DIY: Old Lady’s Skirt to Bustier

August 1, 2012 By Chie

So a few days ago I was on the Forever 21 site, browsing around. They had this “buy one get one free” section and it was just unbelievably cheap. I added two shorts to my shopping cart, and the the total amount was $10 plus $4 shipping. For two pairs of shorts! I sat on it for a little bit and at the end, I closed my browser without purchasing anything. The fact that they were so cheap kind of turned me of, and I didn’t really want or need new pairs of cheap shorts anyway. I just felt like I did not need to clutter my closet with more things, that can be thrown away after a few wares.

Instead, I went to my closet and pulled out this old skirt. It was a hand-me-down from when I was in elementry school. I don’t remember ever wearing it, since it is a weird length skirt for an elementary school kid (midi length). Now I took a second look at the skirt I liked the grandma-ish floral print. I shortened the skirt (will show you the result in a different post) and with the left over fabric, I made this bustier. I added a built-in bra cup, so I can wear it without a bra. I modified the same pattern I drafted for this bustier and this bustier.

ASOS Market Place Guest Post

July 30, 2012 By Chie

I have a guest blogger here today. This article was written by Sarah Oxley on behalf of ASOS Marketplace. Sarah is a fashion and vintage lover, who’s always on the lookout for the next vintage trend. Here is Sarah: ❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤

The Vintage Fashion Hotspot The fashion business is a tricky business, and it’s hard to get noticed in this fast paced industry. What’s in one day is out the other, or so they say. This is changing, because many styles are just too good to be completely abandoned. Vintage is making a big comeback in the fashion world, because people simply love 40s, 50s, 60s, 70, 80s (yes, even 80s) and 90s vintage dresses. The nostalgic charm of these styles inspire many new and upcoming designers to put their own personal twist on these vintage eras, and there’s one place where you can take a look at the latest vintage inspired fashion. ASOS Marketplace offers a platform for designers to share their latest creation in the form of a boutique, and to sell their creations through the Marketplace. For vintage lovers, this is a great place to shop, as there’s constantly new collections and boutiques joining the Marketplace. Popularity of designers can grow very quickly through ‘The People’s Runway’, a blog featuring some of the most popular photos and fashion pieces. To give you an idea of what you can see on the Marketplace, here are some examples of my personal boutique favourites:

E-Vintage E-Vintage has a wide range of vintage clothes for both women and men. They also provide lots of very colourful and different accessories, such as this bright and bold handbag, as well as the nifty purple belt, which really draws people’s eyes. The Navajo shirt is a design that used to feature in all sorts of clothing and items, so it’s nice to see it making a comeback. Bird On A Wire I very much like the versatility of Bird On A Wire. They commit to several different eras, but are nevertheless devoted to each one. Above are some items from their 60s inspired range, while below shows some of their 90s designs.

The Whitepepper The Whitepepper has a wide variety of designs and clothes for men and women, and although vintage is at their core, they manage to add a twist to everything thereby creating a brand new look. These are just some examples of the boutiques you can find on ASOS Marketplace. To find out how your vintage fashion can be featured visit the website here.

Shop Update: Polk-a-dot and Star Peplum Tops

July 29, 2012 By Chie

Top: Star print peplum top-M, Bottom: Polkadot peplum top with neon piping – M

The shop is updated with these new items! I made these in size medium, but can be worn comfortably by size S girls as well. Both prints were bought in Nippori as usual. I think these tops would look great for going to Summer Music Festivals or something. I would pair them with cut-off shorts and sneakers. I made some early fall items as well, which I’m stocking in the shop starting next week.

If you wore this to a café, you'd definitely stand out 😆☕

A new form of fashion, born from upcycling. A coffee bean sack jacket × a kimono-remake set-up.

Every single piece is finished entirely by hand, from matching the fabric patterns to the sewing itself 🪡🧚 Actually, this kimono has a different fabric worked into the lining too — there's a color that only reveals itself once you put it on ♡

I wanted to give the stories sleeping in vintage materials a chance to become part of someone's everyday life again.

Honestly, I wasn't sure whether to include this piece in this show. It was something I'd made a while back. But talking it through with Helen, we decided to show it together after all.

Working with Helen for almost three weeks to prepare for the show, I learned so much — how to build a collection, how to style looks that engage an audience, how to put together a look as a whole. I don't think I would have made the decision to include this piece if I'd been on my own. Creating something together with someone else really opens your eyes to things you wouldn't see alone.

thank you Helen @designerhelen♡

A precious obi entrusted to me by a client.

I often hear people say they aren't sure how to incorporate their cherished obis into their daily lives. That is exactly why I focus on reading the story woven into the fabric and reimagining it into a design that fits modern living😌

There are hidden details that make this bag truly functional, even if you can't see them at first glance. By attaching the shoulder strap, it becomes the perfect hands-free bag for an active lifestyle👜

The lining of a kimono — often discarded when the fabric is remade into something new.
That soft, lightweight silk felt too good to let go, so I turned it into a summer dress. It needed something more, so I asked artist Riko Monma to dye it for me — and suddenly it came alive again.

I made this piece a few years ago, but for the recent event with @designerhelena, I decided to bring it into the collection. Helen gave me so much guidance on color — combinations I never would have arrived at on my own. The whole preparation process was just really, really fun😌

Cafés do Brasil — the stamp from its days carrying beans stays right there on the back.

Kimono fabric has always been at the heart of what I do, but I want to bring in more materials with a history — things that have traveled, carried weight, meant something before they became a garment.
