Bridal Photoshoot with Tuli

February 26, 2016 By Chie

bridal photo in hamarikyuI teamed up with jewelry designer, Megan of Tuli for a recent bridal shoot. Megan is an American, who lives in Japan. She was in Uganda as a journalist for a while, and developed a relationship with local ladies and trained them to make beads out of paper. I enjoy working with brands with strong mission statement. Check out more about her story and jewelry here. We shot with this dress and this dress.

Besides Megan, we had French, Filipino, and Peruvian girls who gathered as make up artists, hair stylists, and a model to contribute to this shoot. It’s fun to meet with people from different countries who happen to find their way to Tokyo.

Usually I leave Kiko when I do photoshoot, but I could not find the childcare on that particular day. So, we biked to Hamarikyu park in Tsukiji together. I was surprised how much Kiko was into this whole photoshoot experience; she was talking to all the girls, helping the stylist, taking many photos (some of the below photos were taken by her and edited by me), and just overall having a great time. She was so proud of herself for being a “big help” and I was, too! Flowers at Hamarikyu Park1 Portrait by my daughter Flowers at Hamarikyu Park2 Flowers at Hamarikyu Park3 Flowers at Hamarikyu Park6Although it was still cold, you could see pretty flowers started to bloom. my little photoshoot helperBehind the scenes of the shoot with Kiko helping the stylist.

Kuala Lumpur Photo Diary

February 16, 2016 By Chie

kuala lumpur photo diary - vivat veritasFollowing my last post about the National Textile Museum in Kuala Lumpur, here are the rest of the photos from my trip. It was a short three day trip, but it was the perfect length to get a sense of the city. Had I stayed longer, I would have explored the outskirts, maybe a place like Malacca. We found an airbnb place in towntown for $50 per night. The location was fantastic; walking distant to all the shopping malls and restaurants in Bukit Bingtang. As much as I enjoy staying in a hotel, airbnb helps me stay slim since I can prepare my own food without the temptation of breakfast buffet. The place was great and came with pool and gym. We intended to use the gym everyday but never did. But, we walked a lot! Hopefully that counts.

There is something mind renewing about a trip like this even if it was short. We walked aimlessly for hours on end. When do you have a chance to walk around for the sake of walking around in your daily life? I am too busy getting from A to B when I’m in Tokyo. The thought of going for a walk does not even occur to me. So mindlessly walking around, talking, stopping for coffee cleared my mind and by the end of the trip, I was ready to dive into the regular work again.airbnb KL bedroom airbnb KL living room airbnb malaysia pool gym 23 hour cafe chinese new year decorationWe went right before the Chinese New Year. National Textile Museum, Kuala Lumpur

National Textile Museum in Malaysia via Vivat Veritas Blog

Andy and I took a 3 day trip to Kuala Lampur, Malaysia. The trip was great; I thoroughly enjoyed the heat and sun light as it is cold and gray here in Tokyo. One of the unexpected highlight of the trip was the visit to the National Textile Museum. It is located near China Town in a mosque-like building that we happened to bump into. Here is a short description of what the museum is about from the National Textile Museum’s website:

“National Textile Museum takes you explore the rich diversity of Malaysian society. The museum is to track trends and developments that characterize textile and develop community living in Malaysia since the pre-history to the present. Visitors can visit the gallery that displays a collection of four leading textiles, accessories and clothing. Multimedia presentation also highlighted the textile production techniques in Malaysia.”

And the admission was free! The two-story museum has many interesting exhibitions from batik, weaving to gold thread embellishment, but what I enjoyed the most is the collection of embroidery. It is amazing to think that they are all done by hand, one stitch by stitch. exhibition at national textile museum in malaysia3 exhibition at national textile museum in malaysia4 national textile museum in malaysia building{Beautiful mosque building now used as a museum.}National textile museum building Colorfule textiles1 Colorfule textiles2 Colorfule textiles3 Colorfule textiles4 Embroidery exhibition at national textile museum{Intricate embroidery work – can’t imagine the hours spent on this jacket.}

@allpress_espresso のコーヒーバッグで作りました☕️ Cafés do Bras @allpress_espresso のコーヒーバッグで作りました☕️

Cafés do Brasil

Made from a coffee sack sourced from @allpress_espresso.

Cafés do Brasil — the stamp from its days carrying beans stays right there on the back.

Kimono fabric has always been at the heart of what I do, but I want to bring in more materials with a history — things that have traveled, carried weight, meant something before they became a garment.

Materials: coffee sack × kimono silk

A butterfly doesn’t transform alone.

Someone sews, and a shape is born.
Someone paints, and light finds a face.
Someone adorns, and a story stirs beside the ear.

Each gesture layered upon the next —
until one garment spreads its wings on the runway🦋

To everyone who was part of this show 💌

Before the doors opened, there was this. Garments Before the doors opened, there was this.

Garments waiting on the rack. Brushes in hand. Quiet conversations in corners. The unhurried moment before everything becomes a show.

""Released. Reimagined."" with @designerhelen was made possible by so many generous hands — our makeup and hair team, our models, every person who showed up early and stayed late. Thank you for caring for these pieces, and for each other, the way you did.

More to come🤍

Reimagined."" は、たくさんの方々の手によって生まれました。 メイク・ヘアチームのみなさん、モデルのみなさん、早くから駆けつけて最後まで残ってくれたすべての方へ。 本当にありがとうございました。
次回も頑張ります🤍

From a chaotic atelier to the runway.

Before a collection comes to life, there are floors buried under fabric, pattern pieces, and countless hours of trial and error.

A heartfelt thank you to the incredible models who breathed life into each look, and to every member of the team who made it all possible 💝

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Released. Reimagined.

It took quite a bit of wandering to find this venue. Tucked just off a quiet side street from Harajuku’s Takeshita Exit — full glass frontage, light pouring in. The moment I stepped inside, I knew🌱

Right at the entrance, @brownie_shots will be running a pop-up☕︎ The central space becomes our runway. VIP seating going in now.

Less than one week to go. Fingers crossed for sunshine ☀️

It’s May — and yet, fall hues🍂

Warm enough to break a sweat by noon,
then a cool breeze sneaks in by evening🌬️

I kind of love that about this time of year♡

Rich amber and terracotta.
Something about spring light makes these autumn tones look even more beautiful✨

For those cool mornings and evenings,
a silk haori is just right.
