Two-way Wedding Dress

Style2 Skirt9

Hello! Here are some pictures of the wedding dress that I completed recently. Hours and hours of work went in to it, and I can’t believe it’s finally done. This dress took a lot of thinking, revising, testing and more revising because this dress is a two-way dress. There are three pieces to the dress: strapless A-line dress base, Obi sash with the big back detailing as style one dress and teared organza over skirt as style two dress. The bride could not decide which way she wanted to go with it; classy, or girly or fluffy, so I offered to make a two-way dress so she could have both. There was a challenge of figuring out how to attach the obi sash without it looking like it was put-on later, due to the heaviness of the back detailing. I ended up using the plastic board which is usually used for hat brims for the waist band to support the weight. vivat veritas wedding dress sketchesHere are the initial sketches. The left one is the style one and the right one is the style two over skirt. Style1 Skirt3

In order to add the volume to the obi, a soft wire (also usually used for hat brim) was inserted at hem. It holds up the weight of the medium weight satin fabric. Style1 Skirt5

Gem sash is another addition you can put it on and off from the dress. I made a small button hole in the style one obi sash, so the gem sash end can be hidden under the back details. Style2 Skirt1

I love the bust pleating details of the dress. It is such an classy design. I first cut out the sweet heart shaped top bodice, then I draped the pleating design on the dress form, using the same satin fabric cut on bias. Then I based the pleats, pressed, and took it to the sewing machine to make it the permanent pleats. Style2 Skirt6

These are style two over skirt above. This required a bit of testing and modifying. At first, I used chiffon Georgette, but it did not provide the structure that the bride was looking for. So I inserted fishing thread at hem as I surge the hem, but it made the circular motion shape, and did not turn out the way I was hoping for. Then I realized that I needed to rethink about my fabric choice. I found this off-white organza, and it worked perfectly. It gave the volume that I wanted. Style2 Skirt7When you look inside of the style two over skirt, you see the hooks in the front and some satin ribbons on the sides and back to tie to the main dress. I wanted to be sure that this skirt does not slip down during the wedding.vv two way wedding dress

My dress form is a bit bigger than the bride, so I could not put the dress on it to take pictures. The pictures above are obi sash for the style one dress and the pictures below them are style two organza dress, combined with the base dress.

It was a lot of work but the result was so satisfying!

Wedding Dress Inpiration | RIME ARODAKY

Wedding Dress Inpiration | RIME ARODAKY

Since I am working on wedding dresses, my eyes naturally go towards beautiful gowns as I browse through the internet. I wanted to share this French designer, Rime Arodaky. Her designs are beautiful – free spirited, beautiful shape to flatter your body and unexpected back details and cut outs. If you’ve been reading my blog, you know how I have a weak spot for cutouts!

I wish to bring this kind of wedding dresses to Japanese market. Many Japanese brides go for princessy, 18th century ball gown-ish, puffy wedding dresses. The part of the reasons seem like that is what is mostly available in the market. It is more common for the brides to do the rental wedding dresses in Japan, and the dress boutiques have more of the princess line, fluffly dresses than simple A-line or mermaid dresses. Perhaps another reason is the body type – it might be hard to pull off the dresses like Rime Arodaky’s if you are short like many Asian girls are. Whatever the reasons maybe, I would like to bring more of this kind of dresses to Japan as I think they are beautiful and comfortable. You don’t want to spend your wedding day being uncomfortable!

P.S. My past bridal gown work can be viewed here. Also my etsy shop here.

DIY:: Lace Shorts

June 2, 2014 By Chie

DIY lace shorts by vivat veritasI’m revamping my wardrobe by taking the old clothes and turning them into something that I actually wear. I would not say that I have a huge collection of clothes, but I do have one closet full of clothes. I recently noticed that I only wear a handful of them on regular basis. Other stuff is clothes that I really like but not wear so much, so I am tackling one by one to refashion them.

First up was the 90’s dress from my previous post. The second one is the old pair of jeans. They fit me fine, but did not have enough stretch, so wearing them for a long time was uncomfortable. I decided to make them into jean shorts (great video tutorial on how to distress it here), but failed because I did not consider the fact that my jeans were skinny jeans. If you try to make a jean cut-off by chopping off your skinny jeans, they turn out a little funny. They are too fitted and weirdly shaped. I did not want to give up on them, so I went to Pinterest to find some solution. I saw this pin, adding a lace fabric to the side to expand the size a bit and thought that would work for my shorts! DIY lace shorts by vivat veritas2

My lace is from Nakamura, the online shop in Japan. I wrote a review of their shop here. They have so many options for lovely lace pieces.

{Outfit details: Shirt – Nasty Gal, Shorts – Self made, Purse – 3.1 Philip Lim, Slip on -got them for 2000 yen (20 dollars) from here, Necklace – Moose and Nigel}shorts3DIY lace shorts by vivat veritas3

It has been unexceptionally hot here. I was wearing jeans earlier in the day, but they got drenched in sweat while I was walking around, so I had to switch them to these shorts. I love how my old jeans now have a purpose beyond just existing in my closet!

Kimono fabric has always been at the heart of what I do, but I want to bring in more materials with a history — things that have traveled, carried weight, meant something before they became a garment.

A butterfly doesn’t transform alone.

Someone sews, and a shape is born.
Someone paints, and light finds a face.
Someone adorns, and a story stirs beside the ear.

Each gesture layered upon the next —

Before the doors opened, there was this. Garments Before the doors opened, there was this.

Garments waiting on the rack. Brushes in hand. Quiet conversations in corners. The unhurried moment before everything becomes a show.

""Released. Reimagined."" with @designerhelen was made possible by so many generous hands — our makeup and hair team, our models, every person who showed up early and stayed late. Thank you for caring for these pieces, and for each other, the way you did.

More to come🤍

Reimagined."" は、たくさんの方々の手によって生まれました。 メイク・ヘアチームのみなさん、モデルのみなさん、早くから駆けつけて最後まで残ってくれたすべての方へ。 本当にありがとうございました。
次回も頑張ります🤍

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Released. Reimagined.

It took quite a bit of wandering to find this venue. Tucked just off a quiet side street from Harajuku’s Takeshita Exit — full glass frontage, light pouring in. The moment I stepped inside, I knew🌱

Right at the entrance, @brownie_shots will be running a pop-up☕︎ The central space becomes our runway. VIP seating going in now.
