MADE | Handmade Daisy Flower Baby Dress

February 10, 2015 By Chie

daisy flower baby girl dress by vivat veritas1I wrote here that it seems as though everyone around me is having a baby, and here is another handmade gift that I made for a baby girl who was just born. I love making handmade gifts for baby girls as it reminds me of when Kiko was young. Also, it is the only time in your life to be ridiculously pink and girly and ruffly and you still don’t look like a crazy person.

I made this dress using patterns I drafted years ago for Kiko. The fabric is left over from this Kimono top (still one of my favorite summer item). The lace trim on the waist line is something I used for a wedding veil.

DIY | IKEA Lamp Makeover with Gold Leafing Pen

February 3, 2015 By Chie

DIY Gold Leafing Pen IKEA Lamp Makeover by Vivat Veritas1

Hello! The Vivat Veritas site had been down for the past few days and it’s finally up and running again. My apologies if you tried to access only to get an error message or taken to a host server’s site. I needed to migrate the server and I am happy that the process is now complete.

I have a few sewing projects to share here, including my second pair of Ginger jeans (first one here) in white stretch twill, cardigan to cropped sweater makeover and a lace wedding dress I’m working on, but for today, I’m, showing you a super easy DIY that I did last weekend. before and after of IKEA lamp makeover vivat veritas

Andy’s grandma is an awesome grandma. She truly knows what I like. She gave me the Ginger jeans patterns from Closet Case Files for Christmas. She also gave me a gold leafing pen! I’ve seen a few DIY’s popping up on my Pinterest feed (my DIY board is here) using the gold leafing pen, so I was trilled to have received it as a Christmas gift.

I decided to decorate an IKEA lamp share I’ve had for years. Previously, I decorated this simple shade with a washi tape but it looked rather boring. So I took off the tape (great thing about washi tape – easily removable) and drew a bunch of arrow-like shapes.

It turned out OK – I’m not crazy in love with it but I can always change things up in the future. I might redo the shade with pretty patterned paper or fabric with Mod Podge like I did with these boxes.

Importance of Planning Out a Sewing Project

January 19, 2015 By Chie

importance of planning out a sewing project by vivat veritasI wish all my handmade clothes were great and got a lot of wear but unfortunately that is not the case and this dress is certainly not on the favorites list. I think one thing that makes clothes become a go-to in your closet  (whether you make it or buy it at the store), depends on how well you plan. Almost every time I binge buy clothes or binge make them, it fails.

I made dress on a whim one night when I didn’t have any urgent project on my schedule. I had  left over knit from this sweater and decided to make a body-con knit dress. Considering how much wear I got from this white body-con dress over the Summer, I was sure that this would be something I would be wearing over and over again this Winter. While I was cutting out the fabric, I realized that I did not have enough fabric to cut the sleeves. My initial plan was to make this dress in a long sleeve version but I had to change mid way through.
Also since I made it in a rush (it was supposed to be an instant glorification), the neckline did not lay flat, especially in the back. It bothers me greatly.
The next day, I put on the dress, but when I saw myself in the mirror, I realized I hated the color. I like light gray color, a blue-gray or gray that is very close to white, but not this dark gray… My hair blends in with the dress and I look like a member of Adam’s Family.
I should have known the importance of planning for a sewing project, considering how much I put time on initial planning, sketching, sourcing the fabrics for making wedding dresses (you can see what I made in the past here). I think about how to construct the dress, in what order, what technique and sometimes I see myself in my dream sewing the dress. Once everything is completely clear, planned out, I start sewing. It usually goes well when I do that. Same goes for shopping for clothes or accessories. The items I covet for months before buying are the ones that I cherish for a long time.

Honestly, I wasn't sure whether to include this piece in this show. It was something I'd made a while back. But talking it through with Helen, we decided to show it together after all.

Working with Helen for almost three weeks to prepare for the show, I learned so much — how to build a collection, how to style looks that engage an audience, how to put together a look as a whole. I don't think I would have made the decision to include this piece if I'd been on my own. Creating something together with someone else really opens your eyes to things you wouldn't see alone.

thank you Helen @designerhelen♡

A precious obi entrusted to me by a client.

I often hear people say they aren't sure how to incorporate their cherished obis into their daily lives. That is exactly why I focus on reading the story woven into the fabric and reimagining it into a design that fits modern living😌

There are hidden details that make this bag truly functional, even if you can't see them at first glance. By attaching the shoulder strap, it becomes the perfect hands-free bag for an active lifestyle👜

The lining of a kimono — often discarded when the fabric is remade into something new.
That soft, lightweight silk felt too good to let go, so I turned it into a summer dress. It needed something more, so I asked artist Riko Monma to dye it for me — and suddenly it came alive again.

I made this piece a few years ago, but for the recent event with @designerhelena, I decided to bring it into the collection. Helen gave me so much guidance on color — combinations I never would have arrived at on my own. The whole preparation process was just really, really fun😌

Cafés do Brasil — the stamp from its days carrying beans stays right there on the back.

Kimono fabric has always been at the heart of what I do, but I want to bring in more materials with a history — things that have traveled, carried weight, meant something before they became a garment.
