DIY: Bread Necklace

October 16, 2013 By Chie

When I went window-shopping at LUMINE Yurakucho, I found an interesting necklace. The necklace looks a bit like jyuzu (数珠), which is worn to a funeral in Japan. I was somewhat attracted by the uniqueness, and I felt that it would fit my casual clothes. But I hesitated to buy it, since it was not cheap. So I decided to make it by myself!
necklace_front
Supplies
breads thread
-120 beads, 6mm in diameter
–Metal clips.
The metal parts for clipping at the end of  a necklece.
-Nylon thread for stringing beads.
I used cotton thread for beads. I think any type of thread is fine except wire.
-Fabric.
For 2.5cm wide, 6mm length size beads,  stretched or biased fabrics are recommended. Cut fabric 5mm wider than a bead circumference, and 15cm or more longer than a length of necklace.
-Embroidery thread.
I pulled two strands out of six from the embroidery thread.
I bought the beads and the metal clips at 100 yen shop. The threads and fabric are frommy stock. So the total cost I paid for this necklace is only 300yen!
Let’s get started!
Step 1: string beads.
Step 2: set the clip at the one side of the end. please do not cut the nylon thread on the other side, so that you can adjust it later.

Step 3: fix the one side, and wrap the cloth on beads with embroidery thread.

Step 4: attach the clip at the other side of the end.

That’s it! Adjust the thread strength and jamming while wrapping the fabric around the beads, since the beads and thread can easily get twisted.
It might take some time to make it, but it isn’t hard at all 🙂 Please feel free to leave comments if you have any question.
I didn’t do anything on the selvage, since it didn’t seem like it will fray. I’m wondering if there is more sophisticated way to deal with the selvage…

Weekend:: Pumpkin Patch

October 14, 2013 By Chie

pumpkins1How was everyone’s weekend? We took Kiko to a pumpkin patch in Yumeno Shima(夢の島), Shin-Kiba(新木場) on Saturday. Look at those hormone infused giant pumpkins… It is actually a botanical garden, and inside, they have costumes for kids so they can dress up and take pictures. Although it is mid October, it was unusually hot. I can’t believe we still have 28 degrees day in October! yume no shima DSC_0824 copypumpkin patchChieSignature

DIY Sheer Blouson Jacket

October 12, 2013 By Chie

front back jacket by vivat veritasI bought this navy blue bomber style jacket at a thrift store called Nishi Kaigan (meaning West Coast 西海岸 in Japanese). I was pretty excited to go to this thrift store since I had heard about its mammoth size (which is rare in Japan) and cheapness, but I was rather disappointed when I got there. Yes, the place was huge, but from the piles of clothes, I did not find any gems or treasures that I always  manage to find when thrifting. I was not even completely sold on this jacket, I did not want to go home empty handed so I grabbed it. It is made out of Linen and stretch rib for waist and wrist, but I needed to spice it up before wearing it. I bought a sheer chiffon Georgette fabric that matches the color of the jacket and inserted the sheer panels in top half of back and sleeves.

After the quick DIY, it became one of my favorite outer pieces to throw on during the fall. Navy matches with almost anything in my closet and I like how it is a slightly different from wearing black.

Honestly, I wasn't sure whether to include this piece in this show. It was something I'd made a while back. But talking it through with Helen, we decided to show it together after all.

Working with Helen for almost three weeks to prepare for the show, I learned so much — how to build a collection, how to style looks that engage an audience, how to put together a look as a whole. I don't think I would have made the decision to include this piece if I'd been on my own. Creating something together with someone else really opens your eyes to things you wouldn't see alone.

thank you Helen @designerhelen♡

A precious obi entrusted to me by a client.

I often hear people say they aren't sure how to incorporate their cherished obis into their daily lives. That is exactly why I focus on reading the story woven into the fabric and reimagining it into a design that fits modern living😌

There are hidden details that make this bag truly functional, even if you can't see them at first glance. By attaching the shoulder strap, it becomes the perfect hands-free bag for an active lifestyle👜

The lining of a kimono — often discarded when the fabric is remade into something new.
That soft, lightweight silk felt too good to let go, so I turned it into a summer dress. It needed something more, so I asked artist Riko Monma to dye it for me — and suddenly it came alive again.

I made this piece a few years ago, but for the recent event with @designerhelena, I decided to bring it into the collection. Helen gave me so much guidance on color — combinations I never would have arrived at on my own. The whole preparation process was just really, really fun😌

Cafés do Brasil

Made from a coffee sack sourced from @allpress_espresso.

Cafés do Brasil — the stamp from its days carrying beans stays right there on the back.

Kimono fabric has always been at the heart of what I do, but I want to bring in more materials with a history — things that have traveled, carried weight, meant something before they became a garment.
