Last Week

November 14, 2011 By Chie

Sorry for the lack of posts last week! You saw my husband, Andy helped me out with posts last week:p I’m so glad to be back and have time to relax a bit now. I did no sewing last week.

Last week had a few few highlights, here they are: 1. Received my newest sewing book in the mail: Cool Couture by Kenneth D. King! 2. Went out on a date with Andy, and found this set of toothbrushes. 3. Tried on fuzzy ear muffs at 390 shop in Machida. 4. The weather is getting chilly and it makes me want to drink hot green tea. 5. Found my page in BurdaStyle book at Maruzen bookstore in Tokyo! 6. Also found this adorable craft book (I’m sorry I don’t remember the title). I must make this for Kiko! too cute. 7. & 8. Ate at the restaurant Kurosawa. It was named after the Japanese movie director, Akira Kurosawa. Delicious! 9. Did a wedding dress photo shoot and my sister came to help me out. She is so adorable…love her! :p

Mommy’s Diary 29 (Daddy’s Diary 4)

November 10, 2011 By Chie

Ladies, you are getting more than you probably wanted from me this week. Fear not Chie will be back soon! Chie asked me to write this daddy’s diary on the significance behind Kiko’s life verse Romans 12:2.
For those unfamiliar with the verse here it is “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

As I thought about the birth of my first child and what impression I want to leave on her I thought long and hard. The scriptures are life and it is hard to  localize one focal point but after thought and prayer I ended on this verses. Here’s why;

First, this verse assumes a certain knowledge of the Lord. As parents raising our children Chie and I will look to raise Kiko “in” the knowledge of the Lord not “to” a  knowledge of the Lord. What I mean by this is, Lord willing there will never be a time when my daughter does not have intimate knowledge of her God and Father and a relationship with Jesus Christ. From infancy I pray she understand her place as a daughter of Christ. If the Lord so allows she will always be one who is a follower and will be one who does not need instruction to come to the Lord but will be one who needs instruction on how to live as a follower. This verse is sent to someone inside the family. It is instruction for a highly prized child just as I pray Kiko will be. She is a child set apart for the Lord who the Lord through the Scriptures will continually teach on how to live as the daughter she truly is.

Secondly, this verse says all of what I want her to know about this life. If for some reason I do not live to see her grow in this life, I can be sure this verse will well represent what I would have tried to teach her. She being a daughter in a Christian family will have  certain privileges in the kingdom. Being a daughter in the family will also come with certain requirements and duties. Being a daughter of the Kingdom will also mean that she must always be separate and never hold too tightly to this world which is passing away. She is to be transformed day by day moment by moment by the knowledge of the perfection of Christ. She is to discern the truth from the lies of this world and to know God through meditation on perfection. If this verse can be applied and lived, my hope and desire for my daughter will have been realized. Kiko is not first and foremost my daughter, she is first and foremost the daughter of the most high and it is as that which I must raise her. I must raise her to look beyond me. It is as the daughter of Christ that she must live.

Thirdly, this verse comes in a chapter from which I plan to give all my future children a life verse from. In having all my children vested in Romans 12 I hope to give them a unique family experience a unique corporate understanding to their Christian walk. Certainly my children will walk as individual Christians with personal devotion to the Lord but, beyond  that  I pray they see themselves as part of a family which is  set apart unto the Lord. As they can see themselves within a family of believers hopefully Kiko and the future children can understand themselves as part of something  even larger than that, I pray they begin to fully realize their position in Christ beyond merely the “I”. They are a part of the body and this body spans time, race, gender, it connects fellow members to their Lord in ways beyond description and does so for eternity.
Lastly, I see this verse as a promise. It is a promise that what is of the Lord, what is of Christ is perfection and has power to transform. It has power to give life and to give it abundantly. That perfection when gazed upon, when meditated upon can deliver what I as her earthly father never can, what no earthly entity ever can. It is a promise that we are destined to perfection and that holding on to that perfection here and now will give life beyond which I can possibly understand.
Kiko, as your father, I lift you up, I entrust that you will not be conformed to this world but rather you will be transformed and will know, you will see you will understand perfection and know that the perfection of Him is a perfection that you are called to embody here and now through the guidance and sanctification of the Spirit.

Inspiration: Erin Fetherston’s Spring Presentation

November 9, 2011 By Chie

These photos from Erin Fetherston’s Spring Presentation is stunning! I love everything about it, from the butterfly pants to white sheer lace blouse.

By the way, thank you so much for your comments on my yesterday’s post about the BurdaStyle book! You might have seen this if you follow me through facebook, but while I was in Tokyo today, I stopped by at the bookstore called Maruzen. There, I saw the BurdaStyle book!! I was super excited! It felt so surreal to see my name on the print like that. I did not buy the book because it was more expensive to buy it at the store in JP yen, but I was standing there for good 10 minutes, going through the pages. It’s a really fun book, not only because I am in it, but with all different sewing projects you can get your hands on!!

Last but not least, here are some few things that has inspired me from blogsphere this week:

1. The tutorial on how to make the photos look dreamy (via Ruche)
2. Lovely DIY tutorial on how to add lace to the knit cardigan! (via Strawberry Koi)
3. How to turn photo into a text (via Ruche)
4. DIY hat stand (via Here’s looking at me kid)
5. Photoshop tutorial: how to get perfect skin in seconds (via Ruche)

Reimagined.」

Reimagined.」

Helen x Vivat Veritas

A silk dress I made a few years ago.

For this ""Released. Reimagined."" concept, I asked @redyeingproject to dye it black.

This collaboration grew out of a connection made when he joined the Helen x Vivat Veritas event as a vendor.

""Before you throw it away, consider black dyeing.""
His concept — reviving faded clothes through by-the-gram redyeing — really resonated with me.

The silk skirt, a natural fiber, transformed into a deep, beautiful black.
The chantilly lace took on a subtly greenish tone.

A small choice, in service of wearing one piece for longer.
Take a look at the before/after photos🩷🖤

If you wore this to a café, you'd definitely stand out 😆☕

A new form of fashion, born from upcycling. A coffee bean sack jacket × a kimono-remake set-up.

Every single piece is finished entirely by hand, from matching the fabric patterns to the sewing itself 🪡🧚 Actually, this kimono has a different fabric worked into the lining too — there's a color that only reveals itself once you put it on ♡

I wanted to give the stories sleeping in vintage materials a chance to become part of someone's everyday life again.

Honestly, I wasn't sure whether to include this piece in this show. It was something I'd made a while back. But talking it through with Helen, we decided to show it together after all.

Working with Helen for almost three weeks to prepare for the show, I learned so much — how to build a collection, how to style looks that engage an audience, how to put together a look as a whole. I don't think I would have made the decision to include this piece if I'd been on my own. Creating something together with someone else really opens your eyes to things you wouldn't see alone.

thank you Helen @designerhelen♡

A precious obi entrusted to me by a client.

I often hear people say they aren't sure how to incorporate their cherished obis into their daily lives. That is exactly why I focus on reading the story woven into the fabric and reimagining it into a design that fits modern living😌

There are hidden details that make this bag truly functional, even if you can't see them at first glance. By attaching the shoulder strap, it becomes the perfect hands-free bag for an active lifestyle👜

The lining of a kimono — often discarded when the fabric is remade into something new.
That soft, lightweight silk felt too good to let go, so I turned it into a summer dress. It needed something more, so I asked artist Riko Monma to dye it for me — and suddenly it came alive again.

I made this piece a few years ago, but for the recent event with @designerhelena, I decided to bring it into the collection. Helen gave me so much guidance on color — combinations I never would have arrived at on my own. The whole preparation process was just really, really fun😌
