Sewing the Pink Coat:: Fabric and Patterns

November 23, 2013 By Chie

brush rose wool fabricI went to Nippori fabric district the other day and bought this pretty salmon pink (or blush rose) wool for a mere 300 yen per meter. I bought three meters of it. Such a score! I forgot the name of the store as it was new. I had not been back to Nippori since the bloggers meetup back in August, and there were some changes. One of my favorite shops, Zakzak (wrote about the shop here)closed one of their stores (the bigger garage one, which I preferred), and there were a few new shops. I’m sad about zakzak’s closure. They were dirt cheap, so maybe they were not making enough profit.

Anyway, as I bought this pink wool, I started to think about sewing a winter coat. To be honest, I hate winter. I hate cold. I hope wearing a cheerful color like this pink will help me get through the miserable winter. I made a teal color coat last winter, so I wanted to make something with a statement color this year as well.

For a coat pattern, I browsed through burdastyle’s coat library – I have a love and hate relationship with BurdaStyle patterns. I hate printing out the patterns and taping them together but I love the instant download. I keep going back there because their patterns are reasonable and I can get it right away.

I ended up purchasing Wool Long Coat 08/2012#101B. I see this kind of oversized, long coat with lapels all over the place here this winter. I posted one from a Japanese magazine, Vivi on instagram. They call it “Chester coat (チェスターコート)” over here. I wonder what they call in real English-speaking countries.

Here are some images from my moodboard – I’m deciding whether to shorten the length of the coat to about thigh length, or keep it around the knees. For practical purpose, it would be better to keep it long, but I’m not sure how I would look with oversized, long coat since I’m not that tall. Any thoughts?

Organizing Sewing Place

November 9, 2013 By Chie

sewing supply organizationSewing place organizing is stuck with every sewing person. It’s hard to stop increasing sewing supplies if you love sewing. These supplies are easily messed up while sewing. I’m sometimes surprised at the cluttered room when I finish making a garment. It seems I don’t really like to put notions back into their original place…

This basket is my favorite! I throw frequently used notions in the basket. Pins and pincushion, thread scissors, measure, stiletto… anything I need. I don’t have to open and close a drawer, and am able to make a stitch everywhere I’d like to with the basket.

paper box organization

I made a small Origami box. I always set the box next to the sewing machine, and throw out lint and remnant in it, so that I don’t have to keep a trash box closer all of the time.

threads organization by rina for vivat veritas

It also annoys me to look for matching bobbin thread. So I got rolled paper into sewing yarn and matched bobbin thread.

Japanese Sewing Books:: Feminine Wardrobe and Sweet Dress Book

October 18, 2013 By Chie

japanese books by vivat veritas

Andy’s grandmother surprised me with these two new Japanese sewing books (translated in English) the other day. They are Feminine Wardrobe (much detailed review here) and Sweet Dress Book. I did not request these particular books to grandma, so I am astounded by her good selections. As many Japanese sewing books, the styling of these books are minimalistic and quiet yet very pretty. I find Japanese sewing patterns to be less fitted and in baggier silhouette than I want my clothes to be, but they are pretty to look at. Here are some of my favorites from the books:japanese sewing book feminine wardrobe1 ll vivat veritas

A blouse with big bow, can be worn it in two ways.

Asymmetric skirt with bold floral print. I love the fabric more than anything here.

I’ve seen layered sleeves like this in BCBG SS14 runway. I am not big fan of the fit of the blouse here, but there is a possibility with these layered sleeves. japanese sewing book feminine wardrobe4 ll vivat veritas Love the fact that there is a cupcake recipe randomly placed in the middle of the book! So cute.

Something I've been building since 2008 — taking k Something I've been building since 2008 — taking kimono fabric, fabric that already holds someone's memory, and giving it a new life.

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Thank you to everyone who came🤍

Released. Reimagined.

It took quite a bit of wandering to find this venue. Tucked just off a quiet side street from Harajuku’s Takeshita Exit — full glass frontage, light pouring in. The moment I stepped inside, I knew🌱

Right at the entrance, @brownie_shots will be running a pop-up☕︎ The central space becomes our runway. VIP seating going in now.

Less than one week to go. Fingers crossed for sunshine ☀️

It’s May — and yet, fall hues🍂

Warm enough to break a sweat by noon,
then a cool breeze sneaks in by evening🌬️

I kind of love that about this time of year♡

Rich amber and terracotta.
Something about spring light makes these autumn tones look even more beautiful✨

For those cool mornings and evenings,
a silk haori is just right.

I want to make clothes you reach for on purpose — not just whatever’s closest🦋✂️

Took apart a vintage sheer silk kimono and sewed it back into something new.

The loose, airy weave of summer, with a single trim of white lace.

For the days when you want to feel pretty — just not too precious.
