Meet Rina

December 9, 2013 By Chie

meet rina
Rina has been helping me with odds and ends of running Vivat Veritas including sewing for over six months now. She is also a contributor for the blog. When it comes to sewing, she is extremely detail-oriented, as you can see from the close-up photos of this button down shirt and wedding dress. I interviewed her about her background, how she started and her future plans. Here is Rina:
1. When did you start sewing? What made you want to start?

I started sewing when I was 10-11 years old. I remember I made stuffed toys with felt, bags with used jeans, and camisoles with stitched bandannas. I started making garments more formal way when I was 24.

My mom used to sew my clothes when I was little. She let me use her sewing machine, and told me how to use it. I think that experience in particular made me want to start sewing.
2. Do you have formal training?
I went to a small sewing school once a week from 2011 to 2012. The school gave me basic sewing skills and knowledge.  I loved going to the school but had to quit it because I moved away. After that, I’ve learned from books and online sources.
3. What is your favorite material?
I like natural material such as cotton, linen… I like buttons, too! I can’t stop checking out button shops even if I don’t need them. My favorite button shop is here  http://www.l-musee.com/  They have a lot of imported antique buttons, which are not that cheap but it’s fun to see them.

4. What do you enjoy sewing the most?
Forming. The most interesting process of sewing is to put parts together and make them solid. The process of bringing the two dimensional design to three dimensional is the most exciting for me. I also take great pleasure in executing small details beautifully.
5. Do you have any recommendations for Japanese sewing books?
Pattern Magic series. The ideas and patterns on the books are complicated and a bit difficult for me, but it’s unique and impressive.
こぎん刺しの本 津軽民芸刺繍 I’m a big fan of Sashiko, Japanese traditional hand stitch. Kogin-sashi, a type of Sashiko, is really powerful and beautiful folk art in Aomori, northern part of Japan.
6. When you are not sewing, what do you enjoy doing?
I love reading books. Haruki Murakami is my favorite author.
I enjoy going to a cozy cafe and talking for hours over cups of coffee with my friends on the weekend.

7. What’s your plan for the near future?
I decided to go to a sewing technical school from next April. I would like to make comfortable, beautiful, and universal garments. I feel I need to learn more about patterns, design, material and more.

I’m excited to get myself in new environment!

8. Let us know what you are planning to sew this winter for yourself!
Coat! A beautiful coat designed by Raf Simons got stuck on my mind for a while ago, and coat has been on my to-make list since then. This winter is a good time to make it! Chie’s plan inspired me, too 😛 I gotta find out pretty fabric!

Interview:: Lauren of Limited Production by Lauren Patrell

November 13, 2013 By Chie

100_6785I found Lauren’s shop, LP by LP through the comment she left on my blog. I followed the link she left and found this clutch bag made out of ikat fabric and drift woods! So unique. I am always intrigued by small business owner especially in the area of handmade business. I’ve read some statistics that 50% of Americans are self-employed now, and the trend is on the increase (The article was from etsy. I can’t seem to find the link). When I first started my etsy shop, I had no idea what it would entail – I thought I could just make whatever I wanted and someone would buy it. But the reality is that owning your own business has a lot more tasks that are not visible, like book keeping, marketing, lots of emails, photography skills, HTML to make your own website and more. I asked Lauren a few questions what it is like to be a small business owner. I hope you’ll enjoy a little peak in her life!
1. Tell us about your business. How long have you been doing it for?
My business is named Limited Production by Lauren Patrell, LP by LP for short. I started making purses to sell about 3 years ago, before that I was just making bags for myself or gifts.  I design, draft, cut, and sew every bag and all the patterns for my bags.  The name came from my initials and that every item I make is unique.
2. Where do you live?
I live in White Lake, Michigan, United States.  It’s a suburb of Detroit.IMG_0842 - Version 2 copy
lpbylp studio
3. What is your #1 source of income and why do you think that is?
My #1 source of income is, well, my bags!  I think its because I strive to make the best product I possibly can and people can see that in my work.  Quite often a bag won’t even make it to the web.  Like the little black bag sitting next to my machine, was sold before I could even take decent pictures of it.
4. How have things changed for you since you started? How has your business grown?
Everything has changed sense starting my business.  The first couple bags I made were sewn completely by hand because I didn’t have a working sewing machine.  I got my Mom’s old Viking sewing machine and started sewing every day, soon after I did my first craft show.  Now I’ve out grown the Viking (it died : ( ) and am shopping for an industrial sewing machine.  At first I made each bag unique because I wanted to but also had limited materials. I would sew with whatever I could get my hands on, old jeans, blankets, eventually I depleted my Nana’s stash of fabric.  Now I make my bags with new and re-purposed materials.  Canvas and bottom weights like twill, the new; upholstery fabric samples, leather and suede, the re-purposed.  I also use all new zippers and hardware.  Fabric samples aren’t very big, most often I can only make one item with each sample, so it keeps each bag unique.
lp by lp studio
5. Can you share some of the projects you are currently working on?
Currently, I’m working on a group of little cross body bags and just getting my online shop ready for it’s first holiday season.
6. What is something you find you struggle with?
I struggle with writing!  Any task that requires it I procrastinate, like writing product descriptions.  I’m also not very tech savvy.  Maintaining my website and my blog has really been a learning process.
bags by lp by lp
7. What is your life motto or tips?
I guess my motto is perfection to a point.  I’m a big perfectionist, sometimes I can really drive myself crazy.  For example ripping out and redoing a line of top stitching multiple times just because each stitch isn’t completely perfect.  Thankfully, my boyfriend, Kyle, is the complete opposite.  He’s always reminding me that I’m the only person who even notices these tiny imperfections.  I guess perfection is also a struggle of mine, my best is only good enough until I can do better.

Meet Taren of Oslo & Alfred

September 5, 2013 By Chie

taren of oslo and alfred vivat veritas
I met Taren back in 2011 at the Etsy Event, LOVE handmade in Ginza. I was having a booth there and Taren stopped by with her friends. We started to talk, and it turned out that we both have the same age child. From then on, we slowly started hanging out more, even involving our husbands and sometimes kids. Taren is the owner of Oslo & Alfred, a shop full of lovely illustrations. For my SS2013 collection, I asked Taren if she would like to collaborate to create a dress, her creating the fabric design and me making a dress using it. I had a chance to ask her the inspiration behind the design and show you her work space pictures. Here is Taren!
~ I designed the Oslo & Alfred Feather fabric with cute dresses and skirts in mind. The image of soft feathers on a skirt came to me one night while I was getting ready for bed. I get so many ideas when I am not expecting them. I feel blessed to have these ideas and pictures pop up in my mind. It validates my desire to work in a creative field. Because of my faith as a Christ follower, I thank God for the new ideas that seem to come to me effortlessly. He has provided the opportunity for me to pursue what I love and I am incredibly grateful. Designing fabric and textiles has been a wonderful way to express myself. Then to have Vivat Veritas complete the vision by making an adorable dress is like seeing your dreams become a reality. I am blessed by our collaboration and I hope we can continue to make stylish contributions to all the fashionistas out there! ~taren2

Be sure to check out her print shop here.

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Released. Reimagined.

It took quite a bit of wandering to find this venue. Tucked just off a quiet side street from Harajuku’s Takeshita Exit — full glass frontage, light pouring in. The moment I stepped inside, I knew🌱

Right at the entrance, @brownie_shots will be running a pop-up☕︎ The central space becomes our runway. VIP seating going in now.

Less than one week to go. Fingers crossed for sunshine ☀️

この季節のそのギャップが、なんか好き♡

深みのある金茶とテラコッタ。
春の光に当てると、
秋色が美しく見える気がします✨

It’s May — and yet, fall hues🍂

Warm enough to break a sweat by noon,
then a cool breeze sneaks in by evening🌬️

I kind of love that about this time of year♡

Rich amber and terracotta.
Something about spring light makes these autumn tones look even more beautiful✨
