Collaboration with Takatsu Akemi ART GALLERY

November 1, 2021 By Chie

Takatsu Akemi fabric with stretch lace, dainty gold rings from Au-Rate, stainless silver ring from Ashkal Jewelry.

I’m working on a new exciting project! A few months back, I applied to participate in a creative contest through an online Japanese market place named creema. To take part in the selection process you need to be a creator who designs and makes items using traditional Japanese crafts from Kumamoto prefecture. Textiles was an easy category, since as you know, I make clothes. If chosen, the creator would make something using fabric, designed by Ms. Akemi Takatsu. Her fabrics are made using a method called “Rouketsu Zome” (candle wax dye). She draws patterns on fabrics using hot melting candle wax. After allowing it to dry she dips the fabric in a dye bath. After this she remove the wax. You can see the examples of her original wax dye fabric below (Left and middle).

高津明美 生地

Her fabrics are bright with strong geometrical lines, inspired by Aso mountain and unique flowers that only grow in the south of Japan.

高津明美 生地 スカーフ

I was thrilled when I found out I was selected! Like many sewers in the community, I am addicted to collecting fabrics and finding fabrics that are unique, regardless of I actually need them or not. Fun textures and colors make me happy. As you can see from my recent works, I have been enamored with kimono fabrics recently. So the idea of traditional dye from this context also attracted me. Traditional craftsmanship is often forgotten or easily dismissed in Japan. With the aging population of skilled crafters, these techniques are slowly dying. I hope to be able to present their work in a way that is accessible to a younger generation!

At her gallery in Kumamoto.

Originally, I applied with Brazilian style panties using Akemi’s fabric. But, after talking to her and her associate at her gallery, we decided to make wrap dresses and drawstring bags as well. Below is a sample.

They will be sold at a department store in Kumamoto, called Tsuruya Hyakkaten, as well as at creema’s event at Tokyo Bigsight.

What also thrilled me about this opportunity was to be able to travel! It has been a long time since I got on an airplane. Even though it was a domestic trip, I was thrilled being able to see a different part of Japan. Kumamoto has a mascot which represents the prefecture… named Kumamon. It’s a bear. Kumamoto’s “Kuma” means bear in Japanese. I got to taste Kumamon shochu drink, raw horse meat(!), and manjyu called “Bikkuri Manjyu”, where there is steamed sweet potato and red bean paste inside. Yummy!

What I Made – October

October 12, 2021 By Chie

October is here! Although I share my creations daily on my instagram stories, I thought it would be nice to write a proper blog post as a wrap up of what I made.

Pouches as gift

This is a great way to use small scraps and as the Holiday season quickly approaches, I can see myself making more and more of these pouches! I usually put some small goodies inside when I give them as a gift. Depending on who I give one to I’ll add things like snacks, nail polish or socks.

三角ポーチ 帯
Triangle shaped pouch, which will be available at Kimono Revival pop up shop in Osaka on 10/17.
着物帯を使った化粧ポーチ
With the same bubble gum pink color obi, I made a square pouch for a friend for a birthday. Perfect to put some cosmetic items and small jewelreis like these gold rings!
蛙柄 小学生ポーチ テッシュ入れ
These are for children, to put some kids’ essentials like hand towels, bandaids and tissue. The frog character comes from a children’s book called “999ひきのきょうだい“.

Uchikake dresses

I have been upcycling used kimonos for a while, but this summer, I had a few opportunities to use a different type of kimono called Uchikake. Uchikake is a highly formal kimono worn only by brides or at a stage performances. Now that many weddings in Japan have become westernized, you will see fewer brides wearing Uchikake. The Uchikake is often heavily brocaded. You can just think of it as a special type of kimono, made of obi type fabric. It’s heavy and has a full of texture. It makes a great dress for special occasions, like beauty contests, black tie events or musical performances.

I fund this bright red uchikake kimono at a local kimono shop and even haggled with a shop owner! This dress will be displayed at my next exhibition, starting on 10/30 at Nikko Hotel in Daiba. More info here.

Polyester kimono dresses

In the summer, a very generous person contacted me to donate some their kimonos. Apparently they used to be used as rentals, but due to a change in the business, they were no longer needed. They were contemporary kimono made with polyester material. Although I enjoy the luxury feel of silk 100% kimonos, for a daily use, polyester kimonos are perfect! You can wash them in a washing machine and are, in general, very easy to care for. Here are a few dresses and jumpsuit I made using the donated kimonos.
