Silk Painting

June 22, 2013 By Chie

trying my hands on silk paintingI have new crafting goal, I’m trying – silk painting. It all started when a customer asked for a silk wedding dress with a floral motif. I looked for fabric that is silk and has an asymmetrical floral motif on it, but was unable to find any. However while I searched, I found out about silk painting. I decided to make a dress in white silk and paint a floral motif on it.

Silk painting can be done on silk that is stretched on some frame, like an embroidery hoop, using silk painting paints. It started in China, but is more popular in the U.S. and Europe, not so widely seen in Japan. There are a lot of supplies available in U.S. sites, and Dharma Trading is one of them. I was going to buy supplies from Dharma, but the shipping cost was high. So I went on to search Japanese sites that have silk painting supplies available. So far, I only found one: Yume Gazai (ゆめ画材).

There are a few essential materials you need for silk painting: silk paints (I bought SetaSilk, which is a water-based, non-toxic thin paint), Gutta (A resist is a substance that halts the spreading of dye or paint as an outline, or preserves the original color of the fabric in a shape or design), lightening medium (as you can’t use water to thin the color since it may fade), a frame to stretch silk, and brushes. I use an embroidery hoop to stretch silk, and watercolor brushes. As a starter, I bought a clear color gutta. stretching silk

I am going to eventually purchase silk fabric to paint on, but for right now, I wanted to test on cheap fabric. I used off-white color 100% polyester satin. Above is a picture showing how I’m stretching the fabric.guttaThen, using gutta, I drew the outer shape of the flower motifs. This is to avoid leaking of the silk paint; since the paint is like watercolor and spreads on the fabric canvas so quickly, if you want a clear line, you use gutta to stop it from leaking. It will take me a while to get use to using gutta. The gutta tube does not let me draw a very fine, thin lines. As you can see above, the line is quite thick and it will not work for the project I have in mind. Also, gutta took forever to dry. silk painting material3 silk painting material2 silk painting materialAfter that, painting is just like drawing with watercolor. You can mix the color and just paint. It will take a bit of practice to figure out how much the paint bleeds.

After finishing the paint, I let it completely dry for 24 hours and then iron to set the color. I set the iron in low-heat setting and iron the fabric in a circular motion. I hand-washed the fabric in cold water to see if the color fades, but it was ok! Not that I will wash silk fabric, it is good to know that the color is intact even after washing. silk painting finished result copyAbove, you can see the motifs drawn using gutta and without gutta. I personally like it without gutta as the lines drawn with gutta look distracting. But at the same time, it might be hard to have bright colors without gutta. What do you all think? ChieSignature

Soen Competition…Submitted

June 19, 2013 By Chie

transition submission cover letterI wrote in the beginning of the year 2013 that my goal of this year was to practice sketching and submit my design to the design contest in Japan, Soen competition (装苑賞). The deadline was in mid May and I am proud to say that I accomplished my goal. This was my first formal design competition submission, and I learned a lot though the process. I had the theme “transition” in mind – I wanted to express the transition woman goes through from the life change, from becoming a mother, having different roles in life (wife, friend, mother, worker) and returning to workforce after such an dramatic change in personal life. I also wanted to incorporate French Renaissance influence as well as I thought French Renaissance was a big transitional period in History in art, literature and so on. Although I liked my theme, I don’t think I was able to express it well enough, mostly due to the lack of time. I finished all my sketch the day before the due date and express mailed the package to the examiners. I did not mean to do it so last minute, but it kept pushed back because of other VV work and life. This was my first try, so I hope to have something better put-together the next time.

Catherine Martin & Miuccia Prada Dress Gatsby

June 16, 2013 By Chie

great gatsbyHave you seen the new Great Gatsby movie with Leonard DiCaprio? They just started showing the movie on Friday, 6/14 in Japan and to celebrate the movie premire, Prada Aoyama is running an exhibition of costumes that Miuccia Prada provided for the movie.

I had a chance to stop by last Friday. It was my first time stepping into the Prada store in Aoyama. The store is gorgeous! The entire building from first to eighth floors are full of shoes, bags and clothes. The exhibition is held on seventh and eighth floor. If you like 1920’s fashion, you will enjoy seeing the expanded poster images of flapper dresses. There were also some real clothes displays through out the other floors such as jewel headbands and flapper dress made out of jems.

The exhibition will be held through 6/30/2013 in Prada Aoyama, right off the Omotesando station, A5 exit.

It’s a cute cafe where you can try different samples of unique stationary!bunbogu cafe foodChieSignature{find me elsewhere: shop, facebook, etsy, twitter, pinterest}

こんな軽やかな羽織りモノ。

気温差が激しい今の季節に
シルクの調湿性は最高の味方です。

We’re officially in that ""three days cold, four days warm"" cycle🌸 A light layer like this is a total lifesaver right now🧥✨

The best part? It’s silk. With these crazy temperature swings, silk’s natural breathability is basically a superpower—keeping you cool when the sun’s out and cozy when the breeze hits.

Stay comfortable, stay cute🤍

ずっと続けている着物リメイクですが、最近はオーガンジーなど他の生地をミックスするのがマイブーム。 「着物ってこんなに自由でいいんだ!」という驚きと可能性を、一着一着に詰め込んでいます。

While kimono upcycling has been my journey for a long time, I’ve recently been obsessed with blending traditional fabrics with other textures like organza. I’m exploring the idea that kimono can be more fluid and free, bringing that sense of possibility into each design.
