Before & After | Cocktail Dress to Pleated Skirt

February 17, 2015 By Chie

Before and After of Dress to Pleated Skirt DIY Vivat Veritas2After reading about Wardrobe Rehab over at a pair & a spare, I try to review my closet every few months to get rid of clothes that I don’t wear by donating them to thrift shops. Although I made this a regular practice, there are some items that I neglected to part with even though I don’t wear them at all. This cocktail dress is one of those items. I do have an emotional attachment to this dress as this was the dress I wore to my engagement party nine years ago. After that, I wore this once for a work party, but not since. Since I bought the dress nine years ago, now being 30, I feel like this dress is too young for me.Before and After of Dress to Pleated Skirt DIY Vivat VeritasInstead of getting rid of the dress all together, I upcycled it by making it into a knee length skirt.

Here is how:

You need:
1. babydoll style dress with pleated skirt (stretch material)
2. 2″ wide elastic band cut in your waist length + 1″ for seam allowance

Cocktail dress to pleated skirt DIY1It was a baby doll style dress, so first I cut off the top part. Sorry for all the white fuzz in the pictures! Right before this DIY, I was working on a white fur… I made a tissue case cover.

Cocktail dress to pleated skirt DIY2

Sew the elastic band and attach it to the skirt you just cut. Since the skirt waist was bigger than my elastic, I stretched the elastic as I sewed it onto the skirt. Cocktail dress to pleated skirt DIY3

Cut two satin ribbons so you can attach it to the inside of skirt waist. This is so that you can hang the skirt on a hanger to store.

All done! Brad new pleated skirt that works in winter with tights and spring! Cocktail dress to pleated skirt DIY5DIY-dress-to-pleated-skirt-

DIY:: Lace Shorts

June 2, 2014 By Chie

DIY lace shorts by vivat veritasI’m revamping my wardrobe by taking the old clothes and turning them into something that I actually wear. I would not say that I have a huge collection of clothes, but I do have one closet full of clothes. I recently noticed that I only wear a handful of them on regular basis. Other stuff is clothes that I really like but not wear so much, so I am tackling one by one to refashion them.

First up was the 90’s dress from my previous post. The second one is the old pair of jeans. They fit me fine, but did not have enough stretch, so wearing them for a long time was uncomfortable. I decided to make them into jean shorts (great video tutorial on how to distress it here), but failed because I did not consider the fact that my jeans were skinny jeans. If you try to make a jean cut-off by chopping off your skinny jeans, they turn out a little funny. They are too fitted and weirdly shaped. I did not want to give up on them, so I went to Pinterest to find some solution. I saw this pin, adding a lace fabric to the side to expand the size a bit and thought that would work for my shorts! DIY lace shorts by vivat veritas2

My lace is from Nakamura, the online shop in Japan. I wrote a review of their shop here. They have so many options for lovely lace pieces.

{Outfit details: Shirt – Nasty Gal, Shorts – Self made, Purse – 3.1 Philip Lim, Slip on -got them for 2000 yen (20 dollars) from here, Necklace – Moose and Nigel}shorts3DIY lace shorts by vivat veritas3

It has been unexceptionally hot here. I was wearing jeans earlier in the day, but they got drenched in sweat while I was walking around, so I had to switch them to these shorts. I love how my old jeans now have a purpose beyond just existing in my closet!

DIY Lace Insert T-shirt

February 23, 2013 By Chie

lace insert tshirt diy before and afterGrowing up, I was never a t-shirt and jeans kind of girl. I always preferred dresses, cardigans and sweaters. There are times when I would not have a single t-shirt in my closet, save the smelly ones i use for my workout. But after having Kiko, I am tending toward having more and more comfy clothes that are easy to clean. But the girly part of me can’t stand turning t-shirts into a regular part of my wardrobe. But i did find this little way to bring up the acceptableness (real word?) of the comfy top. I love this little DIY lace insert to personalize any t-shirt you have.

after diy lace insert tshirt 1I bought this Minnie t-shirt at 390 mart (everything in the store is 390 yen(about 4 bucks)! ). Although the t-shirt was perfectly acceptable as a workout wear, it lacked some femininity and breath-ability since the neckline was a bit too tight. I widen the front neckline and added a back lace insert. Here is how:what you need for lace insert diy

step1 lace insert diy adjust the necklineI wore the t-shirt in front of the mirror and marked the new neckline with a tailor’s chalk. step2 lace insert diy wider necklinestep3 lace insert diy save the ribstep4 lace insert diy decide where the lace goes

This is where you can be creative! I just did a deep U-line shape, but it could be V, star, heart, etc. step5 lace insert diy back necklinestep6 back lace panelstep7 attach lace and finish the front necklinestep7 backview Tada!sleeve alterations

If you want, you can fold up the sleeves and sew the top and bottom edges to change things up a bit!after diy lace insert tshirt 2 minnie tshirt diy after photosChieSignature

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Released. Reimagined.

It took quite a bit of wandering to find this venue. Tucked just off a quiet side street from Harajuku’s Takeshita Exit — full glass frontage, light pouring in. The moment I stepped inside, I knew🌱

Right at the entrance, @brownie_shots will be running a pop-up☕︎ The central space becomes our runway. VIP seating going in now.

Less than one week to go. Fingers crossed for sunshine ☀️

It’s May — and yet, fall hues🍂

Warm enough to break a sweat by noon,
then a cool breeze sneaks in by evening🌬️

I kind of love that about this time of year♡

Rich amber and terracotta.
Something about spring light makes these autumn tones look even more beautiful✨

For those cool mornings and evenings,
a silk haori is just right.
