Bow Tie Dress from Girls’ Clothes by Fu-Ko basics

July 20, 2015 By Chie

Polkadot Dress from Japanese Sewing Book

Our local library has many great sewing books. Kiko and I go there once a week since they have a story telling program for little kids. While she is in the program, I wander around the sewing and crafting section and usually end up taking out one or two sewing books.

My recent sewing project for Kiko came from  the book, “Heart Warming Life Series: Girls’ Clothes by Fu-Ko basics” by Mayumi Minowa (Japanese title

I made Bow Tie Dress in size 120. Japanese kids clothing size goes 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120… and they point to the kids’ height in centimeters. Kiko is little over 110cm right now, but I made it in a bigger size so she can get the most wear out of it.

The fabric is cotton with pink dots. I bought the fabric back in 2012 and made curtains for her nursery. It looked cute in the room but it did not cut out the light so later on I bought light shielding curtain which cuts the outside light completely. It comes handy for naps when she used to take one or summer nights when the outside is still bright at 7pm. Since we no longer need the polkadot curtains, I recycled it to make the bow tie dresses.

I love making clothes for her at night and surprise her in the morning. It’s like a mini Christmas. I hang the new clothes in her room while she is asleep and she finds it when she gets up. I was convinced that she would love this dress. It’s 1)dress, 2)pink and 3)bow tie. What more can a girl dream for?

Contrary to my expectation, I did not get a good reaction out of her. She did not like it at all and told me I can give it to her friend! I was furious. I thought about giving it away so she can’t wear it but she kept insisting that I should give away, so I thought maybe I should demand that she wears it even though she does not like it to teach her to appreciate things that she is given. I think she got my point.

If you sew for your children, do you get a reaction “I don’t like this”? When that happens how do you react?

Watson Bra in Black and White Dots

July 16, 2015 By Chie

Dot Print Watson Bra A32 via Vivat Veritas Blog

Soon after I made my first Watson Bra by Cloth Habit, I found left over fabric in my closet that had been used to make this dress (now on sale for $20!) back in 2013. I still had a meter or so left. It has stretch, and there are apples hiding among the black dots. Since I already had the notions and power net in black I decided to make another bra.

As before, I added bra pads and lined the cups with power netting. for my previous attempt, I enclosed the pads completely. However, this time I left a small opening so I would be able to take the pads in and out. After a number of washes, the pads can get old. This way I can replace them easily.

My second try went much quicker. I really had fun making it. I usually listen to podcasts while I sew, and my current sewing/crafting podcast favorite is Elise Gets Crafty.

Pattern: Watson bra pattern from Cloth Habit
Size: 32A
Fabric: Stretch poly mix fabric from Nippori Tomato
Notions: Flora’s Garden on etsy
Modifications: Added bra pad and lined the bra cups with power net.How I added a bra pad on Watson Bra (Click through for more)

So what’s next? I’m continuing to collect inspirational images for bra here. Lacey back, burgandy lace for fall, white racerback… Variations are endless. I’ll soon be back to stretch knit section in Nippori.

Botanical Flower Wedding Photo Shoot

Bridal Photoshoot Behind the Scenes (click through for more)

I follow Once Wed obsessively and share their posts on my weekly wedding inspiration posts on the VV facebook page. I saw this post on Botanical Wedding Flower Inspiration followed by DIY Wedding Arch and thought this was definitely going to be incorporated in my next photoshoot idea. I shared the idea with a photographer Mr. Nishihara (he has shot so many of my lookbooks, few examples here and here) and he brought this backdrop that looks very much similar to the one they used in Once Wed. The problem was how to find the branches. I stopped in a flower shop called Aoyama Flowers and found some cool branches but they cost 1600 yen (about 15 USD) each. I would have needed at least 4 branches to make it look like something substantial in the background and it was more than I wanted to pay. The shoot day was rainy and windy. As I walked from the station to the photo studio, I found some broken branches on the street, waiting for me to pick up. I pinned the branches to the backdrop with safty pins and voila! Botanical wedding backdrop was ready:)

The photographer is Nobuyuki Nishihara, model is Mio Shigematsu, make up by Ayumi Hanaki.

The dress was made with leftover fabric from this boho wedding dress I made for a customer.  The skirt is made out of soft chiffon with sweep length train, and the off the shoulder sleeves completes the bohemian bride look.

I’m wearing my Grainline Archer shirt dress here.

A precious obi entrusted to me by a client.

I often hear people say they aren't sure how to incorporate their cherished obis into their daily lives. That is exactly why I focus on reading the story woven into the fabric and reimagining it into a design that fits modern living😌

There are hidden details that make this bag truly functional, even if you can't see them at first glance. By attaching the shoulder strap, it becomes the perfect hands-free bag for an active lifestyle👜

The lining of a kimono — often discarded when the fabric is remade into something new.
That soft, lightweight silk felt too good to let go, so I turned it into a summer dress. It needed something more, so I asked artist Riko Monma to dye it for me — and suddenly it came alive again.

I made this piece a few years ago, but for the recent event with @designerhelena, I decided to bring it into the collection. Helen gave me so much guidance on color — combinations I never would have arrived at on my own. The whole preparation process was just really, really fun😌

Cafés do Brasil — the stamp from its days carrying beans stays right there on the back.

Kimono fabric has always been at the heart of what I do, but I want to bring in more materials with a history — things that have traveled, carried weight, meant something before they became a garment.

Before the doors opened, there was this. Garments Before the doors opened, there was this.

Garments waiting on the rack. Brushes in hand. Quiet conversations in corners. The unhurried moment before everything becomes a show.

""Released. Reimagined."" with @designerhelen was made possible by so many generous hands — our makeup and hair team, our models, every person who showed up early and stayed late. Thank you for caring for these pieces, and for each other, the way you did.

More to come🤍

Reimagined."" は、たくさんの方々の手によって生まれました。 メイク・ヘアチームのみなさん、モデルのみなさん、早くから駆けつけて最後まで残ってくれたすべての方へ。 本当にありがとうございました。
次回も頑張ります🤍
