Mommy’s Diary 36: Surviving First Sickness

January 5, 2012 By Chie

My baby had been very healthy. No cold, allergies, diaper rash or anything for the past eight months, so when she caught the norovirus right after Christmas, I was caught off guard.  The morning after Christmas, she threw up a lot when she got up. Then she had a couple of diarrhea.  I first thought a food did not sit right with her, perhaps the carrots I fed her the night before was old? (I wasn’t sure when the carrots were bought, since I was at my parents’ place). I checked her temperature and it was normal and she seemed okay. It was not until when she threw up all over the car, that it dawned on me that she got some kind of stomach virus. It was late at night but we took her to a doctor, and it turned out that she got infected with norovirus. The doctor prescribed some medicine and we went home. For the amount she was throwing up, I thought she handled her first sickness very well. Not much whining, just sleeping a lot more than usual. The next day the vomiting stopped and all was well.

On the other hand, I did not handle the sickness very well. I must have gotten infected with the same stomach virus, cleaning after her poop and vomit.  The next morning I started to shiver uncontrollably. I decided to take a bath to calm the shiver and chill, fell asleep in the bath (very dangerous!), but woke up with a sudden urge to throw up. After that I slept about eight hours straight. Thank God Andy was there to watch Kiko. Right when I felt a bit better and started moving around, Andy got infected and he had the same thing.

I can’t imagine what happens to families with more children! If one gets infected, the others will as well like a domino effect? I wonder if there is a good way to stop spreading the virus within the family..

wow i’m glad baby kiko recovered so fast!

i wasn’t so lucky. when my twins caught the stomach virus, both of them were hospitalised and my whole family got infected. i also got my period unexpectedly at the hospital and had to rush out with one of the twins to buy sanitary products! it was quite a bad experience, you can read about it here

last november, they caught the HFMD from school. we were much more prepared this time so none of the adults caught the virus.

the secret to stopping the spread is to keep washing your hands before and after touching the baby 🙂

hope you and your family stays healthy!

Aw that sounds awful! I’m so sorry to hear that. I did not wash my hands bc Kiko threw up in the car while we were on high way. Maybe I should carry a hand sanitizer!

My kids have been in daycare since 1 year old, and every autumn (between October and December) we get hit with a nasty norovirus. The worst was over one Christmas holiday, when all of my family was staying with us. All 9 of us got it, one after another, and then the city turned off the water to repair a burst main! You can only imagine the state of my house. Actually, don’t try to imagine it. I try not to 😉 My daughter was immunized against rotovirus, and she has never caught it as badly as the rest of us. We try to wash hands and all bathroom surfaces as soon as the first person shows symptoms, but it is usually in vain. That virus spreads like wildfire! Just keep lots of fluids in the house and try to ride it out. It is usually over in a day or two.

Just read the post today, and though a lil’ late, I thought I’ll share my 2 cents worth. When my little girl was about 4-5 months old, I was down with a bad case of stomach flu, similar to wht u experienced. At that time, I was breastfeeding her exclusively. As I was throwing up, down with chills… The whole works, I cldn’t possibly take care of her so I enlisted my mom in law to take care n feed the baby. That night, I had ro express my milk and throw it away, its easily contaminated. Thank goodness I had lots of storage in my fridge for the baby. Early next morning, I made sure I showered clean, wear a face mask, and breastfed her. And the toilets, bathroom were all disinfected thoroughly to prevent passing to another family member, worst still to the baby. Anyway, the stomach flu started and ended with me:)

Hi Lisa! Thank you for the comment:)
Glad to hear your family was ok. I was caught off guard by her sudden sickness and didn’t even think off disinfect everything.. We left my parents home without realizing Kiko had a virus, so we got my parents suck too!
I guess now I know to clean well and wash hands for the future!

Just found your blog and I love it! I have two boys in college and I discovered (from a magazine article) when they were younger that cross infection went way down after each of us in the family used our own tube of toothpaste! Really! To this day we rarely get sick from each other. That and washing hands, of course.

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Released. Reimagined.

It took quite a bit of wandering to find this venue. Tucked just off a quiet side street from Harajuku’s Takeshita Exit — full glass frontage, light pouring in. The moment I stepped inside, I knew🌱

Right at the entrance, @brownie_shots will be running a pop-up☕︎ The central space becomes our runway. VIP seating going in now.

Less than one week to go. Fingers crossed for sunshine ☀️

It’s May — and yet, fall hues🍂

Warm enough to break a sweat by noon,
then a cool breeze sneaks in by evening🌬️

I kind of love that about this time of year♡

Rich amber and terracotta.
Something about spring light makes these autumn tones look even more beautiful✨

For those cool mornings and evenings,
a silk haori is just right.

Took apart a vintage sheer silk kimono and sewed it back into something new.

The loose, airy weave of summer, with a single trim of white lace.

For the days when you want to feel pretty — just not too precious.
