Japanese Sewing Books:: Feminine Wardrobe and Sweet Dress Book

October 18, 2013 By Chie

japanese books by vivat veritas

Andy’s grandmother surprised me with these two new Japanese sewing books (translated in English) the other day. They are Feminine Wardrobe (much detailed review here) and Sweet Dress Book. I did not request these particular books to grandma, so I am astounded by her good selections. As many Japanese sewing books, the styling of these books are minimalistic and quiet yet very pretty. I find Japanese sewing patterns to be less fitted and in baggier silhouette than I want my clothes to be, but they are pretty to look at. Here are some of my favorites from the books:japanese sewing book feminine wardrobe1 ll vivat veritas

A blouse with big bow, can be worn it in two ways.

Asymmetric skirt with bold floral print. I love the fabric more than anything here.

I’ve seen layered sleeves like this in BCBG SS14 runway. I am not big fan of the fit of the blouse here, but there is a possibility with these layered sleeves. japanese sewing book feminine wardrobe4 ll vivat veritas Love the fact that there is a cupcake recipe randomly placed in the middle of the book! So cute.

Made:: Drape Drape 3 Inspired Grecian Dress

August 16, 2013 By Chie

gracian dress1{Self-made Grecian dress, thrifted sandals, Alexander Wang clutch, H&M earrings, Gorjana necklace and bracelet, Oia Jules bracelet}

A few weeks ago, my sister got married. The wedding was wonderful. To be honest, I don’t always enjoy going to weddings, especially because it is expensive to attend (you have to bring at least 300 USD as a gift, plus additional after-party cost and transportation), but my sister’s wedding was truly special. She met her husband, got engaged and married within 9 months. I am so happy for them! As always, I was working on the dress to wear to the wedding up til the the night before. I have to stop being so last minute, but I couldn’t help it. Usually I go for more structured dresses like skater dress with fitted top or this Chasing the Waterfall dress, but this time I wanted something different. I bought this lavender jersey at blogger meet-up in Nippori, and was anxious to use it for something drapy and loose. The side drape on skirt was done using the pattern no.10 from Drape Drape 3 book from Hisako Sato. I bought this book about a year and a half ago, and had been wanting to make something from it. The biggest reason why it took me so long to actually make something from the book was because of the patterns. Since many of the patterns in the book are not supposed to cut on fold, each pattern is gigantic (check out this Instagram photo!). Also the pleating on the pattern was terribly confusing; it took me good three hours to figure out how to put it together.

I got tired by the time I finished the side drape, so I decided to do the rest on the flow. I just cut out fabric pieces and tucked here and draped there, and finished the waist with elastic for comfort. grecian dress close up Since I have no breasts to support the V neckline, I had to use double sided tapes to keep the shoulder and neckline. I really liked the back V line and the loose fitting silhouette goes well with my delicate gold jewelry. Sadly, Andy was not a big fan of this dress, as he said it looks like I’m wearing a garbage bag. 009DSC_0166 copy DSC_0168 copyMy sister made a beautiful bride…yumi weddingfamily photo2ChieSignature

Book Review: Over 100 Years of Style by Decade and Designer, in Association With Vogue

June 26, 2013 By Chie

Rina again! How have you all been?

Today iI’ll be introducing you to an interesting book, Vogue Fashion: Over 100 Years of Style by Decade and Designer, in Association With Vogue. I’m reading this at the moment.

20130624 Photo1

This book is written about the fashion history decade by decade. I enjoyed reading about how fashion has been influenced by historical events and changed with well-known designers. It shows featured style trends with a lot of beautiful photographs. In reading this book you begin to notice fashion is a kind of back-and-forth. Some 1910’s photos come off as really “fresh” and new. This book does not attempt to be an authoritative history or reference book, but you can look over transitions in the fashion world and come away with a good sense of what has gone over the last century. If nothing else you can flip through the stunning photos.

This book says the fashion trends have power. It has power to such an extent that sometimes it can change our way of thinking or our life style. But Vogue also says that “trend” and “style” are totally different. People who have “style” both can accept a trend or ignore it. They never try to follow it. They would choose it if they want.

It seems that “style” is beauty on the inside, and it brings out your charm. But it would be also true that sophisticated trend fashions give you a sense of confidence, and thus make you beautiful on the inside….just a thought. Anyway, it’s kinda fun for me to think about fashion as a concept 🙂
