Faux Leather Top

November 15, 2013 By Chie

faux leather top still1Faux leather top, Tory Burch cardigan (similar), Oiajules bracelet, U/O jeans and Rag & Bone booties.

I’ve been spending a lot of my train sitting time on reading up on design blogs like little green notebook, MADE BY GIRL, and small shop blog. Since we moved into a new place at the end of Summer, we are in the process of reorganizing and redecorating our space. From reading these design blogs, I’ve learned the importance of mixing textures. Instead of using one texture through out the room, you mix rug, wood, metal, glass etc to add depth. The same thing can be said for fashion as well. It is so much more interesting to have different textures mixed and matched.

This faux leather top is my favorite for two reasons – one is that it is not black but navy blue. We all tend to gravitate towards black in the colder season, right? Navy blue is a nice change. Number two reason is that it is sleeveless so you can wear it on its own, turtle neck inside or cardigan on top. faux leather top4 faux leather top still2 faux leather top vivat veritas

Mommy’s Diary: Watercolor on canvas

November 14, 2013 By Chie

mommy's diarykids art by vivat veritasAfter reading this post about incorporating kids’ art into your home, I could not resist tackling this kid’s painting project. The post has many great tips on displaying kids arts in stylish way. I picked up some canvas at an arts & craft shop for 3 bucks each, and water color paint set from 100 yen shop. I layed news paper underneath the supplies and let Kiko just have fun with it! She had a great time mixing the paints, watering it down with water and using the brushes. Even more, she was thrilled when she saw her “art” hung on the dining room wall. She was so proud.

I have another small canvas, which I want her “abstract art” in pink and gold. Time to pick up more paints! kids art by vivat veritas4 kids art by vivat veritas3 kids art by vivat veritas6 kids art by vivat veritas5 kids art by vivat veritas7kids art by vivat veritas2

Interview:: Lauren of Limited Production by Lauren Patrell

November 13, 2013 By Chie

100_6785I found Lauren’s shop, LP by LP through the comment she left on my blog. I followed the link she left and found this clutch bag made out of ikat fabric and drift woods! So unique. I am always intrigued by small business owner especially in the area of handmade business. I’ve read some statistics that 50% of Americans are self-employed now, and the trend is on the increase (The article was from etsy. I can’t seem to find the link). When I first started my etsy shop, I had no idea what it would entail – I thought I could just make whatever I wanted and someone would buy it. But the reality is that owning your own business has a lot more tasks that are not visible, like book keeping, marketing, lots of emails, photography skills, HTML to make your own website and more. I asked Lauren a few questions what it is like to be a small business owner. I hope you’ll enjoy a little peak in her life!
1. Tell us about your business. How long have you been doing it for?
My business is named Limited Production by Lauren Patrell, LP by LP for short. I started making purses to sell about 3 years ago, before that I was just making bags for myself or gifts.  I design, draft, cut, and sew every bag and all the patterns for my bags.  The name came from my initials and that every item I make is unique.
2. Where do you live?
I live in White Lake, Michigan, United States.  It’s a suburb of Detroit.IMG_0842 - Version 2 copy
lpbylp studio
3. What is your #1 source of income and why do you think that is?
My #1 source of income is, well, my bags!  I think its because I strive to make the best product I possibly can and people can see that in my work.  Quite often a bag won’t even make it to the web.  Like the little black bag sitting next to my machine, was sold before I could even take decent pictures of it.
4. How have things changed for you since you started? How has your business grown?
Everything has changed sense starting my business.  The first couple bags I made were sewn completely by hand because I didn’t have a working sewing machine.  I got my Mom’s old Viking sewing machine and started sewing every day, soon after I did my first craft show.  Now I’ve out grown the Viking (it died : ( ) and am shopping for an industrial sewing machine.  At first I made each bag unique because I wanted to but also had limited materials. I would sew with whatever I could get my hands on, old jeans, blankets, eventually I depleted my Nana’s stash of fabric.  Now I make my bags with new and re-purposed materials.  Canvas and bottom weights like twill, the new; upholstery fabric samples, leather and suede, the re-purposed.  I also use all new zippers and hardware.  Fabric samples aren’t very big, most often I can only make one item with each sample, so it keeps each bag unique.
lp by lp studio
5. Can you share some of the projects you are currently working on?
Currently, I’m working on a group of little cross body bags and just getting my online shop ready for it’s first holiday season.
6. What is something you find you struggle with?
I struggle with writing!  Any task that requires it I procrastinate, like writing product descriptions.  I’m also not very tech savvy.  Maintaining my website and my blog has really been a learning process.
bags by lp by lp
7. What is your life motto or tips?
I guess my motto is perfection to a point.  I’m a big perfectionist, sometimes I can really drive myself crazy.  For example ripping out and redoing a line of top stitching multiple times just because each stitch isn’t completely perfect.  Thankfully, my boyfriend, Kyle, is the complete opposite.  He’s always reminding me that I’m the only person who even notices these tiny imperfections.  I guess perfection is also a struggle of mine, my best is only good enough until I can do better.

A butterfly doesn’t transform alone.

Someone sews, and a shape is born.
Someone paints, and light finds a face.
Someone adorns, and a story stirs beside the ear.

Each gesture layered upon the next —
until one garment spreads its wings on the runway🦋

To everyone who was part of this show 💌
Thank you.🥹Your hands brought this to life.

Before the doors opened, there was this. Garments Before the doors opened, there was this.

Garments waiting on the rack. Brushes in hand. Quiet conversations in corners. The unhurried moment before everything becomes a show.

""Released. Reimagined."" with @designerhelen was made possible by so many generous hands — our makeup and hair team, our models, every person who showed up early and stayed late. Thank you for caring for these pieces, and for each other, the way you did.

More to come🤍

Reimagined."" は、たくさんの方々の手によって生まれました。 メイク・ヘアチームのみなさん、モデルのみなさん、早くから駆けつけて最後まで残ってくれたすべての方へ。 本当にありがとうございました。
次回も頑張ります🤍

From a chaotic atelier to the runway.

Before a collection comes to life, there are floors buried under fabric, pattern pieces, and countless hours of trial and error.

A heartfelt thank you to the incredible models who breathed life into each look, and to every member of the team who made it all possible 💝

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Released. Reimagined.

It took quite a bit of wandering to find this venue. Tucked just off a quiet side street from Harajuku’s Takeshita Exit — full glass frontage, light pouring in. The moment I stepped inside, I knew🌱

Right at the entrance, @brownie_shots will be running a pop-up☕︎ The central space becomes our runway. VIP seating going in now.

Less than one week to go. Fingers crossed for sunshine ☀️

It’s May — and yet, fall hues🍂

Warm enough to break a sweat by noon,
then a cool breeze sneaks in by evening🌬️

I kind of love that about this time of year♡

Rich amber and terracotta.
Something about spring light makes these autumn tones look even more beautiful✨

For those cool mornings and evenings,
a silk haori is just right.
