New York photo diary & meeting BurdaStyle people!

December 8, 2010 By Chie

I took a trip to NY in early November to see my husband’s family and my friends from Philly. I got to spend 3 days in NY, and it was a lot of fun!

Walked around Soho, had lunch at Thai place, had a super mini cupcakes (this adorable shop is located across the street from forever21 in Union Square), went to a fabric district in NY with tons of beautiful notions, trims, fabrics..had a change to visit the famous Mood fabrics. It was like a sewer’s heaven there! I bet I can find any fabric I want at Mood. It was a bit pricey and I did not have any particular garment project in mind, so I ended up coming out of the store, empty handed. But I really enjoyed walking around between the rows of beautiful fabrics.

Also had a chance to visit BurdaStyle office:) It was really nice to finally meet people behind this amazing website. The last picture is me, with Rachel and David. They are wearing the handmade headbands I brought over as a small gift<3

Using scraps and making pretty little things

December 6, 2010 By Chie

Here are some small things I made using scraps and left over yarns.

This bunny ear (or bow) headband is very easy to make and actually quite comfortable to wear. I get headaches from headbands depending on what kind, but this one, you can adjust the tightness with the wire inside. You only need 33inches long fabric. I used a left over fabric from a dress I made before.

Blue Bow headband

I found this crochet lace while I was in Philly in November. I bought 10 yards of it since it was so pretty!

Cream Crochet Lace Headband

These two headbands below were made from a left over yarn I used for the fingerless gloves.
I simply did a couple rows of single crochet and decorated with scalloped hem for Beige Crochet Wide Headband.
I made 3 single crochet ropes, braided them and attached elastic bands in the back to make the Beige Crochet Braided Headband below.
My first attempt to make turban! I saw turbans all over the fashion blogs lately. It is very very simple to make. Just make sure to use stretchy fabric, and the variation is endless!

Black and white stripes turban

P.S. Thank you sooo much for all the comments, advise, and encouragement to my 20 weeks post. I’m sorry I came off so negative and whiny. I swear I’m not like that everyday!
I read all the comments and love reading them. Sorry for not responding individually. I’ll write more for 21 weeks post. Thank you!! xoxo

20 weeks – best & worst things about being pregnant

December 3, 2010 By Chie

20 weeks! I’m a bit late on this week’s post, but I’m happy that I’m at the half way point of my pregnancy. It went so quick, and I feel as though the second half will go quicker. I can’t believe I will be holding a baby in less than 5 months!

This week I received a package from my father-in-law in the States, a package full of baby goods:) Blankets, clothes, “I love grandpa” bib..etc. It was so sweet! I can’t wait to decorate the nursery with them. I felt bad though, because the shipping fee was very expensive ($50!).

I’ve been feeling the baby’s kicks every day this week. This has been the best part of my pregnancy so far! I love feeling the baby move. When I first started feeling the move, it felt as though I was keeping a small gold fish in my belly. Now that the baby got bigger, if feels more like I have an eel in my belly..I know, it’s not a lovely image, but I feel that way!

Before I started to feel the move, I often worried whether I was really pregnant. I had no morning sickness, and things really didn’t change much for the first couple of months in my pregnancy, so I sometimes forgot that I was pregnant. I like that the baby reminds me that I’m pregnant now by his kicks!

I don’t want to be completely negative here, but I will be honest, the worst part of my pregnancy is the changing body image. I didn’t expect to receive so many comments from people about how I look once I got pregnant, and I wasn’t ready for it. Just so you know, I’m not talking about comments left on my blog, rather, comments from people in real life. I don’t mind people telling me my belly has grown. But I’ve also received some comments about my thighs and butts getting bigger, I’m too big for 5 months, or too small for 5 months. And I try not to worry or care about it much, but it’s hard not too. I just wonder why people can’t keep their comments to themselves…

Not only some people around me, but also some nurses at the hospital I go to like to bust my balls. I love and hate going to the hospital at the same time. I love because I get to see the baby with ultrasound, but I hate it because nurse comes around to check and comment on how I’m doing with weight gain. According to her, I’m only allowed to gain 8kg through out the pregnancy, because if I gain more than 8kg, the baby will hard time coming out because of the fat or something. And last time, she nagged me for gaining too much already. Well, I gained 2 kg at 4 months point, which I didn’t think it was terrible. But the weight they measured at the hospital weighted 1-2 kg heavier because of clothes and I just had a lunch. I tried to explain that to her, but she told me to measure my weight correctly (I guess with clothes on?!) and I should not gain any more until the next visit. I felt very sad, because regardless of what I actually weighted, she made me feel big, fat and ugly… I also felt terrible because I felt as though I’m more concerned about myself than the baby’s well-being.

I know everyone experiences different pregnancy, and my experience is vastly different from my friend’s, who had a baby 6 months ago. Also, I wanted to make sure to write that this might be uniquely Japanese experience, and I think I would have experienced the pregnancy in much different way if I were still in the U.S.
It seems to me that the weight gain is stricter here, and I’ve read in some website that pregnant women going on a severe diet because the doctors tell them not to gain much weight.

Anyway, if you are pregnant now or if you had experienced pregnancy in the past, what is/was the best/worst part?

去年の夏の3週間、アメリカとヨーロッパを旅しながら、座席でひたすらチクチク🪡着物の裏地にキルト芯を挟んで、フリーハンドで刺し子して、日本に帰ってから染めました。

This jacket was made on airplanes and trains✈️🚆

Over three weeks last summer, traveling through the US and Europe, I stitched away in my seat🪡
Kimono lining sandwiched with quilt batting, sashiko stitched freehand, then dyed after I got back to Japan.

The lining of a kimono — often discarded when the fabric is remade into something new.
That soft, lightweight silk felt too good to let go, so I turned it into a summer dress. It needed something more, so I asked artist Riko Monma to dye it for me — and suddenly it came alive again.

I made this piece a few years ago, but for the recent event with @designerhelena, I decided to bring it into the collection. Helen gave me so much guidance on color — combinations I never would have arrived at on my own. The whole preparation process was just really, really fun😌

Made from a coffee sack sourced from @allpress_espresso.

Cafés do Brasil — the stamp from its days carrying beans stays right there on the back.

Kimono fabric has always been at the heart of what I do, but I want to bring in more materials with a history — things that have traveled, carried weight, meant something before they became a garment.

A butterfly doesn’t transform alone.

Someone sews, and a shape is born.
Someone paints, and light finds a face.
Someone adorns, and a story stirs beside the ear.

Each gesture layered upon the next —

Before the doors opened, there was this. Garments Before the doors opened, there was this.

Garments waiting on the rack. Brushes in hand. Quiet conversations in corners. The unhurried moment before everything becomes a show.

""Released. Reimagined."" with @designerhelen was made possible by so many generous hands — our makeup and hair team, our models, every person who showed up early and stayed late. Thank you for caring for these pieces, and for each other, the way you did.

More to come🤍

扉が開く前の、静かな時間。

ハンガーに並ぶ作品たち。メイクブラシの音。片隅でかわされる小さな会話。 すべてがショーになる前の、穏やかな瞬間。

@designerhelen との“Released. Reimagined."" は、たくさんの方々の手によって生まれました。 メイク・ヘアチームのみなさん、モデルのみなさん、早くから駆けつけて最後まで残ってくれたすべての方へ。 本当にありがとうございました。
次回も頑張ります🤍
