Karada Dakara – Dance Event

December 3, 2012 By Chie

I’m so excited to announce that a dance team I designed costumes for is having their performance this weekend, and I made their costumes! They are having 4 shows in total on 12/8 and 12/9. I will be at the 7pm show on 12/8, if you are in Tokyo and interested in coming out, please feel free to contact me at vivatveritasshop@gmail.com! The ticket costs $3,500 at the door.

It was a lot of work bringing the design that the dancer had in mind into real life, due to her need for movability and comfort, and its stage presence. The pictures above only shows the white dress, but I made some with an overskirt in red, purple and navy on top of the dresses. I made seven overskirts in one day, and didn’t have time to photograph them:(

Below is excerpt from Asahi Art Square, where the performance is.

Mommy’s Diary: Cat Halloween Costume McCall M6383

November 8, 2012 By Chie

I had a lot of fun making this cat costume for Kiko. Last year, I made her a bee costume along with a tulip head piece for Andy. The cat pattern is from McCall, M6383. Zhing from Little Project in Style gave me this last year, and I’m happy that I finally got to use it. I cut the smallest pattern. It turned out a little big for Kiko, but I think it’s supposed to fit not too tight to the body. I don’t know how this fabric I used is called; my mother got it for me for some other project I never had a chance to get to. I would not say it was the easiest fabric to work with because it’s thick and produces a lot of fuzz, but it’s very soft and warm. The lining is cotton polkadot fabric.

The sewing of this costume went pretty quick and smooth. I think it took about 3 hours in total. The pattern instructions were clear and easy to follow.

Unfortunately, Kiko wasn’t all so thrilled with this cat costume. I don’t know what her problem was, but she hated to be put in it. I could not take any pictures of her smiling in this costume..

We went trick or treating. It was fun! She had her first lollipop, and it was funny to see her being confused because she did not know how to eat it. Once she found out how to eat it she was crazy about it..

Forest Fairy Halloween Costume

October 31, 2012 By Chie

I was undecided whether to post this project, because Andy constantly made fun of me for wanting to dress up for Halloween. Andy is not a big fan of Halloween, or any holidays at all in fact. But we had a party to go to on Halloween weekend, and I needed something to wear. I forgot how I ended up with a fairy, and am a bit embarrassed by it since I’m almost 30, wanting to dress up as a…fairy.

Anyway, at first I wanted to make a Tinkerbell costume, but as I made progress with sewing, it did not look like a Tinkerbell costume. First of all the fabric was wrong. I was too cheap to buy one of those shiny costumy fabric, so I ended up using a home dec fabric..the same one that I used to make for our bedroom curtains. By the way, this fabric is just a terrible synthetic, and when I ironed it smelt terrible. You know, I don’t know about you but I just assumed that I can whip out a costume in a few hours because I can sew women’s clothes. It was disappointing to realize it was not the case, and sewing a costume is a totally different story. My costume kind of turned out to be the same as the rest of my dresses, and lacked drama. It reminded me of one season of the Project Runway…I forgot his name, but he was a costume designer before he was on Project Runway, and although he might have been a great costume designer, he wasn’t a good woman’s clothes designer at all because everything he made was just so dramatic.

So I was irritated that this did not turn out like I imagined, and on top of it Andy gave me his honest opinion as always and reminded me that it looks like “just one of your dresses”.

Well, I shouldn’t have been so surprised to hear his comment because I did use one of my dress patterns (same as this). I added the “leaves” to skirt part, and inserted a wire so that it creates some movement. The fairy wings were made based on this tutorial, using two wire clothes hangers, pantie hose, and spray paint.

As opposed to my costume, Kiko’s costume turned out well! Because I used a costume pattern! I’ll post about it soon. Did you dress up for Halloween? Do you feel as silly as me for dressing up as an adult?

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Released. Reimagined.

It took quite a bit of wandering to find this venue. Tucked just off a quiet side street from Harajuku’s Takeshita Exit — full glass frontage, light pouring in. The moment I stepped inside, I knew🌱

Right at the entrance, @brownie_shots will be running a pop-up☕︎ The central space becomes our runway. VIP seating going in now.

Less than one week to go. Fingers crossed for sunshine ☀️

It’s May — and yet, fall hues🍂

Warm enough to break a sweat by noon,
then a cool breeze sneaks in by evening🌬️

I kind of love that about this time of year♡

Rich amber and terracotta.
Something about spring light makes these autumn tones look even more beautiful✨

For those cool mornings and evenings,
a silk haori is just right.
