Sparkly Costume for J-Pop Singers

March 24, 2016 By Chie

sparkly costume for jpop singers by Vivat VeritasLast year, I was asked to make the costumes for two J-pop singers’ re-debut. The group was originally made up of six girls, but they reduced the number to two. To celebrate the re-grouping, they performed at a live house in new outfits. I don’t have a much experience in sewing costumes save making myself a Halloween costume a few years ago. From that one experience, I learned that you have to use “costumy fabrics” in order to have the costumes stand out in a crowd or on the stage. The design that the singer’s PR company presented was relatively simple without extravagant decorations or a massive amount of boning. I’m thinking I could even use the same pattern and make a wearable romper for myself in the summer. I further refined the design and suggested the main fabric to be sequined paired with cape of all white fur.
j pop costume sketchHere is my sketch for the costumes. cape muslin for costumeAbove is the cape muslin. I drafted the pattern based on this pin. Then I made the cape with white fur and lined it with satin. The process required a surgical mask and vacuum cleaner…it created so much fuzz and mess! Every time I made a cut, I had to use the vacuum cleaner to remove the excess hair. I used velvet ribbon to tie in the center and added the straps on shoulder so the singers can use it to keep the cape in place while dancing. white fur cape and sparkly romper inside fur cape copy close up of romper costume fur cape inside the costumeBra cups are catch stitched inside. Underneath the sequined skirt, there is a white shorts attached. The sequined fabric almost destroyed my good scissors… I recommend using old pair or cheap ones when you have to cut sequins. sparkly rompers for j pop singers昨年末、某J-POPアイドルのコスチューム作りをお手伝いさせていただきました。

Modern Princess Aurora Dress

March 12, 2016 By Chie

princess aurora dress with modern twistSewing for my four-year-old is fun. It has become much more fun than when she was a baby. She has ideas, opinions and wants to collaborate with me to make her own special garment (What I made for her in the past here).  Right now she is into anything princess related so when we were invited to a wedding back in November, we decided to make a “Princess Aurora dress”. Her requests were pink, long and fluffly like this. As I wrote here, she does not consider it a “dress” unless it reaches the floor. My idea was to use up some left over fabrics and give it a modern twist. I follow the instagram of NY based kids fashion brand, 3Claps and I got the idea of sheer top panels from there. It adds a bit of modern taste without being too much like from a Disney movie. No pattern is used; I took her chest, waist and top and skirt length measurements and made paper patterns from them. I like how easy it is to draft kids clothes pattern since no darts are needed for upper body. Princess aurora dress handmade Princess aurora dressPink kids dress with sheer panelBoth Kiko and I were happy with the finished dress, buuut I made a crucial mistake. Can you see the nicely finished french seam on shoulder outside? This is what happens when I work at night in dim light. I placed the finished top panel inside out. Oh well it’s for a child and she will grow out of it quick.

She loves the dress and even post wedding, she wears it on the weekends. Next project for her is to sew up a knit dress with the panda bear jersey I scored for 200 yen per meter in Tomato!

MADE | Transitional Piece

March 1, 2016 By Chie

what i made - beige wrap dressWinter is my least favorite season. Not only do I hate being cold, but also fashion wise, I get sick of multiple layers. Usually I end up wearing jeans and a Uniqlo sweater.  So boring! But…..I had a chance to get to Nippori last weekend and that gave me some sewjo to make myself something fun to wear. After going through piles of knits on the second floor of Tomato fabric store, I ended up with this beige knit. It is medium to thick knit made out of 80% of rayon. The rest of the fabric content is a mixture of polyester and polyurethane, so the knit does not go too stretchy after some washes. The wrong side of the fabric is flannelized to keep it warm and it feels good against the skin.beige dress full bodyThe pattern was from a store bought dress I had. I did not do anything special except for lengthening the sleeves. I sewed the front neckline with an elastic so that the neckline would not get stretched. The whole thing is serged and the hem was done by hand. This way the hem sewing line is invisible. Sewing was simple and in total it took less than two hours to make.beige wrap dress back style - beige wrap dress

It fits pretty well, though I could do without some creases in the back. But, at the same time, I did not want the dress to be skin tight like one of those f21 dresses that college kids wear to clubs…
When Kiko saw me wearing the dress, she said “mommy, new dress?! But it is too small for you!”. In her mind a  “dress” needs to be long and fluffy like some kind of Disney princess. beige layersI’m planning on wearing with cardigan, long boots (from Zara) and plaid scarf for now. Once the weather warms up, I want to pair it with white sneakers and leather jacket. main_20160301_tiered_launch

Last but not least, my favorite online shop, Shopbop is running a spring sale from 3/1-3/5. Check out here.

chie sig2

A precious obi entrusted to me by a client.

I often hear people say they aren't sure how to incorporate their cherished obis into their daily lives. That is exactly why I focus on reading the story woven into the fabric and reimagining it into a design that fits modern living😌

There are hidden details that make this bag truly functional, even if you can't see them at first glance. By attaching the shoulder strap, it becomes the perfect hands-free bag for an active lifestyle👜

The lining of a kimono — often discarded when the fabric is remade into something new.
That soft, lightweight silk felt too good to let go, so I turned it into a summer dress. It needed something more, so I asked artist Riko Monma to dye it for me — and suddenly it came alive again.

I made this piece a few years ago, but for the recent event with @designerhelena, I decided to bring it into the collection. Helen gave me so much guidance on color — combinations I never would have arrived at on my own. The whole preparation process was just really, really fun😌

@allpress_espresso のコーヒーバッグで作りました☕️ Cafés do Bras @allpress_espresso のコーヒーバッグで作りました☕️

Cafés do Brasil

Made from a coffee sack sourced from @allpress_espresso.

Cafés do Brasil — the stamp from its days carrying beans stays right there on the back.

Kimono fabric has always been at the heart of what I do, but I want to bring in more materials with a history — things that have traveled, carried weight, meant something before they became a garment.

Before the doors opened, there was this. Garments Before the doors opened, there was this.

Garments waiting on the rack. Brushes in hand. Quiet conversations in corners. The unhurried moment before everything becomes a show.

""Released. Reimagined."" with @designerhelen was made possible by so many generous hands — our makeup and hair team, our models, every person who showed up early and stayed late. Thank you for caring for these pieces, and for each other, the way you did.

More to come🤍

Reimagined.""
