Behind the Scenes:: Fall 2013 Lookbook

October 30, 2013 By Chie

vivat veritas ss2013 fall lookbook behind the scenes4Over this summer, I worked on a few weddings (here and here), and everything else related to my shop update had been pushed back. Now that I am done with big projects, you can expect to see new items in the shop soon.

Last weekend, we went to Yume no Shima park  (夢の島公園)in Shin-Kiba (新木場) to shoot our fall 2013 lookbook. This fall had many typhoons in Japan, so I was worried that we would not be able to shoot on the day we set, but thankfully, it turned out to be a beautiful, fall sunny day.

I am really into the knee-length or midi-length pencil skirt look right now. You will see that in this lookbook..I can’t stop making simple pencil skirts in many different fabrics. This year’s trend is pushing me to try the styles that I would otherwise never try, like cropped top or turtle neck sweaters. I detested turtle necks before (it always made my neck itchy), but since I see them all over the place now, I started to like them. What is your favorite fall/winter trend this year? vivat veritas ss2013 fall lookbook behind the scenes3 vivat veritas ss2013 fall lookbook behind the scenes2 vivat veritas ss2013 fall lookbook behind the scenes1

VV Wedding:: Soft Tulle Dress and Tuxedo

October 28, 2013 By Chie

Photo1

It was great to see the customer in the wedding dress I made! I was invited the wedding party of my customer. As I wrote before (here and here) , Chie and I got the chance to produce the bride’s dress and the groom tuxedo.

Marie and Takashi Wedding by Vivat Veritas, Made by Rina Photo3

They looked so awesome in the garments. It is hard to explain how happy I was when I saw the couple together!

They already had an official wedding ceremony a few days ago in Kyoto. They set this party at a restaurant in Tokyo, since they currently live near Tokyo and have many friends there.

Japanese brides usually rent a dress for the wedding ceremony, which is expensive, 2000-4000US dollar on average. It isn’t uncommon that they have to pay additional charge to wear the dress outside of the place of wedding ceremony, because the rental dress makers are sometimes attached to ceremony places.

I don’t really like this kind of Japanese system. I think the wedding style should be more flexible to each bridal couple. So I’ll try to keep making dresses what customers want with fair price.

I hope I could have contributed toward having their happiness (:

Charity Craft Show in Yokohama

October 20, 2013 By Chie

craft show decoration copyThis weekend, I visited my friend, Taren of Oslo and Alfred at the Charity Craft Show in Yokohama. Taren is an American illustrator based in Tokyo, and she and I collaborated to make the feather print dress for my SS13 collection. It was held at a place called Imperial Gallery in Motomachi, Chukagai, which means Yokohama China town. Taren and other crafters hosted a show on October 19th and 20th, 2013 and part of their revenue will go toward the people in Northern Japan, where a lot of damage occurred during the earth quake. craft show jewelry

Pretty vintage-inspired jewelry. I picked one up for myself (the necklace on the far left).halloween decor jewlery at craft show nathanLive music (classical guitar)  outside of the gallery by Nathan, Taren’s husband!

The lining of a kimono — often discarded when the fabric is remade into something new.
That soft, lightweight silk felt too good to let go, so I turned it into a summer dress. It needed something more, so I asked artist Riko Monma to dye it for me — and suddenly it came alive again.

I made this piece a few years ago, but for the recent event with @designerhelena, I decided to bring it into the collection. Helen gave me so much guidance on color — combinations I never would have arrived at on my own. The whole preparation process was just really, really fun😌

Cafés do Brasil

Made from a coffee sack sourced from @allpress_espresso.

Cafés do Brasil — the stamp from its days carrying beans stays right there on the back.

Kimono fabric has always been at the heart of what I do, but I want to bring in more materials with a history — things that have traveled, carried weight, meant something before they became a garment.

A butterfly doesn’t transform alone.

Someone sews, and a shape is born.
Someone paints, and light finds a face.
Someone adorns, and a story stirs beside the ear.

Each gesture layered upon the next —
until one garment spreads its wings on the runway🦋

Before the doors opened, there was this. Garments Before the doors opened, there was this.

Garments waiting on the rack. Brushes in hand. Quiet conversations in corners. The unhurried moment before everything becomes a show.

""Released. Reimagined."" with @designerhelen was made possible by so many generous hands — our makeup and hair team, our models, every person who showed up early and stayed late. Thank you for caring for these pieces, and for each other, the way you did.

More to come🤍

Reimagined.""

Before a collection comes to life, there are floors buried under fabric, pattern pieces, and countless hours of trial and error.

A heartfelt thank you to the incredible models who breathed life into each look, and to every member of the team who made it all possible 💝

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Released. Reimagined.

It took quite a bit of wandering to find this venue. Tucked just off a quiet side street from Harajuku’s Takeshita Exit — full glass frontage, light pouring in. The moment I stepped inside, I knew🌱

Right at the entrance, @brownie_shots will be running a pop-up☕︎ The central space becomes our runway. VIP seating going in now.

Less than one week to go. Fingers crossed for sunshine ☀️
