Interview: Makeup Artist Mayuko Nakamura

August 2, 2011 By Chie

Today I’m sharing an interview I did with  the very talented makeup artist, Mayuko Nakamura. She did the make up for  Sarah who was featured in my Spring collection lookbook.  She also did the  hair and make up for Hannah and Rachael who were featured in the the After the Carnival lookbook. I was intrigued to see how she transforms the models without caking a heavy make-up on and was interested in learning more about her thoughts on make up and hair in general. I interviewed her in Japanese and translated in the transcript into English..here is Mayuko 🙂

1. Please introduce yourself.

My name is Mayuko Nakamura, I was born on October 25th, 1978 in Tokyo. My hobby is reading books and  magazines and I a  also into photography. I love exercising and I’ve been surfing since I was a college student. Recently I started skate boarding. I enjoy training at the gym as well.
I spend my days going to make up school, and working part time at a shop called ZAPSURFSHOP in Higashi Kitazawa. The shop is filled with beautiful surf boards from California and colorful skate boards made of wood. Please stop by at the shop if you have a chance!
2. Why did you decide to pursue a carrier as a make up artist?
Last year I quit my job working at a sports shop after working there for 10 years. I decided to jump into the world of hair and make up which I’ve loved since I was little. I was inspired by the delightful customer service at M.A.C., and was happily surprised that you can express women’s beauty in an infinite number of  ways by using a colorful makeup palette. I wanted to express the simple and natural beauty of women.
3. What kind of makeup and skin care do you recommend?
I recommend makeup that looks as though you are not wearing any make up at all! I suggest natural make up that let people wonder “is she really wearing make up?” , when in fact, you have payed attention even to the smallest details. For that, it is important to do daily skin care. Make sure to remove make up and moisturize. In the Summer, use skin masks.
If you feel uncomfortable wearing foundation in the Summer, I recommend using BB cream. The BB creams that are out on the market are amazing.  They have sun screen effect as well as moisturizing effect. In order to avoid the skin shinning too much, you can use some finishing powder, but in the Summer, you can take advantage of the natural sun shine and create a glossy, healthy look. For blush, I recommend cream blush instead of a powder one. Personally, I think it would look cute to put on orange color cream blush on top of your nose and accentuate your cheek bones  if you have high cheek bones. You might want to use items that have a glitter effect in the Summer, but if over used, t might give too much shine so be careful for that. As long as you can create a beautiful base makeup with BB cream, you can be creative with your favorite cosmetics around your eye or lips, using fingers.
It helps to know your personal attractive parts and features. Work with what you have already, try to enhance your natural beauty, and be confident. I recommend items from a brand, THREE, which has items with my favorite aroma, nerolido. It has nice smell and plenty of natural essence.
4. What kind of BB creams do you recommend?

I am a fan of the Korean brand, HANSKIN Caviar God BB. The cream includes vegitable vitamines, and covers well as well as giving a natural look.
LANCOM UV expert GN shield50BB has high sun screen effect but does not dry out the skin. The effect is beyond that of  regular base make up items. Some people add foundation on this, but I often go out just with this item on my face.
BB creams have a benefit of going with any color of skin, but it is important to find a color that matches with your particular skin color to avoid dullness or being too white.
Bobby Brown and Laura Mercier have similar products, although they don’t name them as “BB cream”. I think BB creams will be more popular in the future.
5. What is your tips for makeup when you have a little time?
When you don’t have enough time to leisurely put makeup on, it is an indication that you need to review your daily makeup routine. Usually, people tend to spend too much time putting on makeup. They take a long time covering up the parts they don’t like, when in fact they should spend more time focusing on your favorite parts of your face. Check what parts of your face you are most confident in or like the most and spend more time accentuating them. If you think that way, your favorite parts of your face will glow. Also, it is always good to look at various people on the street, you never know what you will find and you might be inspired by them to try something different.
6. Japanese Summer is super hot and humid! Is there any hair style that can combat that?
I think doing an up-do makes a girl look cute, clean and sexy in the Summer. By putting your hair up, it makes your head smaller and more compact, thus balancing out the entire figure.
The key is the height of your bun and bangs. Depending on how high or low the bun is, it totally changes the image. Change it up depending on your clothes. Also, you can play with your bangs by using a curling iron, add braids, side parts, or if your daring try a pompadour.
7. What are your future plans and dreams?
I’m planning on proceeding forward by studying daily and finding out new things in the hair and makeup world. Specifically, I would like to create a salon space where women can come in casually and learn how to enhance their beauty. I am also thinking about doing makeup at makeup visits by going to the customer’s house and teaching them the basics in a relaxed environment. In Japan, we live in an aging population so I hope to provide an arena for older women to use makeup and hair enhancements with particular effect so that they can influence both themselves and society. I would like to do as much as I can to provide opportunities for women to look beautiful in their natural state. I hope to be able to realize this goal by working with and  interacting with as many different kind people and as many different body/face types as possible.

Interview: Carly from Chic Steals

June 7, 2011 By Chie

Recently I was browsing DIY and came across a site called Chic Steals. I really liked what I read about the proprietor, Carly and contacted her to see if she would be available to have a virtual sit down. She kindly agreed, you can read the conversation below:)

Left: Carly with her DIY Christian Louboutin for Rodarte Super-Spiked Heels Right: DIY Pamela Love Arrowhead Ring

1) The Chic Steals motto seems to be “Luxury is a Construct”. Could you elaborate on what you mean by that?

What I mean by that phrase is that the idea that something is luxurious is an idea “constructed” (i.e., created) by companies wanting people to buy their stuff.  There’s no consensus among people in general as to what actually defines “luxury” – it’s different from country to culture to social group to socio-economic level to background to personal preference.  What items should command the highest prices in the market?  Fur?  Leather?  Diamonds?  Something that is made of materials that are extremely scarce?  Created by a single artisan?  Made by a company that’s been around since the 1800’s?  The idea of “luxury goods” and the high retail prices they have is just a marketing tool which does not reflect the actual cost to the companies making those items.  80% of the retail price of a luxury item is needed in order to advertise the item and convince people they actually want it, by making it seem rare, unique, unattainable, one-of-a-kind, and made with special and expensive materials.  In fact, most “luxury items” aren’t one-of-a-kind or even created using “special or expensive materials”…and the idea that having or creating a one-of-a-kind, artisan item is absolutely attainable by everyone if they’re willing to try making it themselves!

Carly and her 5-year-old son she calls “Lil Tot” on her blog
2) You are a stay-at-home parent, how do you juggle family and a site of this size?

Right now yes, I am still a stay-at-home mom, but as my son is in school full-time now, I have a lot of “free” time.  The site does take a significant amount of time to run, as well as crafting posts, taking photos, editing photos, and email and interaction with readers – so I spend about 6-7 days a week working on that while my son is in school or late at night after he’s asleep.  Usually on the weekends I’ll devote one whole day to family things, and I’m still taking my son to activities and things outside of school, so right now there isn’t a huge amount of juggling since I’m home most of the time anyway.  If I were to get a full-time job outside of the home, then I would definitely have to learn to juggle like crazy!!:-)

3) On Chic Steals you talk about having attended film and animation school, have those experiences impacted your current work?  How so?

I’m not sure how much they impact my interests in Fashion and DIY; I’ve always felt like it’s more the other way around and Fashion and DIY has impacted my experience in the TV/video and Animation worlds.  I’ve done wardrobe styling and prop creation for shoots – and a lot of that is about DIY and re-creating a look on a very tight budget and timeframe.  When I design characters for an animated series or short, it’s sort of a way of adding an element of Fashion Design to the characters’ clothing…but of course it’s not quite the same as true fashion design, which needs to create something new and unique and special in regards to details, and display your own aesthetic, and be manufactured at a certain price point for your market.  The “fashion” for animated characters has to be animate-able, that is, easy to be moved or redrawn hundreds if not thousands of times, so it has to be simplistic to a certain degree, will likely never be manufactured (and if it is for cosplay it will be simplified and cheapified for such purposes), has to be boldly-colored, unique to the character, and display the character’s aesthetic and personality.  It’s quite different than designing a line of clothing for an actual human consumer – it’s in a bubble, which can be kind of fun.

4)What is your favorite movie with regards to the set and fashion design? Favorite actor/actress style?

Movie: Far and Away or Marie Antoinette.  I’m a sucker for period films.:-)  Actors/actresses I don’t really have a favorite, because so much of their “look” is crafted by a stylist or stylist team behind the scenes, that you have no idea what that person’s style really is anymore.  I’ve always admired the screen presence of women like Emma Thompson, Keira Knightley, and Cate Blanchett, if that makes any sense.

RIVETED Clothing & Accessories

5)You used to run a fashion line how was that experience?  Would you do it again?

That was an amazing learning experience; it’s true that it’s something that you can never really understand just by studying it or reading books about it; it’s something you have to actually do to understand how difficult it is.  (I certainly didn’t understand what people were warning me about prior to trying it…;-)  Not only do you take on all the difficulties of running your own business, all by yourself, but given that it’s in the Fashion Industry that makes it doubly, if not triply hard, to succeed.  What I found was that unless you are a master at patternmaking, sample-making, and sewing multiples of the same garment, you need to outsource that, and then your line can be made or broken by the skill of the people in those positions.  Heck, even if you ARE an expert in those fields you still can’t do it all yourself (and run the business at the same time), so you’re going to have to work with someone to help you somewhere.  There’s a saying that you have to have either a lot of money, a lot of skilled people willing to work for free, or a lot of free time (on a 10-year timeline!) if you want to succeed in the fashion business.  The Sundance Channel’s All on the Line show really gets into the nitty-gritty of marketing and running the business of a line, so I really like watching it because it provides this true window into that world.  But I’m still unsure if I want to go back to it – it’s a huge amount of stress to bring into a young, struggling family if your line is solely funded by yourself.

6)Now you run the popular site Chic Steals, how would you describe the site?  What do you hope to do with the site?

I see my site as a place where people who are interested in trend-driven fashion can find ideas, inspiration, and how-to’s for re-interpreting styles to suit themselves.  I like to share information and be a resource, encouraging people to just try things out and have fun with it – and that they should never be scared of making things or getting their hands dirty.  It’s all in the name of Fashion!:-)  As for my plans for it…I just intend to keep sharing ideas and encouraging others to do the same, and hope that people see it as a place for inspiration and answers!

Right:  DIY Convertible Butterfly Lace Belt , Left: Men’s Shirt to Jumpsuit Romper

7)You are a lover of all things DIY it seems, what was your first DIY project?

I think it was a brooch I made when I was 7 out of a cocktail umbrella, a tiny pair of plastic sunglasses, a couple of seashells, and some fabric sample scraps that were always included in women’s clothing catalogs back in the 80’s.  I remember seeing a photo in a magazine of a beachtowel on some sand, with a pair of sunglasses and some seashells lying about, and wanted to re-create that summery feeling.  It was cute – but of course I never wore it!

8)In DIY what has been the most difficult thing you have tried to teach yourself?

Soldering.  What a mess!

9)Do you have any projects you are working on a the moment?

Ugh…more than I can even list!  A Jil Sander maxi-skirt, an Alexander Wang one-shouldered bra, an Aula Aila beaded sheer top, a Gap sequin totebag…it goes on and on.

10)Any DIY recommendations for beginners and/or advanced?

For beginners: just try different projects, don’t be afraid to fail, and customize methods and materials and whatever to suit your own tastes.  Experiment!  Fun beginner projects involve just gluing or hot-gluing things, because there’s instant gratification there.  For advanced DIY’ers…the sky’s the limit!

Interview: FeduLab

May 25, 2011 By Chie

Happy Tuesday! It’s been a bit hectic since my father-in-law and his wife came to visit us here in Japan. They came to see the first granddaughter Sophia Kiko.  They flew in from New York and have been spending time with her as well as taking in the sights! I’m so glad that they are able to see her when she is still a baby, since babies grow up so fast, and I don’t want the family to miss out on this time in her life. We took them all around and were able  to take them to Odaiba over weekend(which they particularly enjoyed), and we stayed with my parents for the past two nights(my parents are much better hosts then Andy and I 🙂

Anyway, today, I wanted to share this really cute shop that I found – FeduLab. I came to know of her blog and shop from a comment she left on my blog a while back. I love her cute Goldfish pin cushion – every sewer needs a cute pin cushion, right?

Besides pin cushions, her shop has all kinds of handmade goodies: make up pouches, totes, felt broaches and coin purses.

Introductions have never been my forte so I will allow her to speak for herself. Below you can read a little about her.

“Born 25 years ago in a small town near Milan (Italy) I’ve learned since I was young the art of sewing and embroidery by Letizia the dear grandmother, seamstress by profession.
Following a brief spell in the marketing world, I found myself sewn to my first love fabrics and buttons and thus FEDULAB, handbags and accessories was born!
The inspiration? Comes from the most simple and everyday things as a walk or a chat with a friend but she also browses the many fashion magazines and the web hopping from one blog to another.”

Make sure to stop by my May 21st shopbop giveaway post  and enter the drawing for the $100 gift certificate.

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:
