DIY Washi Tape Diamond Wall

November 18, 2013 By Chie

before after of diamond wallI wanted to share with you the little decor DIY I did the other day. I get so many useful, practical ideas from Pinterest. It is sometimes overwhelming. This washi tape diamond wall was on my list for a while. I thought it was a perfect project for a renter like me. I also liked this stripped wall and neon pink random lines, but as a first project, I decided to go for a simple diamond for this small kitchen/dining area.

Here are some “in progress pictures”. On the left, can you see that the lines are not perfectly perpendicular? the “simple diamond” didn’t turn out to be so simple for a beginner. On first try I attached the washi tape using rulers (24cm width apart), but after a few lines were completed, I looked at them from a distance, and they look completely juvenile. I took a break, calmed down, took off the tape and started over again. The great thing about washi tape is that it is very easily removable. For my second try, I used a canvas (used for this art project here), and that helped. I was able to get the lines perpendicular to each other.in progress of diamond walldiamond wall after1diamond wall after2 diamond wall

I used 4 rolls of gray washi tape. I have another black and white patterned tape, so I decorated the mirror with it and attached it to the wall for more source of lighting. Our first floor kitchen/dining area is dark, so anything to add brightness to the space is a plus.

I made those pillow case covers too! Do you recognize the fabrics (stripes and blue picture print)?

Lastly, based on this tutorial, I decorated my light switch plates. I love this little DIY. I think patterned washi tapes work the best for small spaces like light switch plates. decorated switch plateChieSignature

Faux Leather Top

November 15, 2013 By Chie

faux leather top still1Faux leather top, Tory Burch cardigan (similar), Oiajules bracelet, U/O jeans and Rag & Bone booties.

I’ve been spending a lot of my train sitting time on reading up on design blogs like little green notebook, MADE BY GIRL, and small shop blog. Since we moved into a new place at the end of Summer, we are in the process of reorganizing and redecorating our space. From reading these design blogs, I’ve learned the importance of mixing textures. Instead of using one texture through out the room, you mix rug, wood, metal, glass etc to add depth. The same thing can be said for fashion as well. It is so much more interesting to have different textures mixed and matched.

This faux leather top is my favorite for two reasons – one is that it is not black but navy blue. We all tend to gravitate towards black in the colder season, right? Navy blue is a nice change. Number two reason is that it is sleeveless so you can wear it on its own, turtle neck inside or cardigan on top. faux leather top4 faux leather top still2 faux leather top vivat veritas

Mommy’s Diary: Watercolor on canvas

November 14, 2013 By Chie

mommy's diarykids art by vivat veritasAfter reading this post about incorporating kids’ art into your home, I could not resist tackling this kid’s painting project. The post has many great tips on displaying kids arts in stylish way. I picked up some canvas at an arts & craft shop for 3 bucks each, and water color paint set from 100 yen shop. I layed news paper underneath the supplies and let Kiko just have fun with it! She had a great time mixing the paints, watering it down with water and using the brushes. Even more, she was thrilled when she saw her “art” hung on the dining room wall. She was so proud.

I have another small canvas, which I want her “abstract art” in pink and gold. Time to pick up more paints! kids art by vivat veritas4 kids art by vivat veritas3 kids art by vivat veritas6 kids art by vivat veritas5 kids art by vivat veritas7kids art by vivat veritas2

The lining of a kimono — often discarded when the fabric is remade into something new.
That soft, lightweight silk felt too good to let go, so I turned it into a summer dress. It needed something more, so I asked artist Riko Monma to dye it for me — and suddenly it came alive again.

I made this piece a few years ago, but for the recent event with @designerhelena, I decided to bring it into the collection. Helen gave me so much guidance on color — combinations I never would have arrived at on my own. The whole preparation process was just really, really fun😌

Cafés do Brasil — the stamp from its days carrying beans stays right there on the back.

Kimono fabric has always been at the heart of what I do, but I want to bring in more materials with a history — things that have traveled, carried weight, meant something before they became a garment.

A butterfly doesn’t transform alone.

Someone sews, and a shape is born.
Someone paints, and light finds a face.
Someone adorns, and a story stirs beside the ear.

Each gesture layered upon the next —
until one garment spreads its wings on the runway🦋

To everyone who was part of this show 💌

Before the doors opened, there was this. Garments Before the doors opened, there was this.

Garments waiting on the rack. Brushes in hand. Quiet conversations in corners. The unhurried moment before everything becomes a show.

""Released. Reimagined."" with @designerhelen was made possible by so many generous hands — our makeup and hair team, our models, every person who showed up early and stayed late. Thank you for caring for these pieces, and for each other, the way you did.

More to come🤍

Reimagined."" は、たくさんの方々の手によって生まれました。 メイク・ヘアチームのみなさん、モデルのみなさん、早くから駆けつけて最後まで残ってくれたすべての方へ。 本当にありがとうございました。
次回も頑張ります🤍

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Released. Reimagined.

It took quite a bit of wandering to find this venue. Tucked just off a quiet side street from Harajuku’s Takeshita Exit — full glass frontage, light pouring in. The moment I stepped inside, I knew🌱

Right at the entrance, @brownie_shots will be running a pop-up☕︎ The central space becomes our runway. VIP seating going in now.

Less than one week to go. Fingers crossed for sunshine ☀️
