Three Baby Shower Gift Ideas

October 31, 2014 By Chie

three baby shower gift ideas

There is a baby boom happening around me lately. It seems like everyone is having a baby! As much as the time allows , I try to make some handmade gifts for them. It is more time consuming, but there is also something special about staying late at night, using my hands to create for your friends. For baby shower gifts, I try to avoid baby clothes because when you get a ton of new born clothes which won’t last for a long time because baby grows so quick. It might not be as fun but I like to give practical gifts like diapers and nursing pads because you will definitely need them. Here are some of my ideas to pretify the rather boring gifts:

1. Diaper cakeantonia29

This one is fun to make and you can be creative with the toppings. My friend made me one when I was having baby and I appreciated having extra diapers around when I forgot to buy some.diper cake how to1 diper cake how to2 diper cake how to3

I used one pack of diapers (about 80 diapers). I separated them in three, rolled them up (put in a toilet paper core in the middle for the biggest roll), and tie with an elastic band. To connect three diaper cake rolls together, I used disposable chopsticks, just stick a few of them in the middle.diper cake how to4 diper cake how to5Since my friend was having a baby boy, I used some fabric left overs in sky blue (from this dress) and trims. To secure the end, I stapled them together. Perhaps you can use hot glue gun to do the same. I added a cardboard cut in the same size circle of the bottom diaper roll, covered in the same blue fabric for the very bottom for extra security.antonia31 mini cars

Now the fun part: toppings! I found these tiny paper cars and trains at Okashi Tengoku (お菓子天国). It literally means Snack Heaven. They have all kinds of Japanese snacks. The one I went was in the second floor of Toyosu Viva Home. To attach the toppings, I used tooth picks. It wasn’t the most secure way to put them on, but they stood ok.

2. Embroidered card

baby shower card3While I was in Philadelphia, I took some embroidery project with me. I worked on it while I sat on the couch and chatted with grandma. One of my favorite stitches I learned is the chain stitch. I looks pretty when you use a thick thread, like 6 thread embroidery strand. There are many tutorials on how to do chain stitch on the internet so I won’t go into the detail here. This tutorial is easy to follow.

To make the card, I stole a colored paper from Kiko’s craft drawer and drew the letter, “BOY”. Then using 6 embroidery together, chain stitch along the letter drawn with a pencil. baby shower card1 baby shower card2 baby shower card4baby shower gift

Guess what’s inside the tulle wrapping? It is nursing pads! Well, they were specifically requested by the mom-to-be. You need a lot of those for the first few months. I made myself some washable nursing pads, but by the end of breast feeding, I was tired of washing them after each use. Disposable ones would have come very handy.

3. Initial embroidered cloth washable wipesbaby cloth initial embroidery

The idea is the same as the gift idea #2. I bought a plain white cloth wipes and embroider the baby’s last name initial using chain stitch. baby cloth initial embroidery1 baby cloth initial embroidery2

Hope you like my ideas!

Daddy’s Diary 9: Letting Them Struggle

August 17, 2012 By Andy

They say (I don’t know who exactly, but let’ss assume for the sake if this post that “they” do) that baby chicks need the struggle of breaking through the egg to be able to survive. I don’t know if the baby chick struggle cliche is true but it makes for an appropriate opening in to daddy’s recent thoughts.

Kiko, the young one of the house, has been maturing…a lot. She walks, runs, babbles incoherent nonsense in an attempt to communicate, all kinds of new and exciting aspects of her growth have been bubbling up to the surface. As a proud dad I must say she is doing quite well. She is growing in body, mind and spirit. She is mature beyond her 16 months. But, at the same time, as I watch her grow and accomplish new things I am forced to spend an equal amount of my time watching and allowing her to go into places and situations that I know will cause her pain. Why? It is the only way she can learn.

We all know this don’t we? As people we know that the only way to learn is to work through the process of failure so that we can figure out what to do and what not to do. Certainly not everything requires failure and in a perfect world failure would enter into the equation but as it stands now, a lot of learning comes on building off of past failures, making little steps of progress forward to our goal. That knowledge is fine….for us. We ourselves know that if you fall of the horse you just get back on and keep riding. But, to have watch your kids do it, sucks!

I’ll give you recent scenario:
Andy: Kiko, hold daddies hand here or you’ll fall over.
Kiko: Nya Nya Nya Ba Ba pffffffft = “No, I don’t need to”
Andy: Please sweetie hold daddies hand.
Kiko: Screw that! I’m going to run…….I fell over and smashed my face on the cement……WAHHHHH!!!!

It’s terrible to watch your kids put themselves in physical danger and we all know that scenario as parents. The more frightening ones happen on stairs or on busy roads or other such places of danger. As parents, disciples teachers and Instructors we have to allow for our children to learn (within reason at this age) how actions have consequences. The more you put them in situations like this the quicker they start to learn. When you are lucky they heed your instructions before putting themselves in harms way.

I’ve had nightmares about Kiko on the stairs or Kiko diving skull first off the couch while I’m not paying attention. I, probably for the rest of life, worry about Kiko’s capacity to calculate risk and and choose actions accordingly. But as a father, an extremely limited father, I have to make a conscious effort to allow my child to go through the physical and emotional struggles that come with this life so that she may be better prepared and better Abe to handle the life she is given and the world she encounters.

Soon, the emotional dangers and the dangers posed by other people will become a necessary topic of Daddy-Daughter training time, but for now I’ll just try and keep her from knocking herself unconscious jumping off the loft in my bedroom.

Mommy’s Diary: New Schedule for the One Year Old

July 26, 2012 By Chie

Now that Kiko is 15 months, we needed to adjust her daily schedule a bit. I wrote about her schedule when she was 3 months here and 8 months here. Unfortunately, no more two naps a day! She used to take both morning and afternoon naps. Sadly, those days are over…we switched to one post lunch nap. Very sad! Anyway, here is her new daily schedule…

7:00am I wake her up or she gets up around this time on her own. Andy and I are get up at 5am, and have a cup or two coffee in us by this time. It helps us to be ready for Ms. Kiko. I feel like I get a lot of things done when I start my day early. On rare occasions when I get to sleep in till 8am, I feel like half of my day has been wasted! But, to the point at hand, I go in to her room and get her ready by changing her diaper and dressing her with new clothes for the day.

7:30am Breakfast time. After that, she helps Andy cleans up the table, and hangs out with us in our living room.

9:00-10:00am Usually Andy takes her out during this time, whether it is a walk to post office to mail sold items of my shop, going to a community center on hot days or rainy days, or a nearby park.

10:00-11:00am This is her morning “alone time”, where she plays by herself in her room upstairs. One of us is in the next room, with the door open, and a baby gate separating us so we can see each other. She likes to play with Duplo’s. Sometimes she gets whiny but we are trying to teach her to relax and play by herself.

11:00am Lunch!

12:00-2:00pm Nap time! By this time, Kiko is really tired and takes a nap without fussing. We take her to her crib. She is getting too big for a crib, but I’m not sure when to switch her to a regular bed. I still think without being caged in she will get up and wonder around when she is supposed to be sleeping. Any thoughts?

2:oo-4:30pm We get Kiko up from nap, and she has a drink and snack. After that, we do some activity depending on the day. Some days Andy takes her out for walk, or I take her out to run errands. Sometimes she plays in her the baby pool.

4:30pm Andy usually gives her dinner.

5:00-5:45pm TV Time – we don’t own a TV, but Kiko watches some DVD on the computer. She likes Elmo’s world.. Some people are surprised that we don’t have a TV. We used to, but we never watched it and it was taking too much space, so we got rid of it. I really don’t miss having a TV. We watch shows on the computer some nights – my current favorites are Desperate Housewives Season 8 and Life Unexpected.

6:00pm Bath time. Giving Kiko a bath or shower is usually my job, unless I’m out for some reason. She plays with fishing toys while I wash myself.

6:30pm Bedtime routine – it includes having a family devotional time, brushing her teeth, lots of kisses and hugs, and reading books. Between 6:30-7:00pm she goes to bed and sleeps through the night!

So this is our typical day when Andy is around. On weekends, we modify the schedule a bit. Andy has a big part in Kiko’s life. He is a great husband and a father! He cooks and does a lot of chores 🙂 We have 2 hours in the morning (5-7am) and 3 hours at night (7-10pm) of adult time to keep ourselves sane and get things done.

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Released. Reimagined. ふたりのデザイナー。ふたつの都市。ひとつの共通した信念——美しいものには、もう一度輝く機会がある✨

It took quite a bit of wandering to find this venue. Tucked just off a quiet side street from Harajuku’s Takeshita Exit — full glass frontage, light pouring in. The moment I stepped inside, I knew🌱

Right at the entrance, @brownie_shots will be running a pop-up☕︎ The central space becomes our runway. VIP seating going in now.
