More Technical Difficulties and New Sewing Machine

January 17, 2013 By Chie

floral back cut out dress

{Floral back cut out dress – will be available in different sizes on an online shop based in Australia! More details will be coming soon}

After my sewing machine stopped stitching properly, my laptop broke too. It turned off all of a sudden and never turned back on. I was so sad. Luckily, I had saved all the pictures and documents to my external hard drive just a week before the laptop died! So all the pictures of baby Kiko were safe, which was my biggest concern. It is the one downside of saving everything electronically. I rarely print out pictures, so if the computer or hard drive breaks, they are all gone.

Since I spend many hours on the computer everyday for work, I immediately went to store to get a new laptop. Since I’m cheap, I bought Acer laptop which was only about 400 bucks. After using the new laptop for just a few hours, I quickly realized that it was not a very well-built computer. The touch pad wasn’t functioning like it should at all, and it did not even come with Window’s OS. I didn’t realize that when I bought it. After a few days with the Acer, I had to return it. I paid a little more to get a new Toshiba Dynabook. It is so much better! I love it. The battery lasts long (4 hours) and it is much lighter than my old laptop. One negative thing is that I no longer have Photoshop. I want to buy it but it is so expensive.. Instead, I downloaded GIMP. Does anyone use this program? I’m still learning how to use it. It is similar to Photoshop though.

Also, I ordered my new sewing machine! After hours of reading online reviews, I finally decided on Juki DDL-9000SS (link to the PDF catalog. I was debating between 9000 and 5570 until the very end, but I went for 9000, one of the newest models from Juki. There was a big price difference, but my pc incident made me reconsider buying things just because they are a little cheaper. DDL-9000 has a servo motor, which is supposed to be much quieter than the old clutch motor. It also has an automatic thread cutter, three interchangeable sewing feet (instead of changing it with screw everytime) and crazy speed! It sews 5,000 stitches per minute!

I am supposed to receive it next weekend, and I can’t wait to try my hands on this new machine. It sucked to have my home sewing machine broken, but the bright side is that I got to try the new, industrial one, which I would never had if it were up to me since I’m cheap.

UPDATE: Thanks to Sarah, I was able to download Photoshop and Illustrator CS2 for free from Adobe website! Here is the link. Thank you so much Sarah!

Sketch Everyday

January 14, 2013 By Chie

fashion sketch1 by vivat veritas

What is your New Year’s resolution for 2013? Mine is to practice sketching everyday. I wanted to make a goal that I can work toward everyday. After working on the dancers’ costumes last year, I saw my desperate need for better sketching. When talking with the dancer it became increasing difficult  to finalize the design, mostly because the lack of my drawing/sketching skills. I took art in high school and I liked it very much but once I went into the “real world” with jobs and what not I just didn’t have time to sit down and practice drawing.

As a starter, I decided to imitate the fashion drawing from the book, Dress Patterns by Adele P. Margolis. It was a gift from Andy’s grandmother last Christmas. It is an awesome book by the way, if you want to learn about pattern drafting and manipulation. The book includes a lot of illustrations, and I was attracted by the vintage feel of the drawings. So I’m spending 5-10 minutes everyday replicating drawings  from the book. Hopefully over time, I will be able to draw on my own.

So here are my sketches from last week…

fashion sketch by vivatveritas2fashion sketch3 by vivat veritasfashion sketch4 by vivat veritas After a week of sketching, I definitely feel more comfortable than before. Sketching the fingers I found the most difficult. Also the face, with a tiny little bit of difference, a woman’s face can look really scary!!

Daddy’s Diary: Avoid the Trap

January 10, 2013 By Chie

daddy's diary
Good evening faithful readers. The king is here. Chie has moved from the throne for a moment and asked for a Daddy proclamation. I never know when, why or where her requests for my wisdom will come. I don’t know if its random or there is some reason to her madness. I feel that I spout numerous jewels everyday, so why today?

In any case, here is what I have been chewing on today. We need to avoid this trap with our children. This trap is one where we recognize that our children can understand and so begin to feel that we can bargain with them. I’ll set the scene. It’s 5 pm, dinner time. You have some luscious dinner spread for your child(ren). If its me, then I have laid out something involving eggs for Kiko’s  dinner(we have a lot of eggs here. For some reason I stock them by the crate. Most meals for Kiko include eggs, I wonder if that will cause baby cholesterol). So back to dinner, you’ve laid out dinner and you can see that he/she/it is hungry but won’t cooperate. You know in the recesses of your soul that this child is hungry but doesn’t want this(whatever egg product “this” is). You also know that if they don’t eat this, they will be fine for the moment but they will hit the wall, get hungry and ruin your night time routine or, God forbid, wake up in the middle of the night and will wreak havoc on the next day.

Your child is getting older so you can’t just shove it in like you used to (you could but, you feel mildly abusive for doing so). You try various ploys like cutting the food into smaller pieces, the airplane game (that has never worked on any child) or the sneak attack (that is where you make them laugh or open their mouth and shove the food in there real quick). All of this has failed. You know your child never turns down deserts which in our home is blueberries. You think to yourself, “I know, we are all reasonable folks here lets make a deal.” “Child, if you will eat x amount, I  will give you some blueberries.” At 20 months, Kiko knows enough to understand my dumb hand motions sectioning off food portions and the word blueberry. She’s not a genius, she knows only enough to ensure she gets what she wants, in this case blueberries. I have fallen into this trap a couple of times and every time I get the hoped for immediate response. But, the next feeding at the zoo comes and Kiko, not being dumb, inevitably tries the same thing. It’s not hurt fault I set up the new rules of establishment. I, by playing lets make a deal, have established a new area for her to exploit. She, being scheming and crafty, like all children, will work this to her benefit. It then takes me more time and to readdress the problem, unless I decide to cave, again. If I cave more than once, it becomes a system and a system soon becomes a rule.

The right mindset is, within limits, “screw you kid, this is dinner! When you can articulate your position on the food pyramid and how blueberries satisfy all levels of said pyramid then we can have a discussion, until then open up and put in the eggs!”

Avoid the trap of let’s make a deal. Appeasement did not work with the Nazis and it shan’t work with our little dictators.
The pictures are from Sagamihara Asamizo Park. They have a petting zoo and horse riding for kids.

The lining of a kimono — often discarded when the fabric is remade into something new.
That soft, lightweight silk felt too good to let go, so I turned it into a summer dress. It needed something more, so I asked artist Riko Monma to dye it for me — and suddenly it came alive again.

I made this piece a few years ago, but for the recent event with @designerhelena, I decided to bring it into the collection. Helen gave me so much guidance on color — combinations I never would have arrived at on my own. The whole preparation process was just really, really fun😌

Cafés do Brasil — the stamp from its days carrying beans stays right there on the back.

Kimono fabric has always been at the heart of what I do, but I want to bring in more materials with a history — things that have traveled, carried weight, meant something before they became a garment.

Someone sews, and a shape is born.
Someone paints, and light finds a face.
Someone adorns, and a story stirs beside the ear.

Before the doors opened, there was this. Garments Before the doors opened, there was this.

Garments waiting on the rack. Brushes in hand. Quiet conversations in corners. The unhurried moment before everything becomes a show.

""Released. Reimagined."" with @designerhelen was made possible by so many generous hands — our makeup and hair team, our models, every person who showed up early and stayed late. Thank you for caring for these pieces, and for each other, the way you did.

More to come🤍

Reimagined."" は、たくさんの方々の手によって生まれました。 メイク・ヘアチームのみなさん、モデルのみなさん、早くから駆けつけて最後まで残ってくれたすべての方へ。 本当にありがとうございました。
次回も頑張ります🤍

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Released. Reimagined.
