DIY Faux Leather Baseball Cap

May 11, 2015 By Chie

DIY faux leather baseball cap by Vivat Veritas2

There was a time when I was obsessed with a thought of wearing leather pants. I saw a picture on Pinterest (like this or this) with some fashion magazine editor rocking leather pants and  decided it’s was the coolest thing. Because real leather pants are very expensive (over $1000!!) I searched Rakuten, my go to place for cheap replica of expensive designs. I bought my pair for about $15. It is made out of matte black stretch pleather. I liked them a lot and every time I wore them, it made me feel like a rock star. But unfortunately they quickly fell apart. Look at this picture of crotch. I was sad, but at least it lasted me many wears and I’ve worn it for more than one year.

I kept the pants in my fabric stash hoping I’ll get to refashion it into something new. I happened to come across with this Japanese hat making book, titled “Kodawatte Boushi Tsukurimasu (こだわって帽子作ります)” at a local library. I am completely new to hat making (only done knitted hats) but I had all the material I needed: fabric, plastic interface (left over from using for waist band for this wedding dress), iron-on interface and grosgrain ribbon.
It was a quick sew. Only two pieces of patterns needed! Brim and crown. Because the pleather was not sticky like oil cloth, I had no problem with sewing it with my regular needle and machine.
It was fun to make and it kept me cool from strong sun during the Golden Week outing.

Gray Sweatpants from a Japanese Pattern Book

April 30, 2015 By Chie

Sweatpants from Japanese sewing book Vivat Veritas

I sewed up these comfy sweatpants just in time for all the fun outings for Golden Week! In Japan, there is a series of national holidays from the end of April to beginning of May, called Golden Week. It feels as though we have a perfect weather without fail during this holiday every year – it’s dry, warm but not too cold or hot. We have some fun plans as a family so I made myself these sweatpants that can be worn outside.

The patterns are from a Japanese pattern book, called Otona no pants to skirt (Pants and Skirts for Adults (大人のパンツとスカート). I borrowed the book from a local library. Since I saw the Hudson patterns by True Bias, stylish sweatpants have joined the list of “to-sew”. Look at Heather with these cool sweatpants! I was going to buy the patterns but I happened to come across with this book at the library so I decided to use it instead of Hudson.

Once you trace the patterns, the cutting and sewing are super easy and quick. I made a pair without any modification (E-2, long version) first. It ended up way too big for me. From behind, it looked like I had an elephant butt 🙁 So I gave that to Andy (we match!) and they fit him well. These ones I’m wearing are my second try. I took in about 12 cm all around the hip area. They are loose enough to be comfortable but not too baggy. I also shortened the length by 4cm.

What I love about these pants are the huge pockets! There is a pleat in pocket piece and it drapes nicely. I can fit all kind of stuff here.

Both sweatpants fabric and the rib I used for waistband and ankle bands are from Tomato (日暮里トマト) in Nippori. I bought them on the second floor, knit section.

I wore this to a casual meeting the other day.

A butterfly doesn’t transform alone.

Someone sews, and a shape is born.
Someone paints, and light finds a face.
Someone adorns, and a story stirs beside the ear.

Each gesture layered upon the next —
until one garment spreads its wings on the runway🦋

Before the doors opened, there was this. Garments Before the doors opened, there was this.

Garments waiting on the rack. Brushes in hand. Quiet conversations in corners. The unhurried moment before everything becomes a show.

""Released. Reimagined."" with @designerhelen was made possible by so many generous hands — our makeup and hair team, our models, every person who showed up early and stayed late. Thank you for caring for these pieces, and for each other, the way you did.

More to come🤍

Reimagined.""

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Released. Reimagined.
