MADE | Transitional Piece

March 1, 2016 By Chie

what i made - beige wrap dressWinter is my least favorite season. Not only do I hate being cold, but also fashion wise, I get sick of multiple layers. Usually I end up wearing jeans and a Uniqlo sweater.  So boring! But…..I had a chance to get to Nippori last weekend and that gave me some sewjo to make myself something fun to wear. After going through piles of knits on the second floor of Tomato fabric store, I ended up with this beige knit. It is medium to thick knit made out of 80% of rayon. The rest of the fabric content is a mixture of polyester and polyurethane, so the knit does not go too stretchy after some washes. The wrong side of the fabric is flannelized to keep it warm and it feels good against the skin.beige dress full bodyThe pattern was from a store bought dress I had. I did not do anything special except for lengthening the sleeves. I sewed the front neckline with an elastic so that the neckline would not get stretched. The whole thing is serged and the hem was done by hand. This way the hem sewing line is invisible. Sewing was simple and in total it took less than two hours to make.beige wrap dress back style - beige wrap dress

It fits pretty well, though I could do without some creases in the back. But, at the same time, I did not want the dress to be skin tight like one of those f21 dresses that college kids wear to clubs…
When Kiko saw me wearing the dress, she said “mommy, new dress?! But it is too small for you!”. In her mind a  “dress” needs to be long and fluffy like some kind of Disney princess. beige layersI’m planning on wearing with cardigan, long boots (from Zara) and plaid scarf for now. Once the weather warms up, I want to pair it with white sneakers and leather jacket. main_20160301_tiered_launch

Last but not least, my favorite online shop, Shopbop is running a spring sale from 3/1-3/5. Check out here.

chie sig2

Bridal Photoshoot with Tuli

February 26, 2016 By Chie

bridal photo in hamarikyuI teamed up with jewelry designer, Megan of Tuli for a recent bridal shoot. Megan is an American, who lives in Japan. She was in Uganda as a journalist for a while, and developed a relationship with local ladies and trained them to make beads out of paper. I enjoy working with brands with strong mission statement. Check out more about her story and jewelry here. We shot with this dress and this dress.

Besides Megan, we had French, Filipino, and Peruvian girls who gathered as make up artists, hair stylists, and a model to contribute to this shoot. It’s fun to meet with people from different countries who happen to find their way to Tokyo.

Usually I leave Kiko when I do photoshoot, but I could not find the childcare on that particular day. So, we biked to Hamarikyu park in Tsukiji together. I was surprised how much Kiko was into this whole photoshoot experience; she was talking to all the girls, helping the stylist, taking many photos (some of the below photos were taken by her and edited by me), and just overall having a great time. She was so proud of herself for being a “big help” and I was, too! Flowers at Hamarikyu Park1 Portrait by my daughter Flowers at Hamarikyu Park2 Flowers at Hamarikyu Park3 Flowers at Hamarikyu Park6Although it was still cold, you could see pretty flowers started to bloom. my little photoshoot helperBehind the scenes of the shoot with Kiko helping the stylist.

Kuala Lumpur Photo Diary

February 16, 2016 By Chie

kuala lumpur photo diary - vivat veritasFollowing my last post about the National Textile Museum in Kuala Lumpur, here are the rest of the photos from my trip. It was a short three day trip, but it was the perfect length to get a sense of the city. Had I stayed longer, I would have explored the outskirts, maybe a place like Malacca. We found an airbnb place in towntown for $50 per night. The location was fantastic; walking distant to all the shopping malls and restaurants in Bukit Bingtang. As much as I enjoy staying in a hotel, airbnb helps me stay slim since I can prepare my own food without the temptation of breakfast buffet. The place was great and came with pool and gym. We intended to use the gym everyday but never did. But, we walked a lot! Hopefully that counts.

There is something mind renewing about a trip like this even if it was short. We walked aimlessly for hours on end. When do you have a chance to walk around for the sake of walking around in your daily life? I am too busy getting from A to B when I’m in Tokyo. The thought of going for a walk does not even occur to me. So mindlessly walking around, talking, stopping for coffee cleared my mind and by the end of the trip, I was ready to dive into the regular work again.airbnb KL bedroom airbnb KL living room airbnb malaysia pool gym 23 hour cafe chinese new year decorationWe went right before the Chinese New Year.

From tradition, into everyday life.

One obi, carefully unstitched and reborn as a one-shoulder bag for daily wear🌸

It holds far more than it looks — scissors, thread, a seam ripper, pliers… all my sewing tools tucked neatly inside✂️✨ Though I’m probably the only one who’d pack it like this😆

The lining inside is a little secret I’m quite fond of♡

Furisode — the long-sleeved kimono young women tra Furisode — the long-sleeved kimono young women traditionally wear once in their lives, for their Coming of Age Day ceremony (Seijin Shiki) at 20 — often gets worn just that one time. I actually wore my cousin’s furisode for mine, so hers got a second life. But most don’t. They live for one single day, then disappear into the back of a drawer, unseen for decades 😴

But beautiful silk doesn’t have to end there.
From a once-in-a-lifetime ceremonial robe to something you can wear again and again. This piece — butterflies mid-flight, flowers in bloom — deserved a new season. So I remade it into an i line dress.

A customer from Australia chose her kimono online and placed an order✂️

I first mailed a mock-up, and little by little, checking the length and width over Zoom, the dress took shape.

When the photos arrived of the two of them smiling under the cherry blossoms, in the vermillion red of the torii gate — even from far away, I felt so happy knowing that something woven by my hands had truly become part of someone's life♡

This silk is so light, perfect for the hot season 🫠

I made these wide-leg pants from a kimono✂️ The thin silk lets the breeze through, and the hem sways softly with every step ♪

The back is made from what used to be the kimono sleeves, so the floral pattern on the hips ends up upside down👻 I wasn’t sure at first, but honestly it grew on me, so I left it as is 🫶🏻

One of a kind, just this one pair. If you’re curious, the link is in my profile ♡

Reimagined.」

Reimagined.」

Helen x Vivat Veritas

A silk dress I made a few years ago.

For this ""Released. Reimagined."" concept, I asked @redyeingproject to dye it black.

This collaboration grew out of a connection made when he joined the Helen x Vivat Veritas event as a vendor.

""Before you throw it away, consider black dyeing.""
His concept — reviving faded clothes through by-the-gram redyeing — really resonated with me.

The silk skirt, a natural fiber, transformed into a deep, beautiful black.
The chantilly lace took on a subtly greenish tone.

A small choice, in service of wearing one piece for longer.
Take a look at the before/after photos🩷🖤

If you wore this to a café, you'd definitely stand out 😆☕

A new form of fashion, born from upcycling. A coffee bean sack jacket × a kimono-remake set-up.

Every single piece is finished entirely by hand, from matching the fabric patterns to the sewing itself 🪡🧚 Actually, this kimono has a different fabric worked into the lining too — there's a color that only reveals itself once you put it on ♡

I wanted to give the stories sleeping in vintage materials a chance to become part of someone's everyday life again.

Honestly, I wasn't sure whether to include this piece in this show. It was something I'd made a while back. But talking it through with Helen, we decided to show it together after all.

Working with Helen for almost three weeks to prepare for the show, I learned so much — how to build a collection, how to style looks that engage an audience, how to put together a look as a whole. I don't think I would have made the decision to include this piece if I'd been on my own. Creating something together with someone else really opens your eyes to things you wouldn't see alone.

thank you Helen @designerhelen♡
