Mommy’s Diary 17 – I’m Loosing My Hair!

August 18, 2011 By Chie

It has been four months since Kiko came into my life. The time has gone so, so quickly!

But, enough reminiscing, on to the topic at hand. I’ve heard that a woman can lose a significant amount of hair 2-3 months after giving birth. Apparently, this is because of some hormonal change. One of my friends told me that she lost her hair like a shedding dog. I heard about it, but wasn’t really believing it until now. I assumed it would not be a problem for me, because I have (or had) hair which is super thick hair so losing some would actually be good for me. I was wrong! I’m losing so much hair, it’s crazy! When I wash my hair, the drain gets clogged with hair. I sweep the floor every morning because I see my hair all over the place! And sadly, I found a bald spot on the front side of my forehead.

Look (see arrow).

So to hide my bald spot, I cut my bangs a bit shorter than usual and let it hang. I prefer to have long bangs, so long it almost mixes with my back hair. That way I can put all my hair up when I put it in a bun. It helps to combat the heat and humidity in Japan Summer. But my bald spot kept growing so I had no choice but to cut my bangs.

I’m also trying not to put my hair on pony tail or bun too much so it’s not always pulling the hair thereby making the balding process worse. As a result I did some hair experimentation and I came up with this braided hair style that does the job of looking o.k. and hiding the baldness! I really like the result! It is similar to Milk Maid braids, but it takes less time in my opinion. I get this done in less than two minutes and it perfectly hides my bald spot 🙂

1. Braid your hair from the top of your hair all the way to the end. Secure the end with a small elastic band.
2. Bring the braid all the way to the top of your head like a head band. Using pins of your hair color, secure the braid around your head.
3. Wear a headband to hide the end of the braid 🙂

Shimokita Date

August 16, 2011 By Chie

With the internet, the world is so small. Since I started documenting my sewing in this blog, I’ve had several opportunities to meet with people whom I’ve first had contact with online. The experience of meeting someone you know for the first time feels so surreal but fun! Last week, I met up with Sophia from Iro Iro Crafts, her friend Reina, and Zhing. (Zhing has the cutest little dog which she likes to dress up as Sushi!) Sophia was visiting Japan from the U.K. and we all went to Shimokitazawa for a coffee and desert and thrift shopping! It was so fun! Sophia is young, creative and talented..I sure wasn’t like her when I was 17…:p She wrote a guest post here on a detachable crochet lace collar.

For our little meet-up, I think Shimokitazawa was a perfect place. The place is filled with cute cafes, restaurants, zakka shops and thrift stores, and it’s not overwhelming like Shinjuku or Shibuya. We had cake and ice coffee (that day was soo hot and humid!), then headed to some thrift shops. We stopped by at one of my favorite shops, 3 biki no koneko (“three little kittens” in Japanese). I like the shop because it has a 630 yen rack. By good fortune, when we went there, they were having a sale and the rack had a reduced price of 315 Yen! I picked up a white pleated skirt for 315 yen 🙂

The lining of a kimono — often discarded when the fabric is remade into something new.
That soft, lightweight silk felt too good to let go, so I turned it into a summer dress. It needed something more, so I asked artist Riko Monma to dye it for me — and suddenly it came alive again.

I made this piece a few years ago, but for the recent event with @designerhelena, I decided to bring it into the collection. Helen gave me so much guidance on color — combinations I never would have arrived at on my own. The whole preparation process was just really, really fun😌

Made from a coffee sack sourced from @allpress_espresso.

Cafés do Brasil — the stamp from its days carrying beans stays right there on the back.

Kimono fabric has always been at the heart of what I do, but I want to bring in more materials with a history — things that have traveled, carried weight, meant something before they became a garment.

A butterfly doesn’t transform alone.

Someone sews, and a shape is born.
Someone paints, and light finds a face.
Someone adorns, and a story stirs beside the ear.

Each gesture layered upon the next —
until one garment spreads its wings on the runway🦋

Before the doors opened, there was this. Garments Before the doors opened, there was this.

Garments waiting on the rack. Brushes in hand. Quiet conversations in corners. The unhurried moment before everything becomes a show.

""Released. Reimagined."" with @designerhelen was made possible by so many generous hands — our makeup and hair team, our models, every person who showed up early and stayed late. Thank you for caring for these pieces, and for each other, the way you did.

More to come🤍

Reimagined."" は、たくさんの方々の手によって生まれました。 メイク・ヘアチームのみなさん、モデルのみなさん、早くから駆けつけて最後まで残ってくれたすべての方へ。 本当にありがとうございました。
次回も頑張ります🤍

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Released. Reimagined.
