Making Wedding Dress Pt. 13 – Completed!

October 25, 2011 By Chie

So here it is, the end of the Making Wedding Dress series! I handed the wedding dress to my friend, and she wore it at her wedding after party. I was so thrilled to see her wear my creation… I really enjoy making the wedding dress. It took a long time, but the result was satisfying, and most of all, I learned a lot! There are so many things going into a couture sewing, and I can’t wait to improve this area of my sewing skills in the future. In fact, I just bought a book, titled “Cool Couture” by Kenneth D. King to study more.

Anyway, I will stop rambling and let the pictures tell the story:

If you are interested, check out more photos and her testimonial (in Japanese) here🙂

Making Wedding Dress Pt. 12 – Waist Stay

October 11, 2011 By Chie

The last part of the wedding dress sewing is making a waist stay. I bought some petersham ribbon for waist stays. I like the edge of the petersham ribbon, and I think I prefer it to grosgrain ribbon.
I wanted this dress to be special for my friend, so I decided to embroider my friend’s and her husband-to-be’s name on the waist stay. It’s tradition that you wear “something blue” to a wedding, so I embroidered it with pastel blue thread.

The look inside the wedding dress. I made two waist stays for extra support, one attached on the upper line of the waist band and the other attached on the lower line.

I also attached narrow width ribbons on the side before sewing the bodice lining. I did this so that I could hang this strapless wedding dress with a hanger.

Here is a little video of the completed dress! Seriously, the dress took hours. But the result was incredibly satisfying. I’m glad my friend asked me to make her the dress..it opened up a whole new world of couture sewing for me, and I really enjoyed learning new things!

I’ll show you the completed dress and some pictures from the wedding next week! xo

Making Wedding Dress Pt. 11 – Balloon Train

October 4, 2011 By Chie

I’m continuing making the wedding dress series! One thing that my bride friend felt very strongly about is including this particular back bow, pictured below(image source unknown).  She called it “balloon train”, although it is not really a train in a traditional sense. When coming up with the dress design with her, I asked her to list the features that were most important to her. This bow was her number one priority. I did a bit of research on “balloon train” in Japanese, but nothing really came up, save this one image. It is such a small image I could not really see the exact construction details.

But from talking to my friend, I knew she wanted it to be kind of flowy, bowncy and light weight. We picked polyester organza as a fabric. Then I made three big bows in slightly different sizes, and placed the smallest bow on the top of bigger bows. In the middle bow, I inserted a white wire, so that it would have more 3D effect. I looking at the pictures of the “balloon train” it seemed like to be supported by something like a wire. This would give structure to the bow and keep it from looking too flat.

Under the three bows, I added two long strings of organza to imitate the balloon train. For those strings, I did not finish the hem and left the raw edges. I often stopped and looked at the dress from far to see the balance of the bow. I don’t have many pictures of this process since I was concentrating on making this thing!

On a visit to Kinko Town, Kagoshima, I received this obi from @tuzu.naturaldye, who had originally obtained it from a company that collects unwanted fabrics. She passed it on to me, knowing it still had value and potential.

I upcycled the fabric into a bustier, giving it a fresh form while preserving its history.

The skirt is made from the delicate silk lining of a kimono, which I dyed in soft pink to bring out its beauty in a new way.

By transforming high-quality traditional textiles, I create pieces that can be seamlessly integrated into everyday life.
Do your favorite garments hold a story too?
