Mommy’s Diary 18

August 25, 2011 By Chie

So, last week I wrote about my sadly significant hair loss since child birth. It seems that I am not the only one with this problem…Andy is fine but Kiko is loosing her hair along with me! She did not have much hair in the first place (I guess lot of white babies don’t, as oppose to Asian babies, who are born with a full head of hair!). She has lost hair such that her hair now makes a big M shape. The bald space on her head is getting more and more pronounced. I’m not sure if it’s because her head is growing, or she if is shedding like me. Anyone know?

You might be wondering why Kiko is dressed like a snowman in the pictures even though it’s a hot and humid August here in Japan. We had a surprisingly chilly few days last week. So I dressed her up in a cute jumper with tights, matching cardigan and hat. I bought these at a thrift store while I was in Philly last year. Back then I bought these thinking I was having a boy. I love being a mom of a baby girl, it is so much fun to dress her up like a doll :p

We started feeding Kiko rice porridge this week. We serve it to her once a day before her milk. I am feeding her about two table spoons of this mush. She takes it, but gives me this face as if to say “why are you feeding me such a terrible thing?!” Her facial expression is priceless!

I’m continually amazed by her growth. Something beyond her ability to do one day, becomes something she can easily do the next day. For example, she has an elephant mobile above her crib. She used to yell at the elephants getting frustrated because she couldn’t touch them and make them move like Andy and I are able to do for her. But overnight she became able to grab the elephants, rip them off the mobile ( the elephant heads are connected to a plastic pole with velcro tape), sing to them, then squeeze and lick them.

As of this week, she has really started enjoying her toys. Of all the toys, her favorite toy is a plastic bag though! I guess she likes the sound it makes when she crumples it.

As I write this I can remember just a few short months ago when I first brought Kiko home. A week or so after birth, I was driving and burst into tears. That day, Andy sent me out to the post office to ship some packages. While driving, I was listening to Usher’s “U Got it Bad” and all of a sudden I started to ball, the feeling was just so overwhelming…I can’t really describe it. I thought to myself, “I am caring for such a small, precious thing” I was (and continue to be) super worried because my mind filled with “what if” questions. What if I’m doing this wrong? What if something happens while Kiko is sleeping? What if she has SIDS and dies all of a sudden?

But as of the 17th of this month, four months have passed and I feel great everyday and have not balled uncontrollably since then. When I see “The Fatness” in the morning  feel that all is well. Of course I am always thinking whether I’m doing certain things right, but I guess that is is just part of motherhood. I’m really enjoying being a mom and can’t wait to bring even more “fatnesses” into the house!

When I was a baby all my hair fell out too (I’m 3/4 white and 1/4 Korean), even my eyebrows! It was red when I was born, but then it fell out and grew back in pale blonde! My mom always tells me that she would wake up everyday and look at me and hope my hair grew back! Don’t worry, I’m sure your baby will have hair again soon! 🙂

Just wanted to say that I’ve really enjoyed reading your mommy diaries. I love to see how she’s growing, and also what you’ve been experiencing in these first months. Now I’ll be prepared for so much more when our little one comes into the world!

That’s funny; I am half Japanese-half white and the same thing happened to me! I was born with a head full of thick, jet black hair, which I ended up losing, and then I grew back finer, medium brown hair after 6+ months. Maybe it’s a mixed Caucasian-Asian thing? I’m not sure. I haven’t really talked about that to any of my other Caucasian-Asian friends, but at any rate, I wouldn’t be too worried about it. I’m sure weird stuff happens during a baby’s growth stage all the time. My brother was born bald, started growing fine, light brown hair, and then later thick, coarse dark brown hair by the time we were in elementary.

wow interesting.. kiko has very fine blond hair, which i dont know where it came from. obviously i have very black hair, and my husband hair is dark as well. his father has dark black hair too, and his mother is dirty blond, but she dyes. so i dont think she will keep this hair color. we’ll see how it turns out 🙂

Babies lose their extra fine baby hair around this time so don’t worry about it, it’ll grow back in. 🙂 Is there a reason you started her on rice cereal so early?

im glad to hear that! it looks kind of bad with a big bold spot on her head though! lol
i dont think starting on rice cereal at 4 months is early. the doctor recommends starting between 4-6 months, and kiko is little over 4 months now:)

my little one, 5months old, seems that she loses her hair even tho she is a 100% japanese.. i think just because her head gets bigger?? dontknow. oh and she’s just got her eyebrows last month. she had almost no hair when she was born. now im worried about MY hair….been losing so much…..
anw your baby is so adorable!!! so dont worry, she should be fine and will be beautiful.
next week, i’ll feed my daughter rice porridge for the first time, im kinda excited.

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Released. Reimagined.

It took quite a bit of wandering to find this venue. Tucked just off a quiet side street from Harajuku’s Takeshita Exit — full glass frontage, light pouring in. The moment I stepped inside, I knew🌱

Right at the entrance, @brownie_shots will be running a pop-up☕︎ The central space becomes our runway. VIP seating going in now.

Less than one week to go. Fingers crossed for sunshine ☀️

Warm enough to break a sweat by noon,
then a cool breeze sneaks in by evening🌬️

I kind of love that about this time of year♡

Rich amber and terracotta.
Something about spring light makes these autumn tones look even more beautiful✨
