Mommy’s Diary: Rainy Day Activity

What do you do with your kids on rainy days? I have the biggest struggle of my parenting life finding things to do on rainy days for Kiko. Today was one of those days. It was cold and rainy out, and I was tired after work. I know Kiko likes to go to the community center to play with other kids and it is indoors, but sometimes I just am not in the mood for sitting there and watching her play, or worse, if she happens to want to exclusively play with me rather than playing with other kids..what’s the point of taking her to the community center!

Anyway, instead of the community center, we baked today. It was a lot of fun! We made banana muffins, and I used an easy recipe I found online that uses pancake mix, so I was able to skip the baking powder and flower mixture part.

Kiko “helped” a lot, from peeling the banana skin, stirring the dough, bringing the dishes to the sink and finally, helping with cleaning the bowl.

I wish my story ends here. It was all fun until then, but eventually I had to ask her to give the bowl back to me so we could move on to the next activity. I thought I gave her enough time. I talked with her, that she spent enough time licking the bowl and I wanted her to give the bowl back. She eventually gave it back to me, but with a whine and cry. Oh that wasn’t fun. I feel like it ruined all the fun time we had baking together. How would you deal with this kind of situation?

Mommy’s Diary: Crayons

A few months ago, my sister, who works for a PR company, asked me to take photos of Kiko drawing. She was representing a company who makes these tear drop shaped crayons for kids. She was writing up a press release for the new crayons, but the company didn’t have any pictures to go with it. She volunteered Kiko to be the model and for me to be the photographer (of course without my knowledge or agreement), and I had one day to shoot photos of Kiko drawing.

 

In the photos, Kiko seems she is enjoying herself drawing, right? Unfortunately in reality was not as easy as that. She is really not into drawing or coloring at all. I wish she was a kind of girl who sat on her chair politely and colored for hours, but in reality, she is much more of a tomboy, who likes to wrestle with Andy and runs around in the park. Andy teaches her how to “roll”(play brazillian jiu jitsu), so she asks him to “tackle”, “horse” and “roll”. It is so cute!

Mommy’s Diary: What to Bring for a Long Flight with Toddler

mommy's diarywhat to take for a long flight by vivat veritas 630 This week we took our first trip from Japan to Andy’s hometown, NY – 12 hour flight with Kiko. It was really a nerve racking event since our first flight with Kiko didn’t go all that well. I wrote more about it here, if you are interested, check it out 🙂 Here is a list of things we packed for our flight:

1. Two extra set of clothes. I didn’t think I would need two sets, but I ended up needing them both. My daughter threw up twice during the flight while watching TV, so I was glad I packed these.

2. New toys and snacks to occupy the child. It’s better to be over prepared than under prepared.

3. Eye mask. This was surprisingly helpful. I didn’t realize how bright it was on the plane while they are serving meals. Kiko was asleep when the light was on, and it was helpful to have something to cover her eyes. She resisted wearing the mask at first, but eventually she got used to it. Also having her favorite stuffed animal had helped her relax.

4. Extra diapers and wipes. Same as #1, you never know what will happen. Kids have amazing timing. Kiko has a very regular schedule…except for this day My daughter pooped twice on the plane, so having spare diapers on hand was so helpful. I packed 10 diapers and 1 pack of diaper wipes.

5. Gummy candies to for ear discomfort during take off/landing. I gave them to her in the beginning and end of the flight and she did not cry at all during those times.

But honestly, the most helpful item we used was a little bit of Benadryl. I feel a bit embarrassed to admit that we used Benadryl, but it really helped her to sleep better during the flight. She slept 8 hours our of 12 hour flight. I’ve heard that some kids become hyper with Benadryl, so we “tested” it when Kiko was sick to make sure that she reacts ok to the medicine.
