Two-way Wedding Dress

Style2 Skirt9

Hello! Here are some pictures of the wedding dress that I completed recently. Hours and hours of work went in to it, and I can’t believe it’s finally done. This dress took a lot of thinking, revising, testing and more revising because this dress is a two-way dress. There are three pieces to the dress: strapless A-line dress base, Obi sash with the big back detailing as style one dress and teared organza over skirt as style two dress. The bride could not decide which way she wanted to go with it; classy, or girly or fluffy, so I offered to make a two-way dress so she could have both. There was a challenge of figuring out how to attach the obi sash without it looking like it was put-on later, due to the heaviness of the back detailing. I ended up using the plastic board which is usually used for hat brims for the waist band to support the weight. vivat veritas wedding dress sketchesHere are the initial sketches. The left one is the style one and the right one is the style two over skirt. Style1 Skirt3

In order to add the volume to the obi, a soft wire (also usually used for hat brim) was inserted at hem. It holds up the weight of the medium weight satin fabric. Style1 Skirt5

Gem sash is another addition you can put it on and off from the dress. I made a small button hole in the style one obi sash, so the gem sash end can be hidden under the back details. Style2 Skirt1

I love the bust pleating details of the dress. It is such an classy design. I first cut out the sweet heart shaped top bodice, then I draped the pleating design on the dress form, using the same satin fabric cut on bias. Then I based the pleats, pressed, and took it to the sewing machine to make it the permanent pleats. Style2 Skirt6

These are style two over skirt above. This required a bit of testing and modifying. At first, I used chiffon Georgette, but it did not provide the structure that the bride was looking for. So I inserted fishing thread at hem as I surge the hem, but it made the circular motion shape, and did not turn out the way I was hoping for. Then I realized that I needed to rethink about my fabric choice. I found this off-white organza, and it worked perfectly. It gave the volume that I wanted. Style2 Skirt7When you look inside of the style two over skirt, you see the hooks in the front and some satin ribbons on the sides and back to tie to the main dress. I wanted to be sure that this skirt does not slip down during the wedding.vv two way wedding dress

My dress form is a bit bigger than the bride, so I could not put the dress on it to take pictures. The pictures above are obi sash for the style one dress and the pictures below them are style two organza dress, combined with the base dress.

It was a lot of work but the result was so satisfying!

A few recent snapshots from my sewing room. Many hours spent sewing white satins and chiffon Georgette these days. Although I am grateful for the work, I kind of miss having the time to sew for myself. After seeing Sonja‘s Nettie bodysuits, I am obsessed with the thought of the same. I want to wear it like Karla rocks it.catch stitch seam allowanceCatch stitching the seam allowances to the muslin underlining.

Draping the bust pleats. I cut the satin fabric in bias, and hand draped the pleats. Once I decide on the pleat lines, I pinned it to the dress form and basted it. Then take it off the dress form, pressed to mark the creases and then took it to my sewing machine to sew the pleat lines.hand draping the bust pleats wedding dress hemming the wedding dress with horsehair braid

Here is the picture of attaching the horse hair braids at dress hem. I really like the clean finish that the horse hair provides. I’ve read that you can use hard tulle fabric to attain the same effect, but have not tried yet. It certainly save the money since horse hair braids are not cheap, considering you use meters of it. Has anyone try the method? hemming the wedding dress with horsehair braid2 sewing the drape folds sewing wedding dress skirtMy messy sewing room…

tiffany blue bridesmaid dress by vivat veritas1 copy

Hello! Just wanted to share some of the sewing projects I have been working on recently. The above is the Midriff cutout dress in Tiffany blue as a bridesmaid dress. It’s available in more than 40 different colors! (Check out the last photo of the listing). The Kimono wrap shown below is one of my best sellers since 2012. It’s perfect as a beach cover-up; also available in six different colors. sheer kimono wrap by viavt veritas1 tiffany blue dress and kimono wrap by vivat veritas white lace dress in process by vivat veritas1

This one is a custom wedding party dress. In Japan, sometimes a couple throws a separate party after the wedding ceremony, just with friends. This will be a little bohemian inspired dress. white lace dress in process by vivat veritas2 white lace dress in process by vivat veritas3Lastly, here is a short video of the behind the scenes of the photoshoot I posted on facebook page recently. I worked with Elissa, who modeled here, here and here. We shot at the cutest studio in Shibuya. They location is full of beautiful and delicate antiques like a chandelier, alarm clock, phone, match boxes and tea cups. You can buy the items displayed in the studio too! The background music I put in the video is “Young and Beautiful” by Lana Del Ray.
