Sewing Technique:: Mitered Corner

Hello! I want to show you this quick project I worked on. I had some left over fabrics from making these skirts and bag I wanted to do something with them so as to not increase my fabric scrap stash. I think many sewers know that fabric stashs tend to overflow pretty quickly if you don’t consciously try to get rid of the unnecessary excess. I decided to make a table cloth and napkins (luncheon mats?). We have this very ugly dining table but I can’t seem to part from it because it was my parents’ first dining table. I used to have tablecloth to cover the ugliness, but since Kiko kept pulling it off, I got rid of it. But these table cloth and napkins will be a good cover-up whenever we have people over at our place.

I used the tutorial on the Martha Stewart website, “Sewing a Mitered Corner“. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. I love the clean finish on the corner.

DIY:: Linen Yarn Plant Holder

window and anemone copyI love having plants and flowers in the house. It has become my weekly routine to stop at a nearby flower shop to buy some fresh flowers for the house. I love how much difference it makes to the house’s ambiance and my mood in general to have flowers around:)

The other day, I found this pot of anemone on sale for 100 yen ($1). I usually stay away from plants and pots because I have a black thumb. When I first got married, I really wanted to fill our new apartment with greens. I had aloe, a palm tree, and a cactice. They all died. I don’t know what I did to kill them, but they all turned brown… so I had been staying away from plants but I could not resist these pretty pink flowers. Also the guy at the flower shop said that anemone flower season is ending, so I would not feel bad about myself when these flowers die.

Anyway, I wanted to hang this pretty near the window so it receives a ton of light. With a linen yarn and crochet hook, I made this plant holder. linen yarn plant holder after1 copylinen yarn for plant holder copyI am not terribly good at crocheting, so I made it up as I went. First I made a circle big enough to cover the bottom of the plant pot. After I made the circle, I kept crocheting without increasing the stitches, so it naturally rolled and made a shape like a bowl. After that, I added long strings on four corners at the top, and made a simple knot to hold the strings together. DIY Cat Object

I’ve been moving things around the house lately to decorate and organize the place better. We got rid of the old ugly TV that we never watched. We also bought a new cabinet for the kitchen, and re-painted the old one to turn it into a liquor cabinet (I’ll show you the result soon! 🙂 ) I stopped by at a local recycle shop on the way to the post office the other day, and I found this cat. It’s made out of wood, and one of the ears is cracked. It’s relatively ugly, but I brought her back home. It was only 200 yen.

Inspired by these white animal objects from cute furniture and interior decoration store, fran fran, I spray painted my cat white. I sprayed it with a couple of layers and voila! Now she is sitting on our liquor cabinet-to-be.

This pretty post card is my most recent purchase from a shopping (mostly window shopping) trip to Shimokita. I love it, and put it in a pretty frame to decorate the house.
