Behind the scenes: photo shoot with Maya

Some behind the scene photos from this week’s photo shoot! Remember I posted about coming up with an image board for the shoot? This was the first photo shoot after the baby was born, so I was pretty excited. I did not make anything new for this shoot, we used some dresses that a model, Maya chose from my previous work. We shot five different dresses, with different make-up and hair for each shot. Tashi, the make up artist was amazing – so innovative, and he came up with different make up and hair to match Maya’s preference and the dress style. I can’t wait to show you the finished photos, and hear what you think of them..since everything (make up, hair, styling) are so different from my regular style.

1960’s fashion photos

What is your favorite fashion era? I can say without a hesitation my favorite is 60’s. I love Twiggy’s style, A-line mod dresses in fun bold color, fake lashes and scarf on hair. Over the past couple of weeks, an opportunity has come up for me to work with a Japanese model, and her favorite make up artist to create photos replicating old movie (Audrey Hepburn etc), classy feel using my clothes. The shoot is happening this week, and I’ve been collecting some inspirational images for it. I’m so excited since this will be my first shoot after having Sophia Kiko. Can’t wait to show you how the photos will turn out!

Sneak peak – new creations for “after the carnival” shoot

So I managed to sneak in some time for sewing last week, and completed these dresses and a romper for my next photo shoot coming up in early June. As I wrote here before, the theme the next shoot is carnival, and I really wanted to incorporate fun, bright, solid colors to the clothes. I think I was a bit influenced by some clothes I saw over at Zara, where they used two neon colors in one outfit (bright yellow + green, passion pink + orange etc). Although I’m not brave enough to incorporate neon colors to my daily wardrobe, I tried to use brighter colors to this shoot. My natural tendency is to go for softer colors, like lavender, pale pink, or basic colors like black and white, so it was a challenge for me to use bright colors. And as you can see, I cheated a bit by using beige and stripes:p Oh it was also hard for me not to go for floral prints! I just love floral prints, and whenever I go to fabric shopping, I’m so drawn to them and it was hard not to pick any floral prints up!

Another recurring element to these clothes is the use of piping – I love the look of piping in clothes and home decor (love piping on pillow cases!). I had been wanting to incorporate piping into my creations since I saw “the blue garden” frock on the Sew Convert. At first I was intimidated to try it, since it looked complicated. I followed her tutorial, and surprisingly it was pretty easy! And I think piping adds nice classy look to an ordinary clothes. You can see I was hooked to it, I kept adding piping to different part of the clothes:) It was fun to pick out the color combinations too. For the cord for piping, instead of paying overpriced piping cords at craft store, I went to 100 yen shop (dollar store equivalent here in Japan), and bought a bunch of cords there.

I’m excited for the shoot, and can’t wait to show you the finished images! 🙂
