Mommy’s Diary: Looking Ahead

September 30, 2014 By Chie

20140420-kiko1

It’s been a while since I wrote mommy’s diary last, but I could not help putting up a post after finding these photo of my daughter taken six months ago. The photos had been waiting to be edited and saved in the hard drive but somehow got lost in the midst of busy days.

We just came back from our 10-day vacation in the U.S. That was the fastest 10 days of my life! It literally flew. I was glad that Kiko was able to meet with her daddy’s side of the family. She spent time with her gam gam (grandma), grandpa and great grand mother. In fact, I barely saw her during the trip because she was always with them.

After the trip, all of the sudden she looks grown up – talking in longer sentences, explaining her reasoning behind her actions (saying “because….”) and looking taller. With the amount of time she spends with Andy (Andy is very involved with the child raising), I thought she would be very much a tom boy, but she, for now, is super feminine. She loves doing her nails with me, playing with beads to make necklaces and braiding strings whenever she finds one long enough . I’m really enjoying having a girl.

Some of you had asked how our adoption process has been going. We are still waiting for a child. It has been two and a half years since we got approved by the adoption agency. We hope that the child will come sometime soon and are willing to wait as long as it takes!

On the bright side, we started to foster a child through a program called “friend home”. There are many kids in group home that are neither adoptable or foster careable in Japan. This blog by Sophelia explains well about the adoption situation in Japan, so I won’t go into the details, but to sum it up, the parental rights in Japanese laws are very strong, which makes it difficult to have kids up for adoption or foster care.

So for the kids who cannot be adopted or foster cared because the parents’ unwillingness to give up the parental rights, Tokyo has a program “friend home” where the kids get to experience home life by visiting certain family on regular bases for a day out or sleep over. We registered with the program last year and finally got referred to a child who will be staying with us once a month. Both my husband and I are very excited and it will be great for Kiko to have another child she can care for.

Mommy’s Diary: Foster Care Update

January 25, 2013 By Chie

mommy's diary

kiko green house pic

I completely forgot to write an update on our foster care and adoption progress. A lot has on gone one recently. If you are new to this blog, here is my past posts on foster care and adoption.

First of all, we have been approved as foster parents! We got approved last November. I should have written about this earlier, but there are some reasons why we were not overly excited. Yes, we are approved officially, but the child guidance center told us they wouldn’t give us any kids to foster until Kiko turns three. Kiko is 21 months old now, so we have more than a year before they even consider us as candidates. On top of that, they require the follow-up “training”; 10 days of  training in three months! I really fought to get out of the training, because the rule book says that foster parents with biological children are exempt of this training. We have Kiko so we should not have to go through the additional training, but the child guidance center decided that we need it because “Kiko is too young” and we are not experienced enough as parents. Sigh.

I found this extremely unfair. Foster parents with biological children who are in middle school do not have to go though the long training days. Why? Because they are more experienced! In some sense, perhaps you can say so but considering this training consists of 10 full days of diaper changing and feeding newborns less than a year old, I believe I should be exempt of this. I still change diapers everyday.

On top of that, they want us to schedule 10 full days within three months, because of the insurance they have to buy while we are in training. The social worker at the Child guidance center and I literally went back and forth negotiating the details of this training for an entire month. Neither Andy nor I can do 10 days in three months, together. We have Kiko, work, church and other responsibilities to take care of, and we would have to find some baby sitter for Kiko while we are in training.

After many phone calls, both parties agreed that we do one training per month for over the 10-month period. This makes sense, considering that we won’t be considered as working foster parents until Kiko turns three. Also the length of time were reduced to just morning instead of full days.

I would have been more excited about the training if it is somehow beneficial or if I could spend some quality time with the children but in reality operating under the irritating gaze of our trainers destroys any redeeming aspect to these 10 days. It’s a shame to because Andy and I had both planned to volunteer at the orphanage but with the way the “senpai” handle the system it makes it very difficult to get excited about this process We’ve done two trainings so far, and all we did was to sit and hold babies all while being told that these babies were “broken babies not like normal children”.

I understand that they need some kind of training for hopeful foster parents. But I wish it be meaningful and beneficial at least. What do you think? How would you improve the training program if it were you?

The Unexpected Side Benefits

September 21, 2012 By Chie

Adoption/Foster care update:
In addition to the group courses, we had four home visits and two sessions for psychological evaluations for foster care and adoption registration respectively. All of them went well, but what pleasantly surprised me was the benefits they had on my relationship with Andy.  We were asked many questions during these sessions. The topics included our reasons for adoption/foster care, how we met, how many kids we want in total, what is our take on disciplining children, how we plan on caring for Kiko after a new child comes into our life, whether we drink, what we like about each other, what we don’t like about each other… There were more questions, and I don’t remember what they were, but I was glad that Andy and I had previously talked about all the questions they asked us. Also, by answering the questions and verbalizing my thoughts, it made me reminisce and adore the memories of the time I first met Andy, getting engaged and married. It made me realize that I married the love of my life and now we are trying to build a family together. It made me really happy!
