Random Things I Made | August 2015

August 24, 2015 By Chie

what i made summer 2015 sewing

Besides the swimsuits and kimono dresses, I did a fair amount of sewing this Summer. These small projects don’t deserve an entire blog post but I thought it might be fun to show all the random sewing stuff together.

1. Antique lace + silk camisoleAntique lace and silk

2. Bridal off-the-shoulder lace top for Vivat Veritas Bridalwhite tops

3. Bow for bridal sashvivat veritas bow sash

4. Bunch of fall/winter wool dressesfall dress fall dressesfall 2015 dresses

5. Denim skirt. I drafted the patterns myself too! denim skirt

6. Alice in Wonderland print skirt. The pattern is the same as the denim skirt.

7. Red camisole. I ended up removing the sleeves. It might look OK in the pictures, but they felt so awkward when worn.red cropped top vivat veritas

That’s it! I’m leaving for the U.S. (NY and Philly) in September for a few weeks. Andy thought I was crazy when I signed up for a private bra sewing session with Madalynne,  “more sewing?!” He asked.

What have you made this Summer?

Summer 2015 Swimsuits

August 19, 2015 By Chie

Hot Pink and White Cheeky Bikini Bottom via Vivat Veritas Blog copy

I never understood why swimwear is so expensive (look at this price tag!) since it uses small amounts of fabric. With one meter of fabric, you can probably make 3-5 bikini bottoms, depending on the fabric width and size of the bottom. I had some credit card points to burn and so decided to buy 30cm of this hot pink polyurethane fabric to make this bikini bottom.

I used no pattern; just traced the shape out of my other store-bought swimsuits and adjusted a little. One major modification I made was to add this stretched elastic line in the center back. It is so easy to do and it definitely helps your butt look more cheeky than it actually is.

Here is how:
1. Measure the length of center back.
2. Cut the elastic band (I used 1cm width elastic) in the half of the length you measure in #1.
3. Sew the elastic in the center back of your bottom as you stretch the elastic.

I didn’t use a special lining for this. Just cut two pieces of front and two pieces of back, serge together and hem the side. Sewing swimsuit fabric is not difficult as long as you have the right thread. I used resilon thread. Didn’t even bothered to change my needle but it is better to use ballpoint needle for knits. Bathing suit sewing

Here are some bikini tops and Brazilian style bottoms I recently made for a customer. I don’t have a place or courage to wear those bottoms… but someone will?!

Before & After | Maternity Dress to Peplum Top

August 14, 2015 By Chie

DIY Peplum Top (click through for pictures)

Most of you know how much I like quick refashioning – it is a great way to update your wardrobe without putting in much effort. I still like making clothes from scratch but I can’t deny the instant gratification that quick DIY projects provide.

Here is another “old” piece my friend gave me. It was never worn and it is from Max Mara! I’m sure it cost 3-500 dollars. She said it was too potato sack-y for her and I kind of agree that the shape is rather unflattering. Initially my thought was to make a skater dress like this, but I quickly realized that I didn’t have enough fabric. It’s hard to gauge how much fabric I have when it is in an already constructed clothes form. So I had to change the plan mid way and turn it into a peplum top. Considering how much wear I’m getting from this peplum top, I didn’t mind the change of plan 🙂

I forgot that stripes (especially wide stripes) require more fabric…sigh. I made this little peak-a-boo cutout in the back not really on purpose but because of the lack of fabric. But I think it turned out ok!

Meisen — the kimono fabric that swept through fashion among young women in 1912 to the early 1930s.

A plain-weave silk textured with a kasuri (ikat) technique, prized for its light, breezy feel and its bold colors and daring patterns.

That soft, blurred-edge quality comes together with vivid, fearless color combinations 🌈

The signature blur comes from weaving the warp and weft threads slightly offset from one another.

This fabric was born from women’s desire to wear something entirely their own — it carries their spirit of freedom in every thread. Keeping that same boldness intact, I’ve remade it into a cropped camisole and wrap pants that drape and move with you — a piece that fits naturally into everyday life today🧚

From tradition, into everyday life.

One obi, carefully unstitched and reborn as a one-shoulder bag for daily wear🌸

It holds far more than it looks — scissors, thread, a seam ripper, pliers… all my sewing tools tucked neatly inside✂️✨ Though I’m probably the only one who’d pack it like this😆

The lining inside is a little secret I’m quite fond of♡

Furisode — the long-sleeved kimono young women tra Furisode — the long-sleeved kimono young women traditionally wear once in their lives, for their Coming of Age Day ceremony (Seijin Shiki) at 20 — often gets worn just that one time. I actually wore my cousin’s furisode for mine, so hers got a second life. But most don’t. They live for one single day, then disappear into the back of a drawer, unseen for decades 😴

But beautiful silk doesn’t have to end there.
From a once-in-a-lifetime ceremonial robe to something you can wear again and again. This piece — butterflies mid-flight, flowers in bloom — deserved a new season. So I remade it into an i line dress.

This silk is so light, perfect for the hot season 🫠

I made these wide-leg pants from a kimono✂️ The thin silk lets the breeze through, and the hem sways softly with every step ♪

The back is made from what used to be the kimono sleeves, so the floral pattern on the hips ends up upside down👻 I wasn’t sure at first, but honestly it grew on me, so I left it as is 🫶🏻

One of a kind, just this one pair. If you’re curious, the link is in my profile ♡

Reimagined.」

Reimagined.」

Helen x Vivat Veritas

A silk dress I made a few years ago.

For this ""Released. Reimagined."" concept, I asked @redyeingproject to dye it black.

This collaboration grew out of a connection made when he joined the Helen x Vivat Veritas event as a vendor.

""Before you throw it away, consider black dyeing.""
His concept — reviving faded clothes through by-the-gram redyeing — really resonated with me.

The silk skirt, a natural fiber, transformed into a deep, beautiful black.
The chantilly lace took on a subtly greenish tone.

A small choice, in service of wearing one piece for longer.
Take a look at the before/after photos🩷🖤

Honestly, I wasn't sure whether to include this piece in this show. It was something I'd made a while back. But talking it through with Helen, we decided to show it together after all.

Working with Helen for almost three weeks to prepare for the show, I learned so much — how to build a collection, how to style looks that engage an audience, how to put together a look as a whole. I don't think I would have made the decision to include this piece if I'd been on my own. Creating something together with someone else really opens your eyes to things you wouldn't see alone.

thank you Helen @designerhelen♡
