Trip to Ho Chi Min City

March 5, 2014 By Chie

new world sigon breakfast1

Hello! Andy and I just came back from our 7th year wedding anniversary trip to Vietnam. We spent the last three days in Ho Chi Min City. Our anniversary was actually back in December, and we planned on going on vacation in early January, but we had to cancel our trip due to the anti-government protesters in Bangkok. We changed our plan, and instead of going to Thailand, we went to Vietnam. It was my first time there, and it was great! The weather felt so nice after the exceptionally cold winter in Tokyo. It actually was not as hot as I expected; at night it became breezy and nice to walk around in.

We spent our days having nice hotel breakfasts, hanging out at pool, and walking around the city. We walked from central city in District one all the way to Chit Lon, which is famous for their fabric district. I will write a separate post covering our adventure at the Viet Nam fabric market!

Sewing the Pink Coat:: Completed!

February 27, 2014 By Chie

pink coat completed by vivat veritas

As I blogged here and here, I was making myself BurdaStyle Wool Long Coat 08/2012#101B this year. Finally the coat is completed! Actually I was done about a month or two ago..Just did not have a chance to take pictures and blog. I am very pleased with this coat. I’ve warn it many times, and it has helped me survived this winter which was unusually cold for Tokyo.

I love:
– the boxy men’s wear inspired silhouette
– it covers my body down to my knees, and is double breasted front style which keeps me warm
– the pink color! It is easier for people to find me in a crowd of gray and black coats
– silk lining. It is very warm and luxurious. It was worth the money for the fabric!

I am not so crazy about:
– the sleeve insertion. Can you see the wrinkle around the armhole in my back view picture above?
– the shoulder width of the coat patterns. They were very wide, and I had to take in about 5 inches! Next time I sew this coat, I would do a narrow shoulder adjustment before I start sewing.

Overall, I am happy with the result. I bought three meters of this wool fabric, and used two meters for the coat. I also made a coat for Kiko with the rest of the fabric. Kiko’s coat is done, I just need to take pictures! It is super cute, I can’t wait to show it here.

Mommy’s Diary:: Third Birthday Party Ideas

February 20, 2014 By Chie

kiko third birthday party ideas by vivat veritas

Sources: 1/2/3/4/5

I enjoy having people over at our place. Birthday parties are one of the good excuses to plan a fun get-together, and as Kiko’s third birthday approaches in two months, I am already excited thinking about fun decorations and activities for the party. I even made a new pin board for birthday party ideas!

For Kiko’s first birthday, we did “Pink and Piggy” party. The second one was at our friend’s house, whose daughter’s birthday is the same day as Kiko’s. The theme was “Minnie Mouse“. Sadly the friend left the country so we can’t do the joint party this year. I’ve decided that this year’s theme to be a “Cupcake decoration” party. Kiko enjoys helping Andy and me out in the kitchen, from putting things back in the refrigerator to pushing the “grind” button on coffee mill, but most of all, she loves helping me lick the bowl after I bake. I’m thinking of having fun toppings and icings with plain cupcakes for the kids to decorate for the party!

Honestly, I wasn't sure whether to include this piece in this show. It was something I'd made a while back. But talking it through with Helen, we decided to show it together after all.

Working with Helen for almost three weeks to prepare for the show, I learned so much — how to build a collection, how to style looks that engage an audience, how to put together a look as a whole. I don't think I would have made the decision to include this piece if I'd been on my own. Creating something together with someone else really opens your eyes to things you wouldn't see alone.

thank you Helen @designerhelen♡

A precious obi entrusted to me by a client.

I often hear people say they aren't sure how to incorporate their cherished obis into their daily lives. That is exactly why I focus on reading the story woven into the fabric and reimagining it into a design that fits modern living😌

There are hidden details that make this bag truly functional, even if you can't see them at first glance. By attaching the shoulder strap, it becomes the perfect hands-free bag for an active lifestyle👜

The lining of a kimono — often discarded when the fabric is remade into something new.
That soft, lightweight silk felt too good to let go, so I turned it into a summer dress. It needed something more, so I asked artist Riko Monma to dye it for me — and suddenly it came alive again.

I made this piece a few years ago, but for the recent event with @designerhelena, I decided to bring it into the collection. Helen gave me so much guidance on color — combinations I never would have arrived at on my own. The whole preparation process was just really, really fun😌

Made from a coffee sack sourced from @allpress_espresso.

Cafés do Brasil — the stamp from its days carrying beans stays right there on the back.

Kimono fabric has always been at the heart of what I do, but I want to bring in more materials with a history — things that have traveled, carried weight, meant something before they became a garment.
