Bow Tie Dress from Girls’ Clothes by Fu-Ko basics

July 20, 2015 By Chie

Polkadot Dress from Japanese Sewing Book

Our local library has many great sewing books. Kiko and I go there once a week since they have a story telling program for little kids. While she is in the program, I wander around the sewing and crafting section and usually end up taking out one or two sewing books.

My recent sewing project for Kiko came from  the book, “Heart Warming Life Series: Girls’ Clothes by Fu-Ko basics” by Mayumi Minowa (Japanese title 作ってあげたい、女の子のお洋服).

I made Bow Tie Dress in size 120. Japanese kids clothing size goes 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120… and they point to the kids’ height in centimeters. Kiko is little over 110cm right now, but I made it in a bigger size so she can get the most wear out of it.

The fabric is cotton with pink dots. I bought the fabric back in 2012 and made curtains for her nursery. It looked cute in the room but it did not cut out the light so later on I bought light shielding curtain which cuts the outside light completely. It comes handy for naps when she used to take one or summer nights when the outside is still bright at 7pm. Since we no longer need the polkadot curtains, I recycled it to make the bow tie dresses.

I love making clothes for her at night and surprise her in the morning. It’s like a mini Christmas. I hang the new clothes in her room while she is asleep and she finds it when she gets up. I was convinced that she would love this dress. It’s 1)dress, 2)pink and 3)bow tie. What more can a girl dream for?

Contrary to my expectation, I did not get a good reaction out of her. She did not like it at all and told me I can give it to her friend! I was furious. I thought about giving it away so she can’t wear it but she kept insisting that I should give away, so I thought maybe I should demand that she wears it even though she does not like it to teach her to appreciate things that she is given. I think she got my point.

If you sew for your children, do you get a reaction “I don’t like this”? When that happens how do you react?

Before & After | Liberty Print Dress

March 10, 2015 By Chie

DIY kids liberty print dress vivat veritas1 (4)My friends know that I like to sew and make things so I often get fabrics and clothes donated. Recently my friend gave me a bag full of clothes she no longer wears. She is a sewer as well, and showed me her failed attempt to make a top with a jersey in red floral liberty print. Although liberty print is a bit too young and cutesy for me, I love it on little girls. When I got this top, I immediately thought of easy tube dress for Kiko.

before after red top to kids dress vivat veritas

It was an easy project that took less than hour. I cut the top in the length I wanted, added elastic around the top and attached shoulder straps.

I made this at night after Kiko went to bed. She goes to bed at 7pm and after that is my sewing time. I placed the finished dress right next to her bed while she was sleeping, so when she woke up in the morning, there was a little surprise beside her.

Check out this, this and this to see what else I’ve made her recently.

Tutorial | How to Make a Nursing Cape

February 26, 2015 By Chie

how to make a nursing cape by vivat veritasDIY Nursing Cape

Since turning 30, it feels as though everyone around me is having a baby. Whenever the time allows, I try to come up with some handmade gifts. This cape was particularly special to me since it was a request from my friend whom I made my first wedding dress for back in 2011. She told me that she wanted a cape that has a wire in the top hem to adjust the movement and have a peek at her baby while nursing. Also, she told me that the capes that are currently on the market are all similar, mostly made in liberty print cotton. She wanted something different for nursing her baby boy.

I went to a craft shop called Yuzawaya and online chatted with her to choose the fabric. She picked this cute car print, which is perfect for a boy! The production of the cape is pretty straight forward. Let me know if you have any questions and if you like this cape, please share the picture and tag me on instagram (@vivatveritas).

tutorial on nursing cape by vivat veritas1 tutorial on nursing cape by vivat veritas2 tutorial on nursing cape by vivat veritas3 tutorial on nursing cape by vivat veritas4Fabric: Non-sheer cotton or poly mix cotton without stretch. I used a cotton twill with medium weight that I bought from Yuzawaya(ユザワヤ).
Material: 1 meter of fabric, 90cm of wire, tread, 1 button (I used 2cm diameter), and a strap buckle.
nursing cape diagrams copy

1. Cut the fabric according to the diagram.
2. Fold the top of the fabric by 2cm and press. Fold again by 3cm and press. Sew the folded hem.
3. Cut the wire for 90cm and bend the both ends so that the wire won’t poke through the fabric when you insert it in the top hem. Insert the wire in the top hem sewn in step 2.
4. hem the side seams. Fold by 1cm and press and do the same again (total side seam allowances are 2cm each side). Sew the side seams being careful not to sew the wires since that will break the needle!
5. Hem the bottom in the same way you did for the top hem (see step 2).

Making straps

6. Fold the straps in half with fabric’s right sides facing.
7. Sew with 1 cm seam allowances leaving a small opening (3-4cm) so you can turn the straps inside out.
8. Using bodkin, turn the straps inside out and press. Top stitch all around the straps, closing the opening you left unsewn in the step7.
9. Attach the neck strap in the place marked in the diagram. Attach a button in the other side. Sew a button hole on neck strap.

Attach back straps

10. Attach the back straps in the marked place. Attach a buckle on the other end of the strap.

Something I've been building since 2008 — taking k Something I've been building since 2008 — taking kimono fabric, fabric that already holds someone's memory, and giving it a new life.

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Released. Reimagined. ふたりのデザイナー。ふたつの都市。ひとつの共通した信念——美しいものには、もう一度輝く機会がある✨

イベントまであと1週間を切りました。当日、いいお天気になりますように☀️

It took quite a bit of wandering to find this venue. Tucked just off a quiet side street from Harajuku’s Takeshita Exit — full glass frontage, light pouring in. The moment I stepped inside, I knew🌱

Right at the entrance, @brownie_shots will be running a pop-up☕︎ The central space becomes our runway. VIP seating going in now.

Less than one week to go. Fingers crossed for sunshine ☀️
