Creating A Lookbook Pt. 1

November 15, 2011 By Chie

Hello! Since I’ve finished writing the “Making the Wedding Dress” series, I was thinking about what I should do for my next series. I thought it might be fun and informative to do a mini series (Perhaps 3 parts over 3 weeks) on creating a lookbook for your clothes. In the past year or so, I’ve had a number of opportunities to do  photo shoots using my creations. Some shoots were planned by me, and others were collaborations where I contributed as a designer or stylist for someone else’s shoot. For some shoots, I have not even been present, I just loaned out my clothes. Here, I would like to write about the experience as an organizer of a  shoot. Photo shoots are fun, but take a lot of effort! It’s like preparing for a big party.

Here are some things I’ve learned while preparing for a shoot:

1. Decide on a theme and concept.

I like to come up with a cohesive theme incorporating all my designs for a given shoot, this includes deciding how to display the clothes. I like to give a title, like “Secret Garden” or “After the Carnival“. I think it’s fun, and the title will guide you throughout the planning process and help you stay on the initial concept. It is easy to go off track or get confused without a set direction.

2. Collect some inspiration images.

Every time I plan a shoot, I create a folder and save images that are similar to the ones I am aiming for. This helps the photographer, make up artist, model and everyone else involved in the shoot to stay on the same page. This also lets me set the goal for the images that I am hoping to attain. I like this process a lot. I go through Pinterest or Tumblr for pretty images to inspire me.

3. Check out the locations and take pictures.

I vastly prefer the studio, because the weather does not matter. But getting  studio space  in Japan is very expensive.
For the last shoot, I picked a near by park. I went there a couple of times before the shooting day to check out possible locations and took some pictures to help plan specific shots and specific locations within the park.

Other things you might want to consider are: how crowded is the place? do you need to get a permission to shoot at the location? In some places in the past, I was asked whether I have a written permission to shoot.

4. Talk to photographer, model and make up artist.

Communication is key! For successful shoots, I always have a long chain of emails between everyone involved, especially with photographers. I communicate what I’m aiming for, and incorporate their advice and suggestions.

5. Create a shooting plan sheet.

Last shoot I did was the first time I made the plan sheet, and it was an enormous help! I have different columns in Word Doc, stating the order of the shoot and time, inspiration images, location images, clothes and props, and make up and hair plan.

I hope this helps – I will be back on Tuesday next week with more tips 🙂

Last Week

November 14, 2011 By Chie

Sorry for the lack of posts last week! You saw my husband, Andy helped me out with posts last week:p I’m so glad to be back and have time to relax a bit now. I did no sewing last week.

Last week had a few few highlights, here they are: 1. Received my newest sewing book in the mail: Cool Couture by Kenneth D. King! 2. Went out on a date with Andy, and found this set of toothbrushes. 3. Tried on fuzzy ear muffs at 390 shop in Machida. 4. The weather is getting chilly and it makes me want to drink hot green tea. 5. Found my page in BurdaStyle book at Maruzen bookstore in Tokyo! 6. Also found this adorable craft book (I’m sorry I don’t remember the title). I must make this for Kiko! too cute. 7. & 8. Ate at the restaurant Kurosawa. It was named after the Japanese movie director, Akira Kurosawa. Delicious! 9. Did a wedding dress photo shoot and my sister came to help me out. She is so adorable…love her! :p

Mommy’s Diary 29 (Daddy’s Diary 4)

November 10, 2011 By Chie

Ladies, you are getting more than you probably wanted from me this week. Fear not Chie will be back soon! Chie asked me to write this daddy’s diary on the significance behind Kiko’s life verse Romans 12:2.
For those unfamiliar with the verse here it is “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

As I thought about the birth of my first child and what impression I want to leave on her I thought long and hard. The scriptures are life and it is hard to  localize one focal point but after thought and prayer I ended on this verses. Here’s why;

First, this verse assumes a certain knowledge of the Lord. As parents raising our children Chie and I will look to raise Kiko “in” the knowledge of the Lord not “to” a  knowledge of the Lord. What I mean by this is, Lord willing there will never be a time when my daughter does not have intimate knowledge of her God and Father and a relationship with Jesus Christ. From infancy I pray she understand her place as a daughter of Christ. If the Lord so allows she will always be one who is a follower and will be one who does not need instruction to come to the Lord but will be one who needs instruction on how to live as a follower. This verse is sent to someone inside the family. It is instruction for a highly prized child just as I pray Kiko will be. She is a child set apart for the Lord who the Lord through the Scriptures will continually teach on how to live as the daughter she truly is.

Secondly, this verse says all of what I want her to know about this life. If for some reason I do not live to see her grow in this life, I can be sure this verse will well represent what I would have tried to teach her. She being a daughter in a Christian family will have  certain privileges in the kingdom. Being a daughter in the family will also come with certain requirements and duties. Being a daughter of the Kingdom will also mean that she must always be separate and never hold too tightly to this world which is passing away. She is to be transformed day by day moment by moment by the knowledge of the perfection of Christ. She is to discern the truth from the lies of this world and to know God through meditation on perfection. If this verse can be applied and lived, my hope and desire for my daughter will have been realized. Kiko is not first and foremost my daughter, she is first and foremost the daughter of the most high and it is as that which I must raise her. I must raise her to look beyond me. It is as the daughter of Christ that she must live.

Thirdly, this verse comes in a chapter from which I plan to give all my future children a life verse from. In having all my children vested in Romans 12 I hope to give them a unique family experience a unique corporate understanding to their Christian walk. Certainly my children will walk as individual Christians with personal devotion to the Lord but, beyond  that  I pray they see themselves as part of a family which is  set apart unto the Lord. As they can see themselves within a family of believers hopefully Kiko and the future children can understand themselves as part of something  even larger than that, I pray they begin to fully realize their position in Christ beyond merely the “I”. They are a part of the body and this body spans time, race, gender, it connects fellow members to their Lord in ways beyond description and does so for eternity.
Lastly, I see this verse as a promise. It is a promise that what is of the Lord, what is of Christ is perfection and has power to transform. It has power to give life and to give it abundantly. That perfection when gazed upon, when meditated upon can deliver what I as her earthly father never can, what no earthly entity ever can. It is a promise that we are destined to perfection and that holding on to that perfection here and now will give life beyond which I can possibly understand.
Kiko, as your father, I lift you up, I entrust that you will not be conformed to this world but rather you will be transformed and will know, you will see you will understand perfection and know that the perfection of Him is a perfection that you are called to embody here and now through the guidance and sanctification of the Spirit.
Andy

去年の夏の3週間、アメリカとヨーロッパを旅しながら、座席でひたすらチクチク🪡着物の裏地にキルト芯を挟んで、フリーハンドで刺し子して、日本に帰ってから染めました。

This jacket was made on airplanes and trains✈️🚆

Over three weeks last summer, traveling through the US and Europe, I stitched away in my seat🪡
Kimono lining sandwiched with quilt batting, sashiko stitched freehand, then dyed after I got back to Japan.

The lining of a kimono — often discarded when the fabric is remade into something new.
That soft, lightweight silk felt too good to let go, so I turned it into a summer dress. It needed something more, so I asked artist Riko Monma to dye it for me — and suddenly it came alive again.

I made this piece a few years ago, but for the recent event with @designerhelena, I decided to bring it into the collection. Helen gave me so much guidance on color — combinations I never would have arrived at on my own. The whole preparation process was just really, really fun😌

Cafés do Brasil — the stamp from its days carrying beans stays right there on the back.

Kimono fabric has always been at the heart of what I do, but I want to bring in more materials with a history — things that have traveled, carried weight, meant something before they became a garment.

Before the doors opened, there was this. Garments Before the doors opened, there was this.

Garments waiting on the rack. Brushes in hand. Quiet conversations in corners. The unhurried moment before everything becomes a show.
