Strawberry Dress

June 18, 2012 By Chie

Hello! Today I wanted to show you the dress I made recently for a lovely customer. She chose the tuxedo dress design, but wanted the dress in a strawberry print. After both she and I looked around online for a possible fabric choice, she came up with this pretty print at spoonflower.com. I’ve been on the site in the past, but never ordered from there. I’ve always wanted to try ordering something from the shop, so I was excited that the opportunity finally came. Overall the service was good. It took about two weeks for me to receive the fabric in Japan. I ordered two yards of Kona Cotton. It is a good quality cotton with a bit of stretch and it was very easy to work with. The only complaint I had was that the print was printed off grain. Look.

The picture above was after I pre-washed and pulled the horizontal thread to straighten the grain. You can see that the print was not printed straight; and it is tilted a bit. It is kind of horrifying to think if I’ve gotten some prints that the grain line makes a lot of difference, like plaid or stripes.

Be that as it may, I enjoyed working together with a customer to make her special dress! I’m thinking of making a new listing, called “Build a Dress”, where you can pick your designs from several designs of mine, and fabrics from Spoonflower. What do you think?

This is such a cute dress, Chie!
I’ve also been curious about ordering from spoonflower recently..but perhaps with my own design print. Hopefully that is a one-off with the print off grain, but it makes me think to definitely order a sample piece first..

Lovely dress, shame about the print being off grain, but at least it still looks good.
I think that would be a good idea to ‘build a dress’ it makes it sound personal but without being too daunting if you know what I mean.

Oh wow! This is my fabric design! 😀 I have been reading your blog for a while now and the last time I popped in to chekc out what’s new, I see you made a dress with my Strawberry fabric from Spoonflower! Here it is: http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/719236 I just love the design of this dress. Great job, Chie!

Sorry that the fabric was printed off grain. I will order it to check how they print it once again.

Can I use this picture for my portfolio? I would love to post it on my blog with the link to your website…
    Cheers!

Hi ! I wanted to ask you something 😀 Is the fabric on spoonflower good? ’cause I’ve heard that the prints faded righ away (with the first wash) and things like that, have this happened to you?
    xo

Hi Valentina, I’ve only bought fabric from spoonflower once. I washed once before I used it, and it seemed ok. They have different fabric selections from cotton to silk, so maybe it depends on the fabric content as well.

And what kind of fabric did you buy? 🙂 and now that do bought once, would you do it again?
        thank you 😀

I bought Kona Cotton. It is a medium weight cotton with a bit of stretch. I just ordered another one from spoonflower:)
