VV Wedding:: Soft Tulle Dress and Tuxedo

October 28, 2013 By Chie

It was great to see the customer in the wedding dress I made! I was invited the wedding party of my customer. As I wrote before (here and here) , Chie and I got the chance to produce the bride’s dress and the groom tuxedo.

They looked so awesome in the garments. It is hard to explain how happy I was when I saw the couple together!

They already had an official wedding ceremony a few days ago in Kyoto. They set this party at a restaurant in Tokyo, since they currently live near Tokyo and have many friends there.

Japanese brides usually rent a dress for the wedding ceremony, which is expensive, 2000-4000US dollar on average. It isn’t uncommon that they have to pay additional charge to wear the dress outside of the place of wedding ceremony, because the rental dress makers are sometimes attached to ceremony places.

I don’t really like this kind of Japanese system. I think the wedding style should be more flexible to each bridal couple. So I’ll try to keep making dresses what customers want with fair price.

I hope I could have contributed toward having their happiness (:

Bow and Organza Sash

May 18, 2013 By Chie

bow sash for pregnant brideIvory Bow Sash

Recently, I had the honor to work on a casual wedding dress for a bride who is also pregnant. At the time of her wedding, she will be 20 weeks pregnant. The dress she chose had no stretch, so we decided to make the waist 2″ wider than her actual waist and add a sash to tie around the waist in case the dress is too big on her. It is hard to guess how much your belly grows when you are pregnant. I remember my belly, got visibly bigger after eating big meals, as opposed to when I first woke up in the morning. The bride and I worked on the bow design together and here is what we came up with. I really enjoy working with customers to make custom pieces since it allows me to explore designs that I don’t think of on my own.

Strawberry Dress

June 18, 2012 By Chie

Hello! Today I wanted to show you the dress I made recently for a lovely customer. She chose the tuxedo dress design, but wanted the dress in a strawberry print. After both she and I looked around online for a possible fabric choice, she came up with this pretty print at spoonflower.com. I’ve been on the site in the past, but never ordered from there. I’ve always wanted to try ordering something from the shop, so I was excited that the opportunity finally came. Overall the service was good. It took about two weeks for me to receive the fabric in Japan. I ordered two yards of Kona Cotton. It is a good quality cotton with a bit of stretch and it was very easy to work with. The only complaint I had was that the print was printed off grain. Look.

The picture above was after I pre-washed and pulled the horizontal thread to straighten the grain. You can see that the print was not printed straight; and it is tilted a bit. It is kind of horrifying to think if I’ve gotten some prints that the grain line makes a lot of difference, like plaid or stripes.

Be that as it may, I enjoyed working together with a customer to make her special dress! I’m thinking of making a new listing, called “Build a Dress”, where you can pick your designs from several designs of mine, and fabrics from Spoonflower. What do you think?

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Released. Reimagined.

It took quite a bit of wandering to find this venue. Tucked just off a quiet side street from Harajuku’s Takeshita Exit — full glass frontage, light pouring in. The moment I stepped inside, I knew🌱

Right at the entrance, @brownie_shots will be running a pop-up☕︎ The central space becomes our runway. VIP seating going in now.

Less than one week to go. Fingers crossed for sunshine ☀️

It’s May — and yet, fall hues🍂

Warm enough to break a sweat by noon,
then a cool breeze sneaks in by evening🌬️

I kind of love that about this time of year♡

Rich amber and terracotta.
Something about spring light makes these autumn tones look even more beautiful✨

For those cool mornings and evenings,
a silk haori is just right.
