Making Wedding Dress Pt.3 – Another Muslin

August 8, 2011 By Chie

Read:

Part 1 – Fabric shopping
Part 2 – Muslin

Previously in Part 2, I wrote that I sent my bride-to-be friend a muslin of the wedding dress. She tried on the muslin over the top of her under wear corset, and it turned out that the muslin was little too big. She said it was about 4cm to big on the side, but to be sure I asked her to pin the dress till it fits her and send it back to me by mail.

She sent back the dress with lovely panda note and flower chemical lace. We have not decided yet, but maybe we will use the lace to decorate the bust line. The lace is beautiful! I want it for myself…

This is how the dress came back – ironed and pinned on the side to show how much I should take it in. At this point, I started to get nervous. This was the 4th muslin I made. Because of the distance between her and I, it was hard to get the fit just right. Also her wedding date is approaching and I would like to give the completed piece to her at least two weeks ahead of time.

I took out the pins, and measured how much she took in. It was about 2.5″ on top bust line, and 1″ at the top of the waist line. Then I sewed the line she pinned together, so I can keep this muslin piece which fits her well to guide me through the rest of sewing process.

Now, time to make another musli. Hopefully this is the last time! I decided to only make a muslin for the bodice, as the skirt fit her well. This time I did things a bit differently: I worked on the seam line, instead of seam allowances. This I learned from Gertie’s Perfect Bombshell course I took over at Craftsy.com. I was used to working on seam allowances, since most patterns from BurdaStyle include seam allowances. However, many Japanese pattern books do not include seam allowances, and I used to get frustrated because I would often forgot to add the seam allowance myself. After taking Gertie’s course though, I am convinced that it is better to work on seam line for dresses like this in order to get a more accurate fitting. I made paper patterns, traced it on muslin fabric, added 1/2″ seam allowances, machine basted the seam line.

Machine basting the seam lines was very, very helpful. I can feel the stitch to match when connecting the pieces together. I think this way is better making a dress which  1/8″ or even 1/16″ difference matters.

I added a note, and sent the 5th muslin to my friend. Now I’m anxiously waiting for her to receive and tell me “it fits perfectly”..

Mommy’s Diary 15 – Traveling with an Infant

August 4, 2011 By Chie

Baby in Korean Air bassinet

So today, I wanted to share my experience of traveling with an infant. Andy and I took Kiko to Korea, and honestly, it was a bad idea! I was deciding between leaving her with my mother, taking her or not going to Korea at all, but I decided to go and take Kiko with us because I just felt like I needed a vacation. Being pregnant for the past year limited my travel, and I wanted to go somewhere! Kiko had been a pretty good baby and easy to deal with, so I assumed everything would be fine. I was so wrong.

First of all, the plane ride was challenging – more challenging than I thought! Thank God it was only 1 hour and 40 minutes to Korea from Japan. Right before boarding, Kiko decided to go to bathroom so I had to run to the nearest bathroom to change her. Then I found out that her poop leaked all over her clothes. While changing her diaper and clothes, it got on to my clothes somehow, and I found myself wearing clothes with her poop all over the place. Of course, I was wearing a white pair of shorts that day! 🙁 So after cleaning her and myself, we finally boarded the plane, as we sat Kiko vomited all over the place. Ha.  She has amazing timing!?

During flights, especially international flights, I usually enjoy a drink or two. Of course that did not happen, because Kiko started to cry upon takeoff. Perhaps her ears hurt because of the altitude change. Or  maybe (far more likely)she was just having a temper tantrum. Either way, I was so embarrassed and felt sorry for the other passengers. Prior to having a baby, I was always annoyed by travelers with kids, and I would get mad, thinking “why can these parents manage their own children?!” But now, I’m the annoying parent I once despised…

Also, during the Korea trip, Kiko decided that she would no longer take her bottle. I’m not sure what happened, but I’ve read on babycenter.com that this kind of thing happens around 2-3 months old. At this age babies start becoming selective. It did not matter whether the contents of the bottle were pumped breast milk or formula. As soon as the bottle touched her mouth, she would scream! Why she chose the week of our trip for this I will never know.

I was so mad at her. I feel like having a child has given me all kinds of emotions that I had never experienced. I was mad at her for not taking the bottle, but at the same time, felt terrible and guilty for forcing her the drink from a bottle which she did not want. I was on the verge of giving up, but after some thought, Andy and I decided that Kiko must take the bottle because with my work and Andy’s role in caring for the baby, I cannot be available her for breastfeeding 24/7. So… we started the war – We decided on the last night of the trip that the following day upon her waking up, we would not give Kiko the breast until she drank from the bottle. It took nearly 8 hours until Kiko started drinking from the bottle again, and when I saw her drinking from the bottle, I cried…

I almost went crazy listening to her temper tantrum screams during the day, and I was beyond angry. But during all of my anger, I felt so sad, guilty and embarrassed for having that kind of emotion toward my child. I just wished the war did not have to happen away from home during our trip!

Because of that, I could not really enjoy the trip and was relieved to be back home. It was nice to see the family, who were visiting from the U.S. for the Summer, which was the reason why we went there in the first place. Now I’m reconsidering taking Kiko to the U.S., because how can I manage a 15 hour plane ride with Kiko if I could not manage 2 hour plane ride!? Does anyone have any tips? Also what happens to a baby with jet lag?

I’ll share some pictures of Korea in another post, and I promise it will be a more positive one!

And last but not least, I am so thankful that the baby seems to forget things so easily. She smiles at me as if she’s forgotten that the war ever happened.

The lining of a kimono — often discarded when the fabric is remade into something new.
That soft, lightweight silk felt too good to let go, so I turned it into a summer dress. It needed something more, so I asked artist Riko Monma to dye it for me — and suddenly it came alive again.

I made this piece a few years ago, but for the recent event with @designerhelena, I decided to bring it into the collection. Helen gave me so much guidance on color — combinations I never would have arrived at on my own. The whole preparation process was just really, really fun😌

Garments waiting on the rack. Brushes in hand. Quiet conversations in corners. The unhurried moment before everything becomes a show.

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Released. Reimagined. ふたりのデザイナー。ふたつの都市。ひとつの共通した信念——美しいものには、もう一度輝く機会がある✨

イベントまであと1週間を切りました。当日、いいお天気になりますように☀️

It took quite a bit of wandering to find this venue. Tucked just off a quiet side street from Harajuku’s Takeshita Exit — full glass frontage, light pouring in. The moment I stepped inside, I knew🌱

Right at the entrance, @brownie_shots will be running a pop-up☕︎ The central space becomes our runway. VIP seating going in now.

Less than one week to go. Fingers crossed for sunshine ☀️
