Archer Button Up Shirt Dress Variation

April 17, 2015 By Chie

Grainline Archer Button Up Dress Variation by Vivat Veritas

Here is an addition to my Spring wardrobe, just in time for MMM15 (My MMM12 here)! I used the Grainline Archer button up shirt pattern AGAIN. This is my fifth try of this pattern(1, 2, 3 and 4th one is not blogged). I am convinced that I totally got my money’s worth for this pattern. I worn these four shirts so many times over the winter. Most of the time, I have been wearing it underneath a sweater just to add an extra warmth to survive the winter. Tokyo winter is not as harsh as say, NY, but because the houses here are not very well insulated, I had to wear warm clothes even in indoors.

Anyway, as always, I made this in size 4. The only modification I made was the length. I’ve already lengthened the shirt by 2 inches for my shirt version, and for this dress version, I further lengthened it by additional 10 inches. I skipped the sleeve tabs this time because the fabric was not as slippery as the silk I used before and it would hold the shape when I roll up the sleeves.

The fabric is light weight cotton lawn. It’s very soft and feels almost like gauze. I bought this about six months ago in Nippori Tomato for 100 yen per meter. I was going to make Andy a button up shirt with it. I even made a muslin, but when he fitted the muslin, I was disappointed. It did not fit him at all. I used the extra large pattern from a Japanese pattern book, called “Men’s shirt book”(男のシャツの本) by Ryuichiro Shimazaki. I think the patterns are designed for skinny Japanese dudes, not my weirdly shaped, boxer husband. The shoulder and sleeve parts were so off, I was at a loss how to fix it. I let it sit while I was thinking of how to correct the pattern and somewhere along the way I lost the motivation to continue. So I just decided to take this fabric for my own clothes. Sorry Andy, no shirt for you.

I love the color of this shirt. It’s close to navy blue, but a bit eclectic version of navy blue, if that makes any sense. I didn’t have any navy in my wardrobe, so it is a good addition. I can wear this with skinny belt, moto jacket, trench, or wear it as a jacket with t-shirt and jeans underneath.

Here is Kiko, trying on my new pumps…

chie sig2

Traveling Cable Hat by The Purl Bee

April 14, 2015 By Chie

Traveling Cable Hat by The Purl Bee Vivat Veritas

The Spring weather has been moody here in Tokyo. One day it’s 25 degrees and beautiful but other days it’s raining and freezing. I finished this cable knit hat just in time to get a few wears before the Spring weather fully hits. I started on this hat in mid March and worked on and off for a while, while I watched some shows. I just finished the Pillar of the Earth, British historical show that takes place in 12th century England. The show completes in eight episodes, which is great for avoiding addiction and emotional attachment.

The pattern is from The Purl Bee, called Traveling Cable Hat. It was very easy to follow and kept me entertained throughout the process. As a knitting beginner, I tend to go for very simple patterns (here and here), like only rib and knit stitches or only purl stitches kind of patterns. The problem I found with those patterns is that it is rather boring. Cable knit was more time consuming, but you are constantly looking back the pattern and instructions, you don’t have time to get bored!
The yarns are from 100 yen shop (an equivalent of a dollar store). It’s a mint color wool and acrylic mix and is very soft. I used three bolls of 20 gram yarns.

I thought I would like the color and I do, but being so near my face, I feel like the color is too strong. I tend to wear a lot of neutral colors in Winter, so I thought the pop of color might be good, but it feels so bright on my head! If you are a neutral color lover, do you feel weird about wearing bright color as much as me?
I know the cold weather is nearly ending, but I think I’ll keep my knitting going. It’s such a nice activity to be doing while watching TV or talking on the couch. My next project will be Ondawa sweater by Brooklyn Tweed. Sonja‘s version is great; it convinced me to finally try my hands on bigger knitting project like sweater!

もう春ですが、また1つニット帽作っちゃいました。

テレビを見ながら、手持無沙汰になるのがいやなので、編み物好きです。
これは100均で買ったベビー用毛糸を使って、作りました。
編み方は、The Purl BeeのTraveling Cable Knit。
無料の型紙です。
日本の編み物のパターンのように、図解はないのですが、私的にはこういう文字だけの方が解りやすいです。

ちなみに、着ているコートとパンツも自分で作りました。

Spring Trend I Like

April 7, 2015 By Chie

spring 2015 trend vivat veritasHere is a round up of what I’m planning to make this Spring. I’m all about good basics, like converse sneakers and structured blazers. I can’t get enough of white and white too. Maybe because I make wedding dresses, white and other white-ish colors like ivory and ecru feel special to me. What are you planning on wearing/making this Spring?

1. White sneakers: Converse leather sneakers (I also like this Superga ones)
2. Off shoulder cropped top (source): This Free People one is nice since it has straps. This delicate lace one is so cute paired with distressed jeans or cut-offs. Maybe use this Simplicity 5962?
3.Classic black leather band watch: Daniel Wellington (also love this rose gold one)
4. Culottes: White culottes. I shorten these wide legged pants I made back in 2013 to made them into midi length culottes. The hems got too dirty by bike riding so it was a good way to refashion them! If you were to buy one, these alice + olivia ones are chic, or make them yourself using Megan Nielson Tania Culottes patterns!)
5. White blazer (source): I just finished making mine using Butterick 4610 (previously made twice here and here) with white cotton. Love the length of this LAVEER blazer (hits the mid butt!) and the collar of this Rebecca Minkoff one.

P.S. Shopbop is having April’s Friends & Family Event (25% off)! Details here.
