MADE | Oversized Button Down

February 26, 2018 By Chie

striped oversized button up handmade My first Spring make of 2018! The white Archer button up was in my 10 x 10 challenge. I mentioned in this post how I love this shirt to wear underneath sweaters, but feel a bit outdated to wear it on its own. I see in Pinterest and Instagram that button downs are worn oversized, with the collar slightly pulled to the back creating a V neckline shape in the front. The Archer button up is great sewn default, but gives the impression of a well ordered good school when worn on its own. So I made my own version of oversized button up. I’m planning to wear it with a turtleneck sweater and skinny jeans in colder weather, and on its own with khaki shorts (another one I made recently, not blogged yet) when the weather warms up. striped oversized button up handmade striped oversized button up handmadeI bought this fabric a while ago to make the Off-Shoulder Blouse by FASHION MAKERY. I saw the blouse on Instagram and fell in love with it. Unfortunately I could not figure out how to print it properly; I printed out the first page of the pattern, and the test square that says 5cm x 5cm prints out as 3.2cm x 3.2cm. I did not scale the patterns and printed out on A4 paper as is, but it seemed like the patterns shrunk and I could not fix it. That was about six months ago…eventually I gave up. Has anyone have a similar problem with FASHION MAKERY PDF patterns?striped oversized button up handmade

Pattern Info

  • Pattern: Graineline Studio Archer Button Up Shirt, size 4
  • Fabric: Cotton blend stripe fabric bought in Nippori Tomato
  • Modifications: Added 10 cm on side as shown in above picture for left and right front pieces, back yokes and back. Lengthened the shirt by 20cm. Shortened the sleeve length to 36cm.

MADE | Matching Stripes Bodysuit & Top

April 25, 2016 By Chie

made matching stripes bodysuit and topSpring has finally come! I am so happy not to be bundled up with scarves, hats and all kinds of layers. My first Spring made item is this stripe bodysuit. I have been wanting to make a bodysuit for myself ever since Closet Case Files released the Nettie pattern. But instead of buying the pattern, I self-drafted it. I thought why bother to buy a pattern, print it out and put together the 20+ pages if it is just a top and underwear connected together. I was wrong. I quickly found out that a bodysuit pattern is much harder to draft than I expected. The top long-T part was ok; I wish I made the shoulder wider and armhole a bit bigger, but nothing terrible. The underwear part was the problem. If you make it too loose, it will not look right and will lose the bodysuit fit. I think the main attraction of a bodysuit is that you have a clean waistline. It looks less fussy than tucking in a shirt since bodysuit holds it down with snaps at the crotch.stripes body suit and levis 501 jeans2Top: Fabric is from Tomato knit section, Jeans: Levis 501
self drafted stripes body suitInitially, I made the bodysuit with full butt coverage like the above picture. When I tried it on, the panty line showed when I wore fitted skinny jeans, so I had to modify the bottom part to make it like a thong. I don’t really like wearing a thong so I want to know if there is any solution for a full butt coverage bodysuit that won’t show a line? Or should I just accept the fact that the line will show when worn with tight bottom and pair it with loose fitted skirt?

I have a mixed feeling about this bodysuit. Although I love the stripes (literally matches with pretty much everything in my closet!) and how French it looks, every time I go to the bathroom and have to remove the crotch snaps, I feel a bit dumb. Kiko commented, “mommy you look like a baby!” refereeing to a baby romper. Next time I make a bodysuit, I will certainly be using someone else’s patterns, like Nettie or Kommatia.
stripes body suit and levis 501 jeans1stripes top for a girl via vivat veritas blogThere is not much I need to mention about Kiko’s top. I made it with leftover fabric. The pattern is from a Japanese book, titled “Yuki Araki’s Girl’s Clothes (セレクト版 荒木由紀の女の子のお洋服), same as this panda dress. I had to shorten the sleeves and hem because of the lack of fabric.

Crossover Back Chambray Shirt

October 30, 2015 By Chie

DIY crossover back chambray shirtI bought two meters of chambray fabric at Nippori Tomato during the Summer, thinking of making a dress shirt for Andy. After my failed attempt (talked about here), I lost the motivation to make anything for him. On top of that, he was just given around 30 new(used of course) pieces from his friend. Even his male friend could not stand seeing him wear the same old t-shirts and sweatpants. So I thought it would be good timing to just take the fabric and make something for myself.

Again, I based this shirt on Grainline Studio’s Archer button up. This is my sixth time using this pattern (my other versions 1, 2, 3, 4. The pattern fits me well and making button up is a perfect in-between project. It is intricate enough to be interesting to sew but not time consuming enough to be too daunting to start, like coat.

To change things up a bit, I modified it to make cross over back. The inspiration comes from my Fall Sewing List, particularly Antonio Berardi poplin shirt. It retails $735!
Grainline Studio Archer Button Up Chambray Version Handmade chambray button down with a cross over backThe adjustment is easy, as described below. Instead of making the center front folded, the back panel separated in two. I added 5cm in center back, and using curved ruler, cut slightly curved line toward the hem. I also lengthen the hem by about 7cm. I folded the hem twice the center back, crossed over and attached to back yoke. DSC_1918 copyCross over back modificationAnother modification I made was the pockets. I experimented with the pocket flaps in the past in my silk version. On top of the added flaps, I made the pocket bellows pocket. I love to add little details like this to a simple button up. Also enjoyed learning new skills.

Finally, I did all the button holes by hand. I did one in the past, but working on 8 button holes by hand took longer than I planned!

Next up in my sewing cue is khaki parka using BurdaStyle pattern! Some sneak peak on my instagram.

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Released. Reimagined.

It took quite a bit of wandering to find this venue. Tucked just off a quiet side street from Harajuku’s Takeshita Exit — full glass frontage, light pouring in. The moment I stepped inside, I knew🌱

Right at the entrance, @brownie_shots will be running a pop-up☕︎ The central space becomes our runway. VIP seating going in now.

Less than one week to go. Fingers crossed for sunshine ☀️

It’s May — and yet, fall hues🍂

Warm enough to break a sweat by noon,
then a cool breeze sneaks in by evening🌬️

I kind of love that about this time of year♡

Rich amber and terracotta.
Something about spring light makes these autumn tones look even more beautiful✨

For those cool mornings and evenings,
a silk haori is just right.
