Made:: Daisy Print Kimono

July 16, 2014 By Chie

daisy kimono5 copySummer is officially here! It is so hot out, all I want to wear is jean cut-offs and tank tops. Although it’s melting hot outside, when you go to the mall or restaurant, I find myself being freezing with strong AC air. I was looking for something breezy as a cover-up and when I saw this pretty butterfly kimono, I thought this is it! I made the pattern out of something I already have – this sheer beach cover-up. I updated it by shortening the length and changing up the collar.

The fabric is from Nippori. I happened to come across with this pretty daisy print on the sales rack and ended up taking it all home. The fabric content is polyester, and it drapes it very well.

It was very quick to make! I like that. I want my in-between projects to be quick and glorifying:) Is anyone interested in tutorial for this? Please comment down below if you are.

So now to outfit details – The loose tank is from forever 21 about years ago. I got it off the sales rack for very cheap, but since it is so versatile, I keep reaching for it in the closet. The shorts were actually high waisted jeans, but the fit was not great perhaps because it is 100% cotton. I bought them from Urban Outfitters on sale for 10 dollars. As I wore them, they became loose and looked like mom jeans, so I decided to make them into a cut-offs. I wore them and marked the line to cut with a pen. Then I cut them off, sewed the sides so that they wouldn’t fall apart. After that, I threw them in to the washing machine to let it do its job to make the hem look destroyed.

The necklace is from gorjana, and the wach is from Michael Kors.

Made:: White Tank Dress with Tulip Hem

May 13, 2014 By Chie

white tank dress with tulip hem vivat veritas blog

I initially made this dress for a photoshoot, and then was going to put it up on my etsy shop, but I ended up keeping it for myself because it is super comfortable to wear. I found myself reaching out for it at least once a week. When it was still cold out, I wore it with plaid flannel shirt, leather jacket, tights and booties. Now it is warm out, so I can wear it on its own or with something light weight sheer jacket I DIYed before. It is also one of those versatile pieces that you can dress up or dress down. Today I wore it with Nike sneakers and backpack which  I thrifted for 300 yen at a flea market at Tomioka Hachiman Shrine in Monzen Nakacho last month.

The small cut out details on the shoulder and curved hem make it a bit different from regular tank dress. I call it a “tulip hem” since it looks like a tulip, flipped upside down. The whole dress is lined with the same fabric so it is not sheer. The fabric I used is hard to describe – It is a ribbed jersey, and I think the fabric content is polyester. I grabbed it at sale’s section at Tomato in Nippori, so they did not have the exact fabric content available. I think the fabric worked out with the design very well. You don’t want to use too thin of a jersey fabric for this type of design, so that you can see the underwear line from a mile away. By the way, I recently bought this Calvin Klein underwear, and I love it! It is a hipster, and it really does not show the line even if you wear skinny pants.white tank dress with tulip hem vivat veritas blog2 white tank dress8white tank dress with tulip hem vivat veritas blog3

DIY:: T-shirt to a Dress Tutorial

May 2, 2014 By Chie

t-shirt to dress DIY Vivat Veritas BlogSorry for posting kids related topics in a row. I haven’t been sewing much for adults except for wedding dresses, and the things I’ve made for myself, I haven’t had taken pictures. I promise more grown-up projects will be posted soon!

I got this idea of turning a T-shirt that is too small for a child into a dress on Pinterest. I thought I pinned it on my DIY ideas board, but now I can’t seem to find it! Anyway, this DIY is super easy. It helps both parents and a child, if your child is like mine, who LOVES wearing dresses and insists on wearing one every day. Killing two birds with one stone! t-shirt to dress DIY - What You Need - Vivat Veritas Blog

The idea is to take a small T-shirt (or it does not have to be small, but you can recycle the small one to make it last longer!) and attach a rectangle shaped, gather skirt. The fabric for the skirt part can be anything. The one I saw on Pinterest uses cotton fabric. It seemed like it was a quilting cotton. I used jersey, which I intended to use for my Spring jacket/cardigan but never got around making it. I think tulle or lace might work well as well.

I cut the jersey in one big rectangle shape. The width of the fabric is about 2 times longer than the t-shirt hem length all around.t-shirt to dress DIY - Step by Step - Vivat Veritas BlogOnce you cut the fabric, sew the side seams together to create a tube shape. After that, hem the skirt hem, and attach the elastic band all around the top hem. Attach the elastic part into the T-shirt to make it into a dress! It took about 15 minutes to do this. t-shirt to dress2 DIY Vivat Veritas Blog t-shirt to dress3 DIY Vivat Veritas Blog

I’m glad this cute cupcake t-shirt will last another 6 months!
