do you find time doing all this sewing with your busy schedule? I can’t seem to find a time in between work, night class and taking care of a dog name Bento =)

Hi Susan, I love your dog’s name! Bento means lunch box in Japanese:)
I made the coat in about two weeks, just a little bit of work each day. I find 20-30 minutes of sewing time much more productive that 3 straight hours. For some reasons, my concentration does not last that long.
Also keeping the sewing space organized is the key! That way, I can get right down to sewing, instead of searching around my tools and fabrics:)

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Released. Reimagined.

It took quite a bit of wandering to find this venue. Tucked just off a quiet side street from Harajuku’s Takeshita Exit — full glass frontage, light pouring in. The moment I stepped inside, I knew🌱

Right at the entrance, @brownie_shots will be running a pop-up☕︎ The central space becomes our runway. VIP seating going in now.

Less than one week to go. Fingers crossed for sunshine ☀️

この季節のそのギャップが、なんか好き♡

深みのある金茶とテラコッタ。
春の光に当てると、
秋色が美しく見える気がします✨

朝晩の肌寒さには、シルクの羽織りがちょうどいい。

It’s May — and yet, fall hues🍂

Warm enough to break a sweat by noon,
then a cool breeze sneaks in by evening🌬️

I kind of love that about this time of year♡

Rich amber and terracotta.
Something about spring light makes these autumn tones look even more beautiful✨

For those cool mornings and evenings,
a silk haori is just right.
